Nonlinear Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Magnetic Waveguide
We have studied the internal and external dynamics of a Bose-Einstein
condensate in an anharmonic magnetic waveguide. An oscillating condensate
experiences a strong coupling between the center of mass motion and the
internal collective modes. Due to the anharmonicity of the magnetic potential,
not only the center of mass motion shows harmonic frequency generation, but
also the internal dynamics exhibit nonlinear frequency mixing. We describe the
data with a theoretical model to high accuracy. For strong excitations we test
the experimental data for indications of a chaotic behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The Hard X-Ray View of Reflection, Absorption, and the Disk-Jet Connection in the Radio-Loud AGN 3C 33
We present results from Suzaku and Swift observations of the nearby radio
galaxy 3C 33, and investigate the nature of absorption, reflection, and jet
production in this source. We model the 0.5-100 keV nuclear continuum with a
power law that is transmitted either through one or more layers of pc-scale
neutral material, or through a modestly ionized pc-scale obscurer. The standard
signatures of reflection from a neutral accretion disk are absent in 3C 33:
there is no evidence of a relativistically blurred Fe K emission line,
and no Compton reflection hump above 10 keV. We find the upper limit to the
neutral reflection fraction is R<0.41 for an e-folding energy of 1 GeV. We
observe a narrow, neutral Fe K line, which is likely to originate at
least 2,000 R_s from the black hole. We show that the weakness of reflection
features in 3C 33 is consistent with two interpretations: either the inner
accretion flow is highly ionized, or the black-hole spin configuration is
retrograde with respect to the accreting material.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in Ap
Towards More Practical Linear Programming-based Techniques for Algorithmic Mechanism Design
R. Lavy and C. Swamy (FOCS 2005, J. ACM 2011) introduced a general method for
obtaining truthful-in-expectation mechanisms from linear programming based
approximation algorithms. Due to the use of the Ellipsoid method, a direct
implementation of the method is unlikely to be efficient in practice. We
propose to use the much simpler and usually faster multiplicative weights
update method instead. The simplification comes at the cost of slightly weaker
approximation and truthfulness guarantees
Thermal Instability and the Formation of Clumpy Gas Clouds
The radiative cooling of optically thin gaseous regions and the formation of
a two-phase medium and of cold gas clouds with a clumpy substructure is
investigated. In optically thin clouds, the growth rate of small isobaric
density perturbations is independent of their length scale. However, the growth
of a perturbation is limited by its transition from isobaric to isochoric
cooling. The temperature at which this transition occurs decreases with the
length scale of the perturbation. Consequently small scale perturbations have
the potential to reach higher amplitudes than large scale perturbations. When
the amplitude becomes nonlinear, advection overtakes the pressure gradient in
promoting the compression resulting in an accelerated growth of the
disturbance. The critical temperature for transition depends on the initial
amplitude. The fluctuations which can first reach nonlinearity before their
isobaric to isochoric transition will determine the characteristic size and
mass of the cold dense clumps which would emerge from the cooling of an
initially nearly homogeneous region of gas. Thermal conduction is in general
very efficient in erasing isobaric, small-scale fluctuations, suppressing a
cooling instability. A weak, tangled magnetic field can however reduce the
conductive heat flux enough for low-amplitude fluctuations to grow isobarically
and become non-linear if their length scales are of order 0.01 pc. Finally, we
demonstrate how a 2-phase medium, with cold clumps being pressure confined in a
diffuse hot residual background component, would be sustained if there is
adequate heating to compensate the energy loss.Comment: 26 pages, Latex, 10 postscript figures, ApJ, in pres
Pharmacologic and clinical evaluation of posaconazole.
Posaconazole, a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent, is approved for the prevention of invasive aspergillosis and candidiasis in addition to the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis. There is evidence of efficacy in the treatment and prevention of rarer, more difficult-to-treat fungal infections. Posaconazole oral suspension solution has shown limitations with respect to fasting state absorption, elevated gastrointestinal pH and increased motility. The newly approved delayed-release oral tablet and intravenous solution formulations provide an attractive treatment option by reducing interpatient variability and providing flexibility in critically ill patients. On the basis of clinical experience and further clinical studies, posaconazole was found to be a valuable pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of life-threatening fungal infections. This review will examine the development history of posaconazole and highlight the most recent advances
Experimental investigation of ultracold atom-molecule collisions
Ultracold collisions between Cs atoms and Cs2 dimers in the electronic ground
state are observed in an optically trapped gas of atoms and molecules. The Cs2
molecules are formed in the triplet ground state by cw-photoassociation through
the outer well of the 0g-(P3/2) excited electronic state. Inelastic
atom-molecule collisions converting internal excitation into kinetic energy
lead to a loss of Cs2 molecules from the dipole trap. Rate coefficients are
determined for collisions involving Cs atoms in either the F=3 or F=4 hyperfine
ground state and Cs2 molecules in either highly vibrationally excited states
(v'=32-47) or in low vibrational states (v'=4-6) of the a ^3 Sigma_u^+ triplet
ground state. The rate coefficients beta ~10^{-10} cm^3/s are found to be
largely independent of the vibrational and rotational excitation indicating
unitary limited cross sections.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
The Early Palomar Program (1950-1955) for the Discovery of Classical Novae in M81: Analysis of the Spatial Distribution, Magnitude Distribution, and Distance Suggestion
Data obtained in the 1950-1955 Palomar campaign for the discovery of
classical novae in M81 are set out in detail. Positions and apparent B
magnitudes are listed for the 23 novae that were found. There is modest
evidence that the spatial distribution of the novae does not track the B
brightness distribution of either the total light or the light beyond an
isophotal radius that is 70\arcsec from the center of M81. The nova
distribution is more extended than the aforementioned light, with a significant
fraction of the sample appearing in the outer disk/spiral arm region. We
suggest that many (perhaps a majority) of the M81 novae that are observed at
any given epoch (compared with say years ago) are daughters of
Population I interacting binaries. The conclusion that the present day novae
are drawn from two population groups, one from low mass white dwarf secondaries
of close binaries identified with the bulge/thick disk population, and the
other from massive white dwarf secondaries identified with the outer thin
disk/spiral arm population, is discussed. We conclude that the M81 data are
consistent with the two population division as argued previously from (1) the
observational studies on other grounds by Della Valle et al. (1992, 1994),
Della Valle & Livio (1998), and Shafter et al. (1996) of nearby galaxies, (2)
the Hatano et al. (1997a,b) Monte Carlo simulations of novae in M31 and in the
Galaxy, and (3) the Yungelson et al. (1997) population synthesis modeling of
nova binaries. Two different methods of using M81 novae as distance indicators
give a nova distance modulus for M81 as , consistent with the
Cepheid modulus that is the same value.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, accepted to PAS
The Active Nucleus of IC4970: A Nearby Example of Merger-Induced Cold-Gas Accretion
We present results from Chandra X-ray and Spitzer mid-infrared observations
of the interacting galaxy pair NGC6872/IC4970 in the Pavo galaxy group and show
that the smaller companion galaxy IC4970 hosts a highly obscured active
galactic nucleus (AGN). The 0.5-10 keV X-ray luminosity of the nucleus is
variable, increasing by a factor 2.9 to 1.7 x 10^{42} erg/s (bright state) on
~100 ks timescales. The X-ray spectrum of the is heavily absorbed (N_H = 3 x
10^{23} cm^{-2}) for power law models with Gamma = 1.5-2.0 and shows a clear
6.4 keV Fe Kalpha line with equivalent width of 144-195 eV. Limits on the
diffuse emission in IC4970 from Chandra X-ray data suggest that the available
power from Bondi accretion of hot interstellar gas may be an order of magnitude
too small to power the AGN. Spitzer images show that 8 micron nonstellar
emission is concentrated in the central 1 kpc of IC4970, consistent with high
obscuration in this region. The mid-infrared colors of the nucleus are
consistent with those expected for a highly obscured AGN. Taken together these
data suggest that the nucleus of IC4970 is a Seyfert 2, triggered and fueled by
cold material supplied to the central supermassive black hole as a result of
the off-axis collision of IC4970 with the cold-gas rich spiral galaxy NGC6872.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ, MIR flux conversion error

Polarizations and Nullcone of Representations of Reductive Groups
The paper starts with the following simple observation. Let V be a representation of a reductive group G, and let f_1,f_2,...,f_n be homogeneous invariant functions. Then the polarizations of f_1,f_2,...,f_n define the nullcone of k 0} h(t) x = 0 for all x in L. This is then applied to many examples. A surprising result is about the group SL(2,C) where almost all representations V have the property that all linear subspaces of the nullcone are annihilated. Again, this has interesting applications to the invariants on several copies. Another result concerns the n-qubits which appear in quantum computing. This is the representation of a product of n copies of on the n-fold tensor product C^2 otimes C^2 otimes ... otimes C^2. Here we show just the opposite, namely that the polarizations never define the nullcone of several copies if n <= 3. (An earlier version of this paper, distributed in 2002, was split into two parts; the first part with the title ``On the nullcone of representations of reductive groups'' is published in Pacific J. Math. {bf 224} (2006), 119--140.
