    Recent progress in silica aerogel Cherenkov radiator

    In this paper, we present recent progress in the development of hydrophobic silica aerogel as a Cherenkov radiator. In addition to the conventional method, the recently developed pin-drying method for producing high-refractive-index aerogels with high transparency was studied in detail. Optical qualities and large tile handling for crack-free aerogels were investigated.     Molecular Classification of Enteroviruses Not Identified by Neutralization Tests

    We isolated six viruses from patients diagnosed with aseptic meningitis or hand, foot, and mouth disease. The cytopathic effect of these viruses on cultured cells was like that of enteroviruses. However, viral neutralization tests against standard antisera were negative. Phylogenetic analysis with the complete VP4 nucleotide sequences of these 6 viruses and 29 serotypes of enteroviruses classified 3 of the viruses as serotype echovirus type 18 (EV18) and 3 as serotype human enterovirus 71 (HEV71). These results were confirmed by remicroneutralization tests with HEV-monospecific antisera or an additional phylogenetic analysis with the complete VP4 nucleotide sequences. Phylogenetic analysis with complete VP4 genes is more useful than neutralization tests with enterovirus serotype-specific antisera in identifying enterovirus serotypes

    Changes in national parks (NP) governance include 1) change in NP management policy which was originally precedence for protection and preservation, now includes real economy for the community, 2) implementation process of the change at field level. This paper discusses the governance change in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS) and its impacts on resource users. Change in governance could take place if the interactive process that occurred between the Head of the National Park, field officers and the community included: (1) Clear and simple policy guidance from the Head of NP on the policy implementation of the new governance be given to field officers, (2) develop relationship between field officers and local community through active interaction. Shift in the implementation technique of NP governance for protection and preservation from "restrictions and provision of sanctions" to "participatory conservation" to achieve the goal of NP resources utilization for the community. The analysis showed that change in NP governance was achieved through the approach of participatory conservation processes, learning and increasing confidence that comes naturally among the field officers and local communities and conservation practices by local communities

    Effects of Birth Month on Talent Identification Participation and the Identification Process in Sports

    Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 2: Issue 1, Article 7, 2021. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of the birth month on Talent Identification (TI) participation and the identification process in sports. The subjects were 4th grade elementary school children (mean age, 9±5.8 years) who participated in the Talent Identification Project. The method of identification was two-stage. In the first stage, the 30 m sprint, standing broad jump, and medicine ball front throw (1 kg) were performed, and 99 boys and 97 girls with high overall scores were selected to participate in the second stage. In the second stage, in addition to the results of the first stage, the T-test, 20 m shuttle run, standing triple jump, rebound jump (RJ-index), medicine ball back throw (1 kg), and repeated horizontal jump were performed. In the T-test, subjects run straight to a point 10 m ahead, then, ran 5 m to the right, 10 m to the left, 5 m to the right, and returned 10 m back to the start. A total of 15 boys and 15 girls with high overall scores were selected from the second stage. As in a previous study, the birth month was divided into yearly quarters (1, April to June; 2, July to September; 3, October to December; and 4, January to March). Point of application #1: There was a bias in participation rates and final members in the TI project for 4th graders by birth month for both boys and girls. Point of application #2: In the case of 4th grade boys of the TI project, the medicine ball front throw, as an index of whole body power, was influenced by the birth month. Point of application #3: It was speculated that boys born between January and March had a smaller morphology (height and weight), and were disadvantaged in measurement tests related to morphology, such as the medicine ball front throw

    Thermoluminescence characteristics and chemical compositions of mesostases in ordinary chondrites

    Induced thermoluminescence (TL) images of ordinary chondrites, ALH-77214 (L3.4-3.5), Y-74191 (L3.6), ALH-77216 (L3.8) and ALH-78043 (L6), were measured by the TL spatial distribution readout system combined with a microscope and TL characteristics [peak temperature and peak width] of mesostases were analyzed. Their chemical compositions were also analyzed by an electron probe X-ray microanalyzer. We found that; (1) The mesostasis was responsible for much of the TL in the ordinary chondrites, (2) A mesostasis of normative anorthite compositions showed low peak temperature (∿90℃) and narrow width (∿65℃), while a mesostasis of normative albite compositions showed high peak temperature (∿125℃) and wide width (∿100℃), (3) A main phosphor in a low petrologic grade chondrite 3.5 was a high albite mesostasis, (4) Some chondrules in the same fragments of the type 3 chondrites showed no or weak TL emission and these mesostases had high normative albite. These facts suggest that in type 3 ordinary chondrites; (1) The post-accretional metamorphism cannot account for the coexistence of high albite mesostases with TL emission and no emission and a high anorthite mesostasis with TL emission, (2) Low petrologic grade chondrites 3.5 have a large population of slowly cooled chondrules

    Development of the photomultiplier tube readout system for the first Large-Sized Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray observatory. The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) of CTA targets 20 GeV -- 1 TeV gamma rays and has 1855 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) installed in the focal plane camera. With the 23 m mirror dish, the night sky background (NSB) rate amounts to several hundreds MHz per pixel. In order to record clean images of gamma-ray showers with minimal NSB contamination, a fast sampling of the signal waveform is required so that the signal integration time can be as short as the Cherenkov light flash duration (a few ns). We have developed a readout board which samples waveforms of seven PMTs per board at a GHz rate. Since a GHz FADC has a high power consumption, leading to large heat dissipation, we adopted the analog memory ASIC "DRS4". The sampler has 1024 capacitors per channel and can sample the waveform at a GHz rate. Four channels of a chip are cascaded to obtain deeper sampling depth with 4096 capacitors. After a trigger is generated in a mezzanine on the board, the waveform stored in the capacitor array is subsequently digitized with a low speed (33 MHz) ADC and transferred via the FPGA-based Gigabit Ethernet to a data acquisition system. Both a low power consumption (2.64 W per channel) and high speed sampling with a bandwidth of >>300 MHz have been achieved. In addition, in order to increase the dynamic range of the readout we adopted a two gain system achieving from 0.2 up to 2000 photoelectrons in total. We finalized the board design for the first LST and proceeded to mass production. Performance of produced boards are being checked with a series of quality control (QC) tests.     Does Metabolism of (S)-N-[1-(3-Morpholin-4-ylphenyl)ethyl]-3-phenylacrylamide Occur at the Morpholine Ring? Quantum Mechanical and Molecular Dynamics Studies

    The mechanism of Cytochrome P450 3A4 mediated metabolism of (S)-N- [1-(3-morpholin-4ylphenyl)ethyl]-3-phenylacrylamide and its difluoro analogue have been investigated by density functional QM calculations aided with molecular mechanics/molecular dynamics simulations. In this article, we mainly focus on the metabolism of the morpholine ring of substrates 1 and 2. The reaction proceeds via a hydrogen atom abstraction from the morpholine ring by Compound I on a doublet potential energy surface. A transition state was observed at an O-H distance of 1.46 Å for 1 while 1.38 Å for 2. Transition state for the rebound mechanism was not observed. The energy barrier for the hydrogen atom abstraction from 1 was found to be 7.01 kcal/mol in gas phase while 19.53 kcal/mol when the protein environment was emulated by COSMO. Similarly the energy barrier for substrate 2 was found to be 11.07 kcal/mol in gas phase while it was reduced to 12.99 kcal/mol in protein environment. Our previous study reported energy barriers for phenyl hydroxylation of 7.4 kcal/mol. Large energy barriers for morpholine hydroxylation indicates that hydroxylation at the phenyl ring may be preferred over morpholine. MD simulations in protein environment indicated that hydrogen atom at C4 position of phenyl ring remains in closer proximity to oxyferryl oxygen of the heme moiety as compared to morpholine hydrogen and hence greater chance to metabolize at phenyl ring
