Kinetics of nitric oxide formation and decomposition
Experiments on shock wave structure were conducted in the 12 inch shock tube facility, and it is shown that this work was motivated by the need for improved kinetics for the modeling of NO production in space shuttle flow fields. The experiments on shock structure involved simultaneous observations of pressure and temperature on the wall of the shock tube during reflection of normal shock waves in inert gases
384 in „Koers” Junie 1958)
Not Discerning the Body in 1 Corinthians 11:29 in the Light of Pauline Eucharistic Theology of 1 Corinthians
Theological trends determine the specific emphases of the confessional doctrines of the Church. As throughout the history of the Church when new trends and theological postulates appear, the student of theology is called upon to examine carefully their content on the basis of Scripture in order to reject or absorb these propositions into his own theology. Twentieth century theology, captivated by the ecumenical movement, is engaged in renewed study of the particu1ar doctrines of the Church and Sacraments. The purpose of this thesis is to present for the reader\u27s evaluation a brief study of a phrase from 1 Cor. 11:29 often quoted by modern theologians, not discerning the body
Differences between bone mineral density, lean and fat mass of HIV-positive and HIV-negative black women
Objectives: To investigate the differences between bone mineral density (BMD), lean and fat mass of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-) positive and HIV-negative black women and to investigate factors associated with low BMD.Methods: Case-control study of black women (n = 565) aged 29–65 years from Potchefstroom, North West province, South Africa, based on secondary analysis of data. Total BMD, left femur neck of the hip (LFN BMD), spine BMD, total fat, fat-free tissue mass and percentage body fat (%BF) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results: HIV-negative women had significantly higher median BMD, %BF, appendicular skeletal mass (ASM), ASM index, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference than HIV-positive women. When the groups were matched for age and BMI, only spine BMD was marginally lower in HIV-positive women. In the total group, age, smoking and HIV status were associated with lower BMD, while calcium intake was positively associated with BMD. Similar variables were associated with BMD in HIV-negative women, while age and educational status were associated with BMD in HIV-positive women. Conclusion: Low BMD was more common among HIV-positive than HIV-negative women. Older HIV-positive women with low educational status are particularly at risk
Kinetics of the reaction of nitric oxide with hydrogen
Mixtures of NO and H2 diluted in argon or krypton were heated by incident shock waves, and the infrared emission from the fundamental vibration-rotation band of NO at 5.3 microns was used to monitor the time-varying NO concentration. The reaction kinetics were studied in the temperature range 2400-4500 K using a shock-tube technique. The decomposition of nitric oxide behind the shock was found to be modeled well by a fifteen-reaction system. A principle result of the study was the determination of the rate constant for the reaction H + NO yields N + OH, which may be the rate-limiting step for NO removal in some combustion systems. Experimental values of k sub 1 were obtained for each test through comparisons of measured and numerically predicted NO profiles

Emerging targeted strategies for the treatment of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a widespread genetic disease that leads to renal failure in the majority of patients. The very first pharmacological treatment, tolvaptan, received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2018 after previous approval in Europe and other countries. However, tolvaptan is moderately effective and may negatively impact a patient's quality of life due to potentially significant side effects. Additional and improved therapies are still urgently needed, and several clinical trials are underway, which are discussed in the companion paper MĂĽller and Benzing (Management of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease-state-of-the-art) Clin Kidney J 2018; 11: i2-i13. Here, we discuss new therapeutic avenues that are currently being investigated at the preclinical stage. We focus on mammalian target of rapamycin and dual kinase inhibitors, compounds that target inflammation and histone deacetylases, RNA-targeted therapeutic strategies, glucosylceramide synthase inhibitors, compounds that affect the metabolism of renal cysts and dietary restriction. We discuss tissue targeting to renal cysts of small molecules via the folate receptor, and of monoclonal antibodies via the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor. A general problem with potential pharmacological approaches is that the many molecular targets that have been implicated in ADPKD are all widely expressed and carry out important functions in many organs and tissues. Because ADPKD is a slowly progressing, chronic disease, it is likely that any therapy will have to continue over years and decades. Therefore, systemically distributed drugs are likely to lead to potentially prohibitive extra-renal side effects during extended treatment. Tissue targeting to renal cysts of such drugs is one potential way around this problem. The use of dietary, instead of pharmacological, interventions is another
Opmerkings oor Sotho-Morfologie
A Causal Algebra for Liouville Exponentials
A causal Poisson bracket algebra for Liouville exponentials on a cylinder is
derived using an exchange algebra for free fields describing the in and out
asymptotics. The causal algebra involves an even number of space-time points
with a minimum of four. A quantum realisation of the algebra is obtained which
preserves causality and the local form of non-equal time brackets.Comment: 10 page
