    Simulation study of a highly efficient, high resolution X-ry sensor based on self-organizing aluminum oxide

    State of the art X-ray imaging sensors comprise a trade-off between the achievable efficiency and the spatial resolution. To overcome such limitations, the use of structured and scintillator filled aluminum oxide (AlOx) matrices has been investigated. We used Monte-Carlo (MC) X-ray simulations to determine the X-ray imaging quality of these AlOx matrices. Important factors which influence the behavior of the matrices are: filling factor (surface ratio between channels and 'closed' AlOx), channel diameter, aspect ratio, filling material etc. Therefore we modeled the porous AlOx matrix in several different ways with the MC X-ray simulation tool ROSI [1] and evaluated its properties to investigate the achievable performance at different X-ray spectra, with different filling materials (i.e. scintillators) and varying channel height and pixel readout.     Room-temperature near-infrared silicon carbide nanocrystalline emitters based on optically aligned spin defects

    Bulk silicon carbide (SiC) is a very promising material system for bio-applications and quantum sensing. However, its optical activity lies beyond the near infrared spectral window for in-vivo imaging and fiber communications due to a large forbidden energy gap. Here, we report the fabrication of SiC nanocrystals and isolation of different nanocrystal fractions ranged from 600 nm down to 60 nm in size. The structural analysis reveals further fragmentation of the smallest nanocrystals into ca. 10-nm-size clusters of high crystalline quality, separated by amorphization areas. We use neutron irradiation to create silicon vacancies, demonstrating near infrared photoluminescence. Finally, we detect, for the first time, room-temperature spin resonances of these silicon vacancies hosted in SiC nanocrystals. This opens intriguing perspectives to use them not only as in-vivo luminescent markers, but also as magnetic field and temperature sensors, allowing for monitoring various physical, chemical and biological processes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Sensory arrays made of coupled excitable elements can improve both their input sensitivity and dynamic range due to collective non-linear wave properties. This mechanism is studied in a neural network of electrically coupled (e.g. via gap junctions) elements subject to a Poisson signal process. The network response interpolates between a Weber-Fechner logarithmic law and a Stevens power law depending on the relative refractory period of the cell. Therefore, these non-linear transformations of the input level could be performed in the sensory periphery simply due to a basic property: the transfer function of excitable media.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    How to Educate Entrepreneurs?

    Entrepreneurship education has two purposes: To improve studentsā€™ entrepreneurial skills and to provide impetus to those suited to entrepreneurship while discouraging the rest. While entrepreneurship education helps students to make a vocational decision its effects may conflict for those not suited to entrepreneurship. This study shows that vocational and the skill formation effects of entrepreneurship education can be identified empirically by drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This is embedded in a structural equation model which we estimate and test using a robust 2SLS estimator. We find that the attitudinal factors posited by the Theory of Planned Behavior are positively correlated with studentsā€™ entrepreneurial intentions. While conflicting effects of vocational and skill directed course content are observed in some individuals, overall these types of content are complements. This finding contradicts previous results in the literature. We reconcile the conflicting findings and discuss implications for the design of entrepreneurship courses

    Metagenomics: A viable tool for reconstructing herbivore diet

    Metagenomics can generate data on the diet of herbivores, without the need for primer selection and PCR enrichment steps as is necessary in metabarcoding. Metagenomic approaches to diet analysis have remained relatively unexplored, requiring validation of bioinformatic steps. Currently, no metagenomic herbivore diet studies have utilized both chloroplast and nuclear markers as reference sequences for plant identification, which would increase the number of reads that could be taxonomically informative. Here, we explore how in silico simulation of metagenomic data sets resembling sequences obtained from faecal samples can be used to validate taxonomic assignment. Using a known list of sequences to create simulated data sets, we derived reliable identification parameters for taxonomic assignments of sequences. We applied these parameters to characterize the diet of western capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus) located in Norway, and compared the results with metabarcoding trnL P6 loop data generated from the same samples. Both methods performed similarly in the number of plant taxa identified (metagenomics 42 taxa, metabarcoding 43 taxa), with no significant difference in species resolution (metagenomics 24%, metabarcoding 23%). We further observed that while metagenomics was strongly affected by the age of faecal samples, with fresh samples outperforming old samples, metabarcoding was not affected by sample age. On the other hand, metagenomics allowed us to simultaneously obtain the mitochondrial genome of the western capercaillies, thereby providing additional ecological information. Our study demonstrates the potential of utilizing metagenomics for diet reconstruction but also highlights key considerations as compared to metabarcoding for future utilization of this technique

    Dimensionality effects in restricted bosonic and fermionic systems

    The phenomenon of Bose-like condensation, the continuous change of the dimensionality of the particle distribution as a consequence of freezing out of one or more degrees of freedom in the low particle density limit, is investigated theoretically in the case of closed systems of massive bosons and fermions, described by general single-particle hamiltonians. This phenomenon is similar for both types of particles and, for some energy spectra, exhibits features specific to multiple-step Bose-Einstein condensation, for instance the appearance of maxima in the specific heat. In the case of fermions, as the particle density increases, another phenomenon is also observed. For certain types of single particle hamiltonians, the specific heat is approaching asymptotically a divergent behavior at zero temperature, as the Fermi energy ĻµF\epsilon_{\rm F} is converging towards any value from an infinite discrete set of energies: Ļµiiā‰„1{\epsilon_i}_{i\ge 1}. If ĻµF=Ļµi\epsilon_{\rm F}=\epsilon_i, for any i, the specific heat is divergent at T=0 just in infinite systems, whereas for any finite system the specific heat approaches zero at low enough temperatures.     The renormalized quasiparticle-RPA is reformulated for even-even nuclei using restrictions imposed by the commutativity of the phonon creation operator with the total particle number operator.     The effect of tourism education on students? entrepreneurial vocation

    This paper aims to examine how higher education affects entrepreneurial vocation in a very specific segment, namely university education in tourism. We used a theoretical approach based on the psychological foundations of intentional theory to analyse a sample of 122 graduate and undergraduate university students in tourism from the perspective of higher education. The results show the differential effect of curricular and extracurricular activities on intentions, attitudes and behavioural control, while there is very little effect on the development of entrepreneurial competencies

    Economic liberalization and the antecedents of top management teams: evidence from Turkish 'big' business

    There has been an increased interest in the last two decades in top management teams (TMTs) of business firms. Much of the research, however, has been US-based and concerned primarily with TMT effects on organizational outcomes. The present study aims to expand this literature by examining the antecedents of top team composition in the context of macro-level economic change in a late-industrializing country. The post-1980 trade and market reforms in Turkey provided the empirical setting. Drawing upon the literatures on TMT and chief executive characteristics together with punctuated equilibrium models of change and institutional theory, the article develops the argument that which firm-level factors affect which attributes of TMT formations varies across the early and late stages of economic liberalization. Results of the empirical investigation of 71 of the largest industrial firms in Turkey broadly supported the hypotheses derived from this premise. In the early stages of economic liberalization the average age and average organizational tenure of TMTs were related to the export orientation of firms, whereas in later stages, firm performance became a major predictor of these team attributes. Educational background characteristics of teams appeared to be under stronger institutional pressures, altering in different ways in the face of macro-level change
