    Extremely broad hysteresis in the magnetization process of α-Dy2S3 single crystal induced by high field cooling

    α-Dy2S3 possesses orthorhombic crystal structure having two crystallograpically inequivalent Dy sites. Magnetization process of α-Dy2S3 single crystal after cooling in the high magnetic field of 18 T has been investigated. The magnetization under the field of 18 T along the α-axis on the cooling process from 150 K shows step-like rises at 70 and 40 K and reaches about 9 ÎŒB per one Dy3+ at 1.5 K. This value, which corresponds to 90 % of full saturation moment of Dy3+, is much larger than 6 ÎŒB obtained at the same conditions after cooling in no magnetic field (zero-field cooling; ZFC). After cooling to 1.5 K, the magnetization while decreasing field shows abrupt drops at 3.0 and 1.7 T, and then comes to 0 ÎŒB at 0 T. Subsequently, while increasing field, the magnetization demonstrates a similar curve to that obtained after ZFC without step-like rise below 13.1 T. At ÎŒ0H = 13.1 T, the magnetization rises suddenly and agrees with the curve for the decreasing process. This irreversible magnetization process yields extremely broad hysteresis having width of ÎŒ0ΔH = 11.4 T. Broader hysteresis and narrower one are also observed at 4.2 and 10 K, respectively

    Discovery of Non Thermal X-Rays from the Northwest Shell of the New SNR RX J1713.7-3946: The Second SN1006 ?

    We report ASCA results of a featureless X-ray spectrum from RX J1713.7-3946, a new shell-like SNR discovered with the ROSAT all sky survey. The northwest part of RX J1713.7-3946 was in the field of the ASCA Galactic Plane Survey Project and was found to exhibit a shell-like structure. The spectrum, however shows neither line emission nor any signature of a thermal origin. Instead, a power-law model with a photon index of 2.4-2.5 gives reasonable fit to the spectrum, suggesting a non-thermal origin. Together with the similarity to SN1006, we propose that RX J1713.7-3946 is the second example, after SN1006, of a synchrotron X-ray radiation from a shell of SNRs. Since the synchrotron X-rays suggest existence of extremely high energy charged particles in the SNR shell, our discovery should have strong impact on the origin of the cosmic X-rays.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figure

    Effect of pressure on the magnetic, transport, and thermal-transport properties of the electron-doped manganite CaMn1−x_{1-x}Sbx_{x}O3_{3}

    We have demonstrated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on magnetic and transport properties, and thermal transport properties in electron-doped manganites CaMn1−x_{1-x}Sbx_{x}O3_{3}. The substitution of Sb5+^{5+} ion for Mn 4+^{4+}site of the parent matrix causes one-electron doping with the chemical formula CaMn1−2x4+^{4+}_{1-2x}Mnx3+^{3+}_{x}Sbx5+^{5+}_{x}O3_{3} accompanied by a monotonous increase in unit cell volume as a function of xx. Upon increasing the doping level of Sb, the magnitudes of both electrical resistivity and negative Seebeck coefficient are suppressed at high temperatures, indicating the electron doping. Anomalous diamagnetic behaviors at x=0.05x=0.05 and 0.08 are clearly observed in field cooled dc magnetization. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on dc magnetization is in contrast to the chemical pressure effect due to Sb doping. The dynamical effect of ac magnetic susceptibility measurement points to the formation of the magnetically frustrated clusters such as FM clusters embedded in canted AFM matrix.Comment: 12 pages,11 figures, 3 table

    A Chandrasekhar Mass Progenitor for the Type Ia Supernova Remnant 3C 397 from The Enhanced Abundances of Nickel and Manganese

    Full text link
    Despite decades of intense efforts, many fundamental aspects of Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) remain elusive. One of the major open questions is whether the mass of the exploding white dwarf (WD) is close to the Chandrasekhar limit. Here we report the detection of strong K-shell emission from stable Fe-peak elements in the Suzaku X-ray spectrum of the Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397. The high Ni/Fe and Mn/Fe mass ratios (0.11-0.24 and 0.018-0.033, respectively) in the hot plasma component that dominates the K-shell emission lines indicate a degree of neutronization in the SN ejecta which can only be achieved by electron captures in the dense cores of exploding WDs with a near-Chandrasekhar mass. This suggests a single-degenerate origin for 3C 397, since Chandrasekhar mass progenitors are expected naturally if the WD accretes mass slowly from a companion. Together with other results supporting the double-degenerate scenario, our work adds to the mounting evidence that both progenitor channels make a significant contribution to the SN Ia rate in star-forming galaxies.Comment: Accepted by ApJL; 6 pages with 4 figures and 1 tabl
