    First-Order Query Evaluation with Cardinality Conditions

    We study an extension of first-order logic that allows to express cardinality conditions in a similar way as SQL's COUNT operator. The corresponding logic FOC(P) was introduced by Kuske and Schweikardt (LICS'17), who showed that query evaluation for this logic is fixed-parameter tractable on classes of structures (or databases) of bounded degree. In the present paper, we first show that the fixed-parameter tractability of FOC(P) cannot even be generalised to very simple classes of structures of unbounded degree such as unranked trees or strings with a linear order relation. Then we identify a fragment FOC1(P) of FOC(P) which is still sufficiently strong to express standard applications of SQL's COUNT operator. Our main result shows that query evaluation for FOC1(P) is fixed-parameter tractable with almost linear running time on nowhere dense classes of structures. As a corollary, we also obtain a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for counting the number of tuples satisfying a query over nowhere dense classes of structures

    Intravitreal bevacizumab for the treatment of macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion

    Purpose: To evaluate the effect of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) injections on visual acuity (VA) and foveal retinal thickness in patients with macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.Methods: A prospective, non-comparative, consecutive, interventional case series of 34 patients. Patients received repeated intravitreal injections of 1.25 mg bevacizumab. Main outcome measures were VA (Snellen charts and ETDRS) and retinal thickness (optical coherence tomography measurements) in a follow-up period of 6 months.Results: Patients presented at a mean age of 69 years (range 44--86). Mean duration of symptoms was 40 weeks (range 1--300). Mean (SD) VA at baseline was 0.79 (0.39) logMAR, improving to 0.51 (0.34) logMAR at 6 months (p = 0.009). Mean number of letters on the ETDRS chart at baseline was 45.3 (19.0), improving to 60.6 (19.9) at 6 months (p = 0.003). Mean (SD) retinal thickness at baseline was 474 (120) \textgreekmm, declining to 316 (41) \textgreekmm at 6 months.Conclusion: Intravitreal injection of 1.25 mg bevacizumb appears to be an effective treatment option for branch retinal vein occlusion

    The Complexity of Repairing, Adjusting, and Aggregating of Extensions in Abstract Argumentation

    We study the computational complexity of problems that arise in abstract argumentation in the context of dynamic argumentation, minimal change, and aggregation. In particular, we consider the following problems where always an argumentation framework F and a small positive integer k are given. - The Repair problem asks whether a given set of arguments can be modified into an extension by at most k elementary changes (i.e., the extension is of distance k from the given set). - The Adjust problem asks whether a given extension can be modified by at most k elementary changes into an extension that contains a specified argument. - The Center problem asks whether, given two extensions of distance k, whether there is a "center" extension that is a distance at most (k-1) from both given extensions. We study these problems in the framework of parameterized complexity, and take the distance k as the parameter. Our results covers several different semantics, including admissible, complete, preferred, semi-stable and stable semantics

    Desynchronization and Wave Pattern Formation in MPI-Parallel and Hybrid Memory-Bound Programs

    Analytic, first-principles performance modeling of distributed-memory parallel codes is notoriously imprecise. Even for applications with extremely regular and homogeneous compute-communicate phases, simply adding communication time to computation time does often not yield a satisfactory prediction of parallel runtime due to deviations from the expected simple lockstep pattern caused by system noise, variations in communication time, and inherent load imbalance. In this paper, we highlight the specific cases of provoked and spontaneous desynchronization of memory-bound, bulk-synchronous pure MPI and hybrid MPI+OpenMP programs. Using simple microbenchmarks we observe that although desynchronization can introduce increased waiting time per process, it does not necessarily cause lower resource utilization but can lead to an increase in available bandwidth per core. In case of significant communication overhead, even natural noise can shove the system into a state of automatic overlap of communication and computation, improving the overall time to solution. The saturation point, i.e., the number of processes per memory domain required to achieve full memory bandwidth, is pivotal in the dynamics of this process and the emerging stable wave pattern. We also demonstrate how hybrid MPI-OpenMP programming can prevent desirable desynchronization by eliminating the bandwidth bottleneck among processes. A Chebyshev filter diagonalization application is used to demonstrate some of the observed effects in a realistic setting.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure

    Improper colourings inspired by Hadwiger’s conjecture

    Hadwiger’s Conjecture asserts that every Kt-minor-free graph has a proper (t − 1)-colouring. We relax the conclusion in Hadwiger’s Conjecture via improper colourings. We prove that every Kt-minor-free graph is (2t − 2)-colourable with monochromatic components of order at most 1/2 (t − 2). This result has no more colours and much smaller monochromatic components than all previous results in this direction. We then prove that every Kt-minor-free graph is (t − 1)-colourable with monochromatic degree at most t − 2. This is the best known degree bound for such a result. Both these theorems are based on a decomposition method of independent interest. We give analogous results for Ks,t-minorfree graphs, which lead to improved bounds on generalised colouring numbers for these classes. Finally, we prove that graphs containing no Kt-immersion are 2-colourable with bounded monochromatic degree

    Compact Labelings For Efficient First-Order Model-Checking

    We consider graph properties that can be checked from labels, i.e., bit sequences, of logarithmic length attached to vertices. We prove that there exists such a labeling for checking a first-order formula with free set variables in the graphs of every class that is \emph{nicely locally cwd-decomposable}. This notion generalizes that of a \emph{nicely locally tree-decomposable} class. The graphs of such classes can be covered by graphs of bounded \emph{clique-width} with limited overlaps. We also consider such labelings for \emph{bounded} first-order formulas on graph classes of \emph{bounded expansion}. Some of these results are extended to counting queries

    A contemporary comparison of the effect of shunt type in hypoplastic left heart syndrome on the hemodynamics and outcome at stage 2 reconstruction

    ObjectiveWe compare the hemodynamics and perioperative course of shunt type in hypoplastic left heart syndrome at the time of stage 2 reconstruction and longer-term survival.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the echocardiograms, catheterizations, and hospital records of all patients who had a stage 1 reconstruction between January 2002 and May 2005 and performed a cross-sectional analysis of hospital survivors.ResultsOne hundred seventy-six patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and variants underwent a stage 1 reconstruction with either a right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduit (n = 62) or a modified Blalock–Taussig shunt (n = 114). The median duration of follow-up is 29.1 months (range, 0-57 months). By means of Kaplan–Meier analysis, there is no difference in survival at 3 years (right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduit: 73% [95% confidence limit, 59%–83%] vs modified Blalock–Taussig shunt: 69% [95% confidence limit, 59%–77%]; P = .6). One hundred twenty-four patients have undergone stage 2 reconstruction (78 modified Blalock–Taussig shunts and 46 right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduits). At the time of the stage 2 reconstruction, patients with right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduits were younger (153 days [range, 108–340 days]; modified Blalock–Taussig shunt, 176 days [range, 80–318 days]; P = .03), had lower systemic oxygen saturation (73% [range, 58%–85%] vs 77% [range, 57%–89%], P < .01), and had higher preoperative hemoglobin levels (15.8 g/dL [range, 13–21 g/dL] vs 14.8 g/dL [range, 12–19 g/dL], P < .01) compared with those of the modified Blalock–Taussig shunt group. By means of echocardiographic evaluation, there was a higher incidence of qualitative ventricular dysfunction in patients with right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduits (14/46 [31%] vs 9/73 [12%], P = .02). However, no difference was observed in common atrial pressure or the arteriovenous oxygen difference.ConclusionInterim analyses suggest no advantage of one shunt type over another. This report raises concern of late ventricular dysfunction and outcome in patients with a right ventricle–pulmonary artery conduit

    Towards an improvement of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age uncertainties:Modelling OSL ages with systematic errors, stratigraphic constraints and radiocarbon ages using the R package BayLum

    International audienceAbstract. Statistical analysis has become increasingly important in optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating since it has become possible to measure signals at the single-grain scale. The accuracy of large chronological datasets can benefit from the inclusion, in chronological modelling, of stratigraphic constraints and shared systematic errors. Recently, a number of Bayesian models have been developed for OSL age calculation; the R package “BayLum” presented herein allows different models of this type to be implemented, particularly for samples in stratigraphic order which share systematic errors. We first show how to introduce stratigraphic constraints in BayLum; then, we focus on the construction, based on measurement uncertainties, of dose covariance matrices to account for systematic errors specific to OSL dating. The nature (systematic versus random) of errors affecting OSL ages is discussed, based – as an example – on the dose rate determination procedure at the IRAMAT-CRP2A laboratory (Bordeaux). The effects of the stratigraphic constraints and dose covariance matrices are illustrated on example datasets. In particular, the benefit of combining the modelling of systematic errors with independent ages, unaffected by these errors, is demonstrated. Finally, we discuss other common ways of estimating dose rates and how they may be taken into account in the covariance matrix by other potential users and laboratories. Test datasets are provided as a Supplement to the reader, together with an R markdown tutorial allowing the reproduction of all calculations and figures presented in this study

    Periodic stellar variability from almost a million NGTS light curves

    We analyse 829,481 stars from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to extract variability periods. We utilise a generalisation of the autocorrelation function (the G-ACF), which applies to irregularly sampled time series data. We extract variability periods for 16,880 stars from late-A through to mid-M spectral types and periods between 0.1 and 130 days with no assumed variability model. We find variable signals associated with a number of astrophysical phenomena, including stellar rotation, pulsations and multiple-star systems. The extracted variability periods are compared with stellar parameters taken from Gaia DR2, which allows us to identify distinct regions of variability in the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. We explore a sample of rotational main-sequence objects in period-colour space, in which we observe a dearth of rotation periods between 15 and 25 days. This 'bi-modality' was previously only seen in space-based data. We demonstrate that stars in sub-samples above and below the period gap appear to arise from a stellar population not significantly contaminated by excess multiple systems. We also observe a small population of long-period variable M-dwarfs, which highlight a departure from the predictions made by rotational evolution models fitted to solar-type main-sequence objects. The NGTS data spans a period and spectral type range that links previous rotation studies such as those using data from Kepler, K2 and MEarth
