A genetic algorithm based determination of the ground and excited ( 1 L b ) state structure and the orientation of the transition dipole moment of benzimidazolew

    Get PDF
The structure of benzimidazole has been determined in the electronic ground and excited states using rotationally resolved electronic spectroscopy. The rovibronic spectra of four isotopomers and subsequently the structure of benzimidazole have been automatically assigned and fitted using a genetic algorithm based fitting strategy. The lifetimes of the deuterated isotopomers have been shown to depend on the position of deuteration. The angle of the transition dipole moment with the inertial a-axis could be determined to be À301. Structures and transition dipole moment orientation have been calculated at various levels of theory and were compared to the experimental results

    Viscosity solutions with shocks

    Get PDF
A solution of single nonlinear first order equations may develop jump discontinuities even if initial data is smooth. Typical examples include a crude model equation describing some bunching phenomena observed in epitaxial growth of crystals as well as conservation laws where jump discontinuities are called shocks. Conventional theory of viscosity solutions does not apply. We introduce a notion of proper (viscosity) solutions to track whole evolutions for such equations in multi-dimensional spaces. We establish several versions of comparison principles. We also study the vanishing viscosity method to construct a unique global proper solution at least when the evolution is monotone in time or the initial data is monotone in some sense under additional technical assumptions. In fact, we prove that the graph of approximate solutions converges to that of a proper solution in the Hausdorff distance topology. Such a convergence is also established for conservation laws with monotone data. In particular, local uniform convergence outside shocks is proved

Competitive tactics, generic strategies and firm performance in banking industry in Cambodia

Professional Doctorate - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)The study was undertaken to identify Porter’s (1985) generic strategies employed by commercial banks in Cambodia. It also explored the performance differences between each generic strategy group. The study also aimed to identify competitive tactics and their associated performance. Competitive tactics are competitive methods employed by the banks such as vigorous cost reduction, pursuing high technology, or targeting a special segment of the markets to obtain competitive advantages in the industry. Generic strategies refers to Porter’s competitive strategies which include cost leadership, differentiation, focus (focus on cost or focus on differentiation), and stuck-in-the-middle strategies. Each competitive tactic is clustered in accordance with Porter’s generic strategies. Firm performance refers to financial performance such as profit margin, return on asset, and return on equity. Nevertheless, only return on asset (ROA) is used in this study as it is a primary banking industry measure (FDIC, 1995) and it is also consistent with the measurements of bank performance in previous studies (Power and Hanh, 2004, Hanh and Power, 2010). The questionnaires, which include questions about competitive tactics, were sent to senior management of the banks such as CEOs or presidents of banks to complete. The performance of each bank- such as financial information was taken from public available information such as annual reports. Then, statistical methods were used to analyse the data to identify competitive tactics and generic strategies employed by the banks and their relationship with firm performance. The study identified the strategies used by commercial banks in Cambodia. Porter’s (1985) generic strategies were employed by all commercial banks in Cambodia; nevertheless, most of them used combination of Porter’s (1985) generic strategies rather than pure strategy. Additionally, the study found that the performance difference between each strategic group was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, it was found that some strategy groups had higher performance than others. Regarding competitive tactics which support each generic strategy, the study found that most competitive tactics were not associated with performance. The study also found that none of the combination of competitive tactics within and between each generic strategy contributed to performance

An examination of the patterns of access and use of the internet by youth: the case of Dar es Salaam region

This paper reports the results of the study which investigated the patterns of access and the use of the Internet by youth in Dar es Salaam Region. The objectives of this study were to investigate categories of youth [by age, gender, employment status and level of education] who use the Internet Café services; to find out the type of information accessed and how it is used; to gather opinions of youth and Internet Café administrators on potential impact of the Internet on people and to recommend ways for promoting positive use of the Internet especially by youth. Data were collected from 15 Internet Cafés which involved 77 respondents composed of Internet café users, Internet administrators and Internet café owners. Self administered questionnaires, focused group discussions and participant observation methods were used to collect data. The study revealed a high dominance of young educated Tanzanians on the use of the Internet Cafés where males outnumbered females. The study also revealed that the Internet is mainly used as a communication and entertainment tool; the use of Internet for business and e-commerce is very insignificant. The strengths of the Internet were stated as easy, cheap and quick means of communication, easy access to academic materials via online libraries and promotion of business through the web. On the other hand the study revealed that the Internet offers direct exposure to pornography, criminal networks and prostitution sites and that it leads to Internet addiction. The findings of the study revealed that the low use of the Internet for business, education and e-commerce can be improved through development of human resource. ICT infrastructure should be developed in different socio-economic sectors and that Kiswahili should be used in designing local websites so as to enable those with limitations to the English language to use the Internet. Lastly, there must be a clear national policy to guide the development of Internet industry in Tanzania. University of Dar es Salaam Library Journal Vol.6(1) 2004: 29-4

A quantitative compactness estimate for scalar conservation laws

In the case of a scalar conservation law with convex flux in space dimension one, P. D. Lax proved [Comm. Pure and Appl. Math. 7 (1954)] that the semigroup defining the entropy solution is compact in L for each positive time. The present note gives an estimate of the -entropy in L of the set of entropy solutions at time t > 0 whose initial data run through a bounded set in L1. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
