A proposal for relative time petri nets
Copyright © 2005, IEEEPetri nets are a graph-based modelling formalism which has been widely used for the formal specification and analysis of concurrent systems. A common analysis technique is that of state space exploration (or reachability analysis). Here, every possible reachable state of the system is generated and desirable properties are evaluated for each state. This approach has the great advantage of conceptual simplicity, but the great disadvantage of being susceptible to state space explosion, where the number of states is simply too large for exhaustive exploration. Many reduction techniques have been suggested to ameliorate the problem of state space explosion. In the case of timed systems, the state space is infinite, unless analysis is restricted to a bounded time period. In this paper, we present a Petri net formalism based on the notion of relative time (as opposed to the traditional approach of dealing with absolute time). The goal is to derive a finite state space for timed systems which have repeating patterns of behaviour, even though time continues to advance indefinitely.Joseph Kuehn, Charles Lakos, Robert Esse
Properties of oscillation modes in subgiant stars observed by Kepler
Mixed modes seen in evolved stars carry information on their deeper layers
that can place stringent constraints on their physics and on their global
properties (mass, age, etc...). In this study, we present a method to identify
and measure all oscillatory mode characteristics (frequency, height, width).
Analyzing four subgiants stars, we present the first measure of the effect of
the degree of mixture on the l=1 mixed modes characteristics. We also show that
some stars have measurable l=2 mixed modes and discuss the interest of their
measure to constrain the deeper layers of stars.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Fate of recombinant DNA and Cry1Ab protein after ingestion and dispersal of genetically modified maize in comparison to rapeseed by fallow deer ( Dama dama )
The fate of recombinant DNA in fallow deer (Dama dama) was investigated by feeding a diet of isogenic or genetically modified (GM) maize expressing Cry1Ab protein against the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). To study the degradability of ingested DNA, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were introduced to detect fragments of the endogenous, highly abundant chloroplast-specific rubisco gene, the maize-specific zein gene and the recombinant cry1Ab gene. PCR analysis revealed that small chloroplast- and maize-specific DNA fragments were detectable in contents of rumen, abomasums, jejunum, caecum and colon and occasionally in visceral tissues. In contrast, no fragments of the recombinant cry1Ab gene were detectable in gastrointestinal (GI) contents. The Cry1Ab protein was analysed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting technique. Neither ELISA nor immunoblotting yielded positive signals of immunoactive Cry1Ab protein in GI contents and tissues of fallow deer fed with GM maize. In conclusion, after uptake of GM maize, neither cry1Ab-specific gene fragments nor Cry1Ab protein were detected in the GI tract of fallow deer, indicating complete digestion of the GM maize. Additional investigations on the germination capacity of conventional rapeseed and maize seed after ingestion by fallow deer and faecal excretion (endozoochory) were performed to draw conclusions regarding a potential spreading of germinable GM crop seed by deer. Time-Series Photometry of Globular Clusters: M62 (NGC 6266), the Most RR Lyrae-Rich Globular Cluster in the Galaxy?
We present new time-series CCD photometry, in the B and V bands, for the
moderately metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -1.3) Galactic globular cluster (GC) M62 (NGC
6266). The present dataset is the largest obtained so far for this cluster, and
consists of 168 images per filter, obtained with the Warsaw 1.3m telescope at
the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) and the 1.3m telescope of the Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), in two separate runs over the time span of
three months. The procedure adopted to detect the variable stars was the
optimal image subtraction method (ISIS v2.2), as implemented by Alard. The
photometry was performed using both ISIS and DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME. We have
identified 245 variable stars in the cluster fields that have been analyzed so
far, of which 179 are new discoveries. Of these variables, 133 are fundamental
mode RR Lyrae stars (RRab), 76 are first overtone (RRc) pulsators, 4 are type
II Cepheids, 25 are long-period variables (LPV), 1 is an eclipsing binary, and
6 are not yet well classified. Such a large number of RR Lyrae stars places M62
among the top two most RR Lyrae-rich (in the sense of total number of RR Lyrae
stars present) GCs known in the Galaxy, second only to M3 (NGC 5272) with a
total of 230 known RR Lyrae stars. Since this study covers most but not all of
the cluster area, it is not unlikely that M62 is in fact the most RR Lyrae-rich
GC in the Galaxy. In like vein, we were also able to detect the largest sample
of LPV's known in a Galactic GC. We analyze a variety of Oosterhoff type
indicators for the cluster, and conclude that M62 is an Oosterhoff type I
system. This is in good agreement with the moderately high metallicity of the
cluster, in spite of its predominantly blue horizontal branch morphology --
which is more typical of Oosterhoff type II systems. We thus conclude that

The Status of Clinical Faculty in the Legal Academy: Report of the Task Force on the Status of Clinicians and the Legal Academy
In the midst of ongoing debates within the legal academy and the American Bar Association on the need for \u27practice-ready law school graduates through enhanced attention to law clinics and externships and on the status of faculty teaching in those courses, this report identifies and evaluates the most appropriate modes for clinical faculty appointments. Drawing on data collected through a survey of clinical program directors and faculty, the report analyzes the five most identifiable clinical faculty models: unitary tenure track; clinical tenure track; long-term contract; short-term contract; and clinical fellowships. It determines that, despite great strides in the growth of clinical legal education in the last 30 years, equality between clinical and non-clinical faculty remains elusive. Clinical faculty still lag behind non-clinical faculty in security of position and governance rights at most law schools. The report then identifies four core principles that should guide decisions about clinical faculty appointments: 1) clinical education is a foundational and essential component of legal education; 2) the legal academy and profession benefit from full inclusion of clinical faculty on all matters affecting the mission, function, and direction of law schools; 3) there is no justification for creating hierarchies between clinical and non-clinical faculty; and 4) the standards for hiring, retention, and promotion of clinical faculty must recognize and value the responsibilities and methodologies of clinical teaching. The report concludes that these core principles are best realized when full-time clinical faculty are appointed to a unitary tenure track. This conclusion does not ignore the imperfections of a tenure system. However, to the extent that tenure remains the strongest measure of the legal academy\u27s investment in its faculty and is the surest guarantee of academic freedom, inclusion in faculty governance and job security, the report recommends that law schools predominantly place their clinical faculty on dedicated tenure lines. In addition, it recommends that schools implement standards for hiring, promotion, and retention that reflect the teaching responsibilities and methodologies, as well as practice and service obligations, unique to their clinical faculty. To facilitate the development of such standards, the report suggests good practices for the appointment of clinical faculty on a unitary tenure track
Prototyping of petalets for the Phase-II Upgrade of the silicon strip tracking detector of the ATLAS Experiment
In the high luminosity era of the Large Hadron Collider, the HL-LHC, the
instantaneous luminosity is expected to reach unprecedented values, resulting
in about 200 proton-proton interactions in a typical bunch crossing. To cope
with the resultant increase in occupancy, bandwidth and radiation damage, the
ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by an all-silicon system, the Inner
Tracker (ITk). The ITk consists of a silicon pixel and a strip detector and
exploits the concept of modularity. Prototyping and testing of various strip
detector components has been carried out. This paper presents the developments
and results obtained with reduced-size structures equivalent to those foreseen
to be used in the forward region of the silicon strip detector. Referred to as
petalets, these structures are built around a composite sandwich with embedded
cooling pipes and electrical tapes for routing the signals and power. Detector
modules built using electronic flex boards and silicon strip sensors are glued
on both the front and back side surfaces of the carbon structure. Details are
given on the assembly, testing and evaluation of several petalets. Measurement
results of both mechanical and electrical quantities are shown. Moreover, an
