An alternative test to check the validity of convergence results

    Get PDF
This paper presents a simple method for identifying distributional dynamic properties of economies using the ideas of concordance and discordance. It can be employed to examine the strength and validity of the results of other methods. The method has the advantage of comparing distributions at two points without relying on intermediary data between the two time points. We present results that suggest there is more ‘strong-divergence’ than ‘strong-convergence’ in GDP between countries over the time period 1960-2000 although the distribution exhibits both convergent and divergent characteristics

Jørgen Moe (1813–1882) is best known for his work as a folklorist, but he was also a poet, pastor and finally bishop in the diocese of Kristiansand. This article examines some of the cultural and theological motivations of his ministerial work, based on poems, sermons and documents from his years as a bishop. The article shows how Moe’s aesthetic and pedagogical interests are reflected in this period and how he influenced Norwegian church life through his pupils J. C. Heuch and Gustav Jensen.

Author's version of an article in the journal: Teologisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/tt/2014/04/kontemplativ_handlingsrettet_spiritualitet_-_stille_stund_Contemplation and belief in guidance from God had a distinct design in the international ecumenical revival the Oxford Group which gained great support in the interwar period. In this movement, contemplation, called quiet time, was focused on intention and action in order to grasp and carry out God’s guidance. The article examines teaching about and practice of quiet time and guidance in the Oxford Group and shows how these phenomena relate to a broader historical context within Christianity. Notes made by the Norwegian leader of the movement, Erling Wikborg, are used as examples

Evolving timber school building design in Norway

Due to the eminent importance of global sustainability, Norwegian municipalities as acting clients for school buildings, have initiated the usage of massive timber (Cross Laminated Timber) in new buildings. This paper is aiming to gain knowledge regarding the construction of massive timber school buildings by examining three case studies located in Norway. The findings suggest that appear to be four main factors that determine the choice and placement of material in the selected buildings: sustainability, topography, function and structure. Sustainability goals advocate maximization of usage of massive timber in the school buildings. Topography indicates that underground volumes are constructed in concrete and steel. Function and structure restrict the usage of CLT in main teaching spaces that have smaller spans, while acoustically challenging spaces like music rooms and auditoriums are constructed in steel and concrete. Literature also showed an evolution of massive timber construction in Norway, with contemporary architects and engineers achieving larger room spans than 10 years ago. Based on the findings, CLT construction is increasing and can change the way schools are being built in the Nordics.acceptedVersio

    Single-mode tunable erbium:ytterbium fibre Fabry-Perot laser

    No full text
A compact tunable single-mode fiber laser is developed by using a novel combination of high-gain erbium: ytterbium (Er:Yb) phosphate fiber and fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavity configurations. Experiments demonstrate the shortest Er:Yb phosphate FFP laser ever reported, which has a 100µm cavity length with a continuous wavelength tuning range over 4.52nm, as limited by the sharp fiber gain peak. In addition, an alternative 3-mirror laser design has also demonstrated single-mode lasing operation
