Sialoblastoma- long-term follow-up and remission for a rare salivary malignancy

    Get PDF
Sialoblastoma is a rare salivary neoplasm which presents either congenitally or during early infancy. It was originally considered a benign neoplasm, however a number of reported cases have documented locoregional recurrence and distant metastases. Currently, there is no consensus on the appropriate treatment for this neoplasm. We report on long term follow-up of a patient with metastatic sialoblastoma, and a brief discussion of the possible treatment modalities currently being considered

Diseases of the salivary glands in infants and adolescents

Abstract

Background

Diseases of the salivary glands are rare in infants and children (with the exception of diseases such as parotitis epidemica and cytomegaly) and the therapeutic regimen differs from that in adults. It is therefore all the more important to gain exact and extensive insight into general and special aspects of pathological changes of the salivary glands in these age groups. Etiology and pathogenesis of these entities is still not yet fully known for the age group in question so that general rules for treatment, based on clinical experience, cannot be given, particularly in view of the small number of cases of the different diseases. Swellings of the salivary glands may be caused by acute and chronic inflammatory processes, by autoimmune diseases, by duct translocation due to sialolithiasis, and by tumors of varying dignity. Clinical examination and diagnosis has also to differentiate between salivary gland cysts and inflammation or tumors.

Conclusion

Salivary gland diseases are rare in childhood and adolescence. Their pattern of incidence differs very much from that of adults. Acute and chronic sialadenitis not responding to conservative treatment requires an appropriate surgical approach. The rareness of salivary gland tumors is particularly true for the malignant parotid tumors which are more frequent in juvenile patients, a fact that has to be considered in diagnosis and therapy.</p

Soft tissue chondroma of the hard palate: A case report

Soft tissue chondroma of the palate is a rare lesion. We report a rare case of soft tissue chondroma of the hard palate with a review of the literature. A 59-year-old man was referred to our department because of a symptomatic mass on the median anterior margin of the hard palate of 4 year\u27s duration. The lesion was approximately 15 mm Ɨ 10 mm Ɨ 8 mm in size and pedunculated. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia, and the pathological diagnosis was soft tissue chondroma. The histopathological findings suggested that the heterotopic formation of cartilage was caused by the metaplastic change of mesenchymal cells into chondrocytes. Postoperative wound healing has been uneventful, with no sign of recurrence during 2 years after surgery

The aim of this work is to identify the priorities of the chosen actors for tackling climate change and identifying their key differences. In order to achieve this objective, the research contains an analysis of the selected actorā€™s climate policy documents using the critical analysis methodology. The theoretical basis of this research consists of description and clarification of the policy implementation process. The empirical part of this work consists of an analysis of the three selected actor`s climate policy documents, their assessment, and a description about the historical development of the problem. A hypothesis was put forward within this research: The main differences in the implementation of climate policy are related to economic priorities and ideological approaches. This hypothesis was partially confirmed within this research

    Peripheral Osteoma of the Mandible

Osteomas of the facial bones are a rare entity and very few cases have been reported in the literature. Osteomas are benign neoplasms, often asymptomatic and consist of well-differentiated matured bone. There are three varieties of osteomas- the central type arising from the endosteum, the peripheral type arising from the periosteum, and the extra-skeletal soft tissue osteomas which usually develops within the muscle. In the facial bones, both central and peripheral osteomas have been described. Peripheral osteomas have been described to occur in the frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses, but are not common in jawbones. We describe a rare case of symptomatic peripheral osteoma of mandible in a middle-aged female patient
