High speed development of new chemical synthesis and materials at molecular-level: Methods and approaches
Recent success of advanced computational chemistry, in example for the prediction of chemical reactivity and materials properties, reflects its reputation as a valuable and widely accepted means to tackle problems in academia. The development of new simulation methods and new computer architectures enables an enormous improvement of the productivity of research and development of new chemical synthesisand materials. These advances can be achieved in terms of less time, material, and staff compared to traditional lab experiments. Especially, approaches like virtual high throughput screenings (vHTS) are highly scalable and allow fast and deep insights into new promising system modifications. Consequently, the time to market and risk of new product development can be decreased significantly. These characteristicspaved the way for the successful application in industry nowadays
Zastosowanie metod conzenowskich w polskich badaniach morfologii miast
Morfologia historyczna miast jest jednym z najstarszych kierunków
badawczych w geografii historycznej, sięgającym swymi początkami
końca XIX w. Pojawiły się wówczas pierwsze interesujące próby
systematycznego ujęcia różnego typu opisów dotyczących głównie
budowy zewnętrznej miast, przeprowadzone przez badaczy związanych
z niemiecką szkołą geograficzną. W Polsce badania geograficzno-historyczne nad miastami mają
równie długą tradycję i zapoczątkowane zostały na przełomie XIX
i XX w. przez historyków: Franciszka Bujaka, Jana Bystronia i Karola
Potkańskiego. Dotyczyły one głównie rozwoju osadnictwa i struktur
przestrzennych osiedli. Podstawy metodologiczne współczesnej morfologii miast w Polsce
opracowane zostały przez Kazimierza Dziewońskiego, a przedstawione
w pracy Zagadnienie typologii morfologicznej miast w Polsce, w której
uporządkował on pojęcia, wyznaczył zadania badawcze polskiej
morfologii miast oraz określił zakres tych badań. Zaproponowane przez Dziewońskiego podstawy metodyczne zostały
wsparte prawie równoległymi w czasie pracami jednego z najwybitniejszych
geografów historycznych i morfologów miast drugiej
połowy XX w., znanym z nowatorskich opracowań morfologicznych,
brytyjskiego uczonego niemieckiego pochodzenia Michaela R.G.
Conzena. Jego najważniejszym dorobkiem teoretyczno-metodologicznym jest
koncepcja cyklu przemian morfologicznych działki miejskiej (oraz
bloku urbanistycznego), wypracowana na przykładzie historycznych
miast angielskich. To właśnie jemu
zawdzięczamy ścisłe, naukowe opracowanie metody analizy planu
miasta w ujęciu historycznym. Najważniejszymi i podstawowymi
elementami tego planu są – według niego – działki, ulice i drogi oraz
zabudowa. Szczególnie ważne dla rozwoju kierunku morfologicznego były poglądy
Conzena na temat wzajemnego stosunku badań morfologicznych
i funkcjonalnych. Uważał on bowiem, iż obydwa te aspekty
struktury funkcjonalnej
Cytokine Receptors-Regulators of Antimycobacterial Immune Response
Cytokine receptors are critical regulators of the antimycobacterial immune response, playing a key role in initiating and coordinating the recruitment and activation of immune cells during infection. They recognize and bind specific cytokines and are involved in inducing intracellular signal transduction pathways that regulate a diverse range of biological functions, including proliferation, differentiation, metabolism and cell growth. Due to mutations in cytokine receptor genes, defective signaling may contribute to increased susceptibility to mycobacteria, allowing the pathogens to avoid killing and immune surveillance. This paper provides an overview of cytokine receptors important for the innate and adaptive immune responses against mycobacteria and discusses the implications of receptor gene defects for the course of mycobacterial infection.

Natural history of intracranial aneurysms in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a relatively frequent genetic disorder that is associated with increased prevalence of intracranial aneurysms (IAs). However, evidence on the natural history of IAs in ADPKD is suboptimal. That leads to difficulties in development of recommendations on surveillance on patients with IAs in their medical history, or the need for repeat imaging for IAs in those with a negative result of the initial screening. The aim of the article is to present our experience on the natural history of IAs in ADPKD patients.
Material and methods
Thirty-four ADPKD patients, managed at our outpatient department, with imaging for intracranial aneurysms performed at least twice, were included into present retrospective analysis.
Results
Among 8 patients with an IA in their medical history, no new IA was observed during 93 patient-years of follow-up. In 6 patients with untreated, unruptured IAs, IA growth was observed in 2 cases during 32 patient-years of follow-up. Finally, among 20 patients with a negative result of initial screening, 2 new IAs were noticed during 115 patient-years of follow-up, including 1 patient with a positive family history for an IA, and 1 patient without a family history.
Conclusions
Our observations support repeat imaging for IAs in patients with ADPKD, positive family history of IA, and negative result of initial screening. Additionally, efforts should be made to develop clinical and/or laboratory risk factors for IAs development in ADPKD patients without family history of IA, which enable to identify patients who should undergo repeat imaging for IAs
3D MHD simulations of magnetic field evolution and radio polarization of barred galaxies
Aims. We study numerically the large-scale gas and magnetic field
evolution of barred galaxies in the gravitational potential of a disk, bulge, halo, and
bar. We solve non-linear MHD equations including the back-reaction of the magnetic field
to the gas. We do not take into account any dynamo process.
Methods. We apply the numerical MHD code to calculate the model of the
galaxy in three dimensions. We construct realistic maps of high-frequency (Faraday
rotation free) polarized radio emission on the basis of the simulated magnetic fields. The
polarization model includes the effects of projection and limited resolution.
Results. The main result is that our modeled polarization maps resemble
the radio polarization structures observed in barred galaxies. The modeled polarization
B-vectors distribution along the bar and between spiral
arms resembles the observed topology of the magnetic field in barred galaxies. Our
calculations for several different rotational velocities and sound speeds give the same
result we got in our previous earlier published model. The reason of this behaviour is the
dynamical evolution of the bar that causes gas to form spiral waves going radially
outward. A gaseous spiral arms in turn generates magnetic ones, which live much longer in
the inter-arm disk space than the gaseous pattern
Re-hybrid thoracic stent graft implantation with total aortic arch debranching in urgent procedure: case report
INTRODUCTION: Implementation of emergency endovascular aortic repair provides an opportunity to treat complicated acute aortic syndromes involving descending aorta. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man with a history of aortic coarctation surgical repair as a child and an anastomosis aneurysm repair with a double endovascular stent graft implantation with hemi-arch transposition was urgently admitted with intensifying shortness of breath and hoarseness. A computed tomography study confirmed a blood leak into an aneurysm sac in proximal landing zones of implanted stent grafts (Type I endoleak). Therefore, he qualified for hybrid surgery. First, the ascending aorta brachiocephalic trunk was anastomosed with a 12 mm vascular prosthesis from an upper mini-sternotomy. In the next step, normothermic extracorporeal circulation was necessary to prevent cerebral circulation. Finally, a GORE stent graft (Gore Medical, Flagstaff, AZ, USA) was implanted with a proximal landing zone directly behind the anastomosis site of the vascular prosthesis and ascending aorta. The hospital course was uncomplicated, and the patient was discharged home 5 days after the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Complicated aortic pathologies requiring emergent interventions can be treated by a hybrid approach utilizing multistep surgical and endovascular techniques achieving optimal results
Interlayer Microstructure Analysis of the Transition Zone in the Silicon/Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell
The aim of the paper was to determine the morphology of the layers and the microstructure
of the transition zone present in the proposed tandem solar structure. The bottom-silicon solar
cell plays a double role: first as a highly porous non-reflecting material, and second as a scaffold
for top-perovskite cell. In the presented solution, the use of a porous layer made of (e.g., TiO2) is
excluded in favor of chemically etched wires on the silicon surface. The porous layer of silicon
consists of nano- and microwires etched with metal assisted etching (MAE). The perovskite layer is
introduced by a two-step chemical method into the spaces between the wires to fully fill them and
intentionally form an additional capping layer at the same time. To examine the structure made in
this way, advanced microscopic methods were used including scanning electron microscopy (SEM),
transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM),
also in high resolution
Endovascular treatment of traumatic injuries of thoracic aorta
Background. The aim of this paper is the evaluation of endovascular treatment of traumatic injuries of the
thoracic aorta.
Material and methods. In the years 2003-2005, 13 patients were treated for traumatic injuries of the
descending aorta related to traffic accidents. The types of traumatic lesions of the aorta were determined
according to contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). This imaging also allowed the determination of
the parameters necessary for stentgraft implantation, as well as possible injuries of other internal organs. In
12 patients, the procedure was performed through common femoral artery access; in one case, the stentgraft
was introduced through a Dacron prosthesis sutured to the abdominal aorta. In nine cases, the stentgraft
was implanted just below the origin of the left subclavian artery, and in four cases, below the origin of the
left common carotid artery occluding the origin of the subclavian artery.
Results. In six patients, post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the thoracic aorta was diagnosed, aortic rupture
with blood extravasation into mediastinum and pleural cavities in four others; whereas, in the three subsequent
patients, type B aortic dissection was diagnosed. In all cases a good short-term treatment outcome
was achieved along with the patient’s stable condition.
Conclusions. Endovascular treatment involving stentgraft implantation is a safe and rapid method of treatment
for traumatic injuries of the descending aorta. In the case of injury to the higher portion of the aorta,
occlusion of the origin of the left subclavian artery is possible without secondary symptoms of ischaemia of
CNS and/or left upper limb.Wstęp. Celem pracy była ocena wewnątrznaczyniowego leczenia pourazowych obrażeń aorty zstępującej.
Materiał i metody. Od 2003 do 2005 roku leczono 13 chorych z powodu obrażeń aorty piersiowej, spowodowanych
wypadkami komunikacyjnymi. Rodzaj zmian urazowych aorty ustalono na podstawie tomografii
komputerowej (CT) ze wzmocnieniem kontrastowym. Badanie to pozwoliło jednocześnie określić parametry
niezbędne do założenia stentgraftu, a także ocenić obrażenia innych narządów wewnętrznych. U 12 chorych
zabiegi wykonywano z dostępu przez tętnicę udową. W jednym przypadku stentgraft wprowadzono
drogą doszytej do aorty brzusznej protezy dakronowej. Dziewięciokrotnie stentgraft wszczepiano tuż poniżej
odejścia lewej tętnicy podobojczykowej. W 4 przypadkach umieszczono go poniżej tętnicy szyjnej wspólnej
lewej, przykrywając tętnicę podobojczykową.
Wyniki. U 6 chorych rozpoznano pourazowy tętniak rzekomy aorty piersiowej, u 4 kolejnych pacjentów
- pęknięcie aorty z wynaczynieniem krwi do śródpiersia i jam opłucnowych, natomiast u 3 innych badanych
- rozwarstwienie aorty typu B. We wszystkich przypadkach uzyskano doraźnie dobry wynik leczenia, osiągając
stabilny stan pacjentów.
Wnioski. Leczenie wewnątrznaczyniowe z założeniem stentgraftu jest bezpiecznym i szybkim zaopatrzeniem
pourazowego uszkodzenia aorty piersiowej. W przypadku wysokiego uszkodzenia aorty w celu uzyskania
szczelności stentgraftu możliwe jest przykrycie lewej tętnicy podobojczykowej bez następowych objawów
niedokrwienia osrodkowego układu nerwowego (OUN) i/lub kończyny górnej lewej
