Electron-vibration interaction in single-molecule junctions: from contact to tunneling regime

    Get PDF
Point contact spectroscopy on a H2O molecule bridging Pt electrodes reveals a clear crossover between enhancement and reduction of the conductance due to electron-vibration interaction. As single channel models predict such a crossover at transmission probability of t=0.5, we used shot noise measurements to analyze the transmission and observed at least two channels across the junction where the dominant channel has t=0.51+/-0.01 transmission probability at the crossover conductance, which is consistent with the predictions for single-channel models.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 4 figure

Free Versus Constrained Evolution of the 2+1 Equivariant Wave Map

We compare the numerical solutions of the 2+1 equivariant Wave Map problem computed with the symplectic, constraint respecting Rattle algorithm and the well known fourth order Runge-Kutta method. We show the advantages of the Rattle algorithm for constrained system compared to the free evolution with the Runge-Kutta method. We also present an expression, which represents the energy loss due to constraint violation. Taking this expression into account we can achieve energy conservation for the Runge-Kutta scheme, which is better than with the Rattle method. Using the symplectic scheme with constraint enforcement we can reproduce previous calculations of the equivariant case without imposing the symmetry explicitly, thereby confirming that the critical behaviour is stable.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. The purpose of this study was to investigate inbreeding depression (DE) in castor bean. From a population derived from the Guarani cultivar, 60 mother plants were sampled. Three types of progenies were obtained from each one: from self-pollination (AU), from crosses (CR) and from open pollination (PL). Grain yield of the progenies was evaluated in two locations. There was a strong interaction of progenies x locations, which led to obtaining estimates within each location. Broad variation was observed in inbreeding depression, with mean values of 6.7% and 13.4%, comparing AU progenies with PL progenies. It was observed that the population has high potential for selecting promising inbred lines. The frequency of mother plants generating progenies with simultaneous high general combination capacity and low inbreeding depression was low. Recurrent selection will increase the occurrence of parent plants associating these two properties, which is necessary for obtaining superior synthetic varieties. Key words: Castor bean, inbreeding depression, synthetic varieties, G x E interaction

Due to the increasing relevance of demographic developments for human resources management, the analysis of goals and effects of corporate family-consciousness has become a central field of research. The concept of an input/output analysis presented in the paper shows that the berufundfamilie-index offers a quantification of corporate family-consciousness but also reveals that the output has not yet been conceptualized consistently. The first part of this paper closes this gap of research by issuing a system of goals of corporate family-consciousness. Central goals are employee loyalty and recruiting. With regard to current employees these goals relate to job satisfaction and motivation, absenteeism, accumulation of human capital, customer loyalty, cost reduction and efficiency of labour. With regard to potential employees they relate to the pool and quality of applicants as well as to the reduction of opportunity costs caused by vacancies. The second part of the paper describes the survey of 1001 companies in Germany based on the construction mentioned before. It shows that corporate family-consciousness significantly contributes to achieving the goals. Furthermore it proves that the more family-conscious a company is, the better the goals mentioned can be achieved. The empirical findings indicate that family friendly human resources management constitutes an important parameter in managerial decision making

Do topology and ferromagnetism cooperate at the EuS/Bi2_2Se3_3 interface?

We probe the local magnetic properties of interfaces between the insulating ferromagnet EuS and the topological insulator Bi2_2Se3_3 using low energy muon spin rotation (LE-ÎĽ\muSR). We compare these to the interface between EuS and the topologically trivial metal, titanium. Below the magnetic transition of EuS, we detect strong local magnetic fields which extend several nm into the adjacent layer and cause a complete depolarization of the muons. However, in both Bi2_2Se3_3 and titanium we measure similar local magnetic fields, implying that their origin is mostly independent of the topological properties of the interface electronic states. In addition, we use resonant soft X-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to probe the electronic band structure at the interface between EuS and Bi2_2Se3_3. By tuning the photon energy to the Eu anti-resonance at the Eu M5M_5 pre-edge we are able to detect the Bi2_2Se3_3 conduction band, through a protective Al2_2O3_3 capping layer and the EuS layer. Moreover, we observe a signature of an interface-induced modification of the buried Bi2_2Se3_3 wave functions and/or the presence of interface states

Effects of Chronic Morphine Treatment on Î’-Endorphin-Related Peptides in the Caudal Medulla and Spinal Cord

The effects of chronic morphine treatment on Î’-endorphin (Î’E)-immunoreactive (Î’E-ir) peptide levels were determined in the rat caudal medulla and different areas of the spinal cord. Seven days of morphine pelleting had no effect on total Î’E-ir peptides in the caudal medulla. In contrast, it significantly increased Î’E-ir peptide concentrations in the cervical and thoracic regions of the spinal cord compared with placebo-pelleted controls, whereas in the lumbosacral region this trend did not reach statistical significance. Injections of the opiate receptor antagonist naloxone 1 h before the rats were killed had no effect on the morphine-induced increases in the cord. Chromatographic analyses revealed that enzymatic processing of Î’E-related peptides in the spinal cord seemed unaffected by the morphine and/or naloxone treatments. In light of previous data showing that morphine down-regulates Î’E biosynthesis in the hypothalamus, the present results suggest that the regulation of Î’E-ir peptides in the spinal cord is distinct from that found in other CNS areas. These data provide support for previous results suggesting that Î’E-expressing neurons may be intrinsic to the spinal cord.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65660/1/j.1471-4159.1993.tb03518.x.pd
