Third Coast Housing Solutions: The Case for Bringing YIMBY Legal Activist Strategies to Chicago

    Get PDF
An insufficient supply of suitable housing stock is the root cause of issues like homelessness, overcrowding, and a cost burden on renters throughout the United States. A loose collective of activists and stakeholders comprise the YIMBY movement, an acronym for Yes In My Backyard. YIMBY advocates advance the perspective that additional housing stock is a necessary stratagem to improve housing availability and affordability, and they have used litigation as a tool towards developing new and diverse housing. This Comment examines the strategies currently used by legal activists in California, where impact litigation on this issue has been most prevalent. It also investigates whether these strategies could serve to improve the housing landscape in Chicago and, if so, how they could be most effectively adapted to the unique political and legal circumstances of the Chicago region

Design and characterization of programmable DNA nanotubes

    Get PDF
DNA self-assembly provides a programmable bottom-up approach for the synthesis of complex structures from nanoscale components. Although nanotubes are a fundamental form encountered in tile-based DNA self-assembly, the factors governing tube structure remain poorly understood. Here we report and characterize a new type of nanotube made from DNA double-crossover molecules (DAE-E tiles). Unmodified tubes range from 7 to 20 nm in diameter (4 to 10 tiles in circumference), grow as long as 50 μm with a persistence length of ~4 μm, and can be programmed to display a variety of patterns. A survey of modifications (1) confirms the importance of sticky-end stacking, (2) confirms the identity of the inside and outside faces of the tubes, and (3) identifies features of the tiles that profoundly affect the size and morphology of the tubes. Supported by these results, nanotube structure is explained by a simple model based on the geometry and energetics of B-form DNA

Precise wide range heatmeters for 1.5 K up to 80 K

    Get PDF
Two heatmeters were designed at CERN for applications below 20 K with the option to work also at temperatures up to 80 K. The new calibration principle and design permits the construction of wide rang e heatmeters with precision in the range of milliwatts. The calibration function takes into account the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of the heatmeter material. The heat flow meas urement is, therefore, independent of the base temperature, i.e. it is also independent on the temperature drop across thermal contact between heatmeter and the cold source. The simple calibration fun ction makes the heatmeter a user-friendly portable diagnostic device. It is possible to quantify parasitic heat flow without a previous calibration, or to calibrate the heatmeter during a measurement with a specimen
