    The Neural Representation of Prospective Choice during Spatial Planning and Decisions

    We are remarkably adept at inferring the consequences of our actions, yet the neuronal mechanisms that allow us to plan a sequence of novel choices remain unclear. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how the human brain plans the shortest path to a goal in novel mazes with one (shallow maze) or two (deep maze) choice points. We observed two distinct anterior prefrontal responses to demanding choices at the second choice point: one in rostrodorsal medial prefrontal cortex (rd-mPFC)/superior frontal gyrus (SFG) that was also sensitive to (deactivated by) demanding initial choices and another in lateral frontopolar cortex (lFPC), which was only engaged by demanding choices at the second choice point. Furthermore, we identified hippocampal responses during planning that correlated with subsequent choice accuracy and response time, particularly in mazes affording sequential choices. Psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses showed that coupling between the hippocampus and rd-mPFC increases during sequential (deep versus shallow) planning and is higher before correct versus incorrect choices. In short, using a naturalistic spatial planning paradigm, we reveal how the human brain represents sequential choices during planning without extensive training. Our data highlight a network centred on the cortical midline and hippocampus that allows us to make prospective choices while maintaining initial choices during planning in novel environments

    Structure-Property Relationships of Silicone Biofouling-Release Coatings: Effect of Silicone Network Architecture on Pseudobarnacle Attachment Strengths

    Model silicone foul-release coatings with controlled molecular architecture were evaluated to determine the effect of compositional variables such as filler loading and crosslink density on pseudobarnacle attachment strength. Pseudobarnacle adhesion values correlated with filler loadings in both condensation and hydrosilylation-cured silicones. Variation of crosslink density of hydrosilylation-cured silicones had an insignificant effect on attachment strength. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the mode of failure upon detachment of the pseudobarnacle was dependent upon the crosslink density; samples with high crosslink density failed cohesively within the silicone

    Silicone Foul Release Coatings: Effect of the Interaction of Oil and Coating Functionalities on the Magnitude of Macrofouling Attachment Strengths

    Silicone biofouling release coatings have been shown to be an effective method of combating fouling. Nearly all silicone foul release coatings are augmented with an oil additive to decrease macrofouling attachment strength. This paper addresses the effect of the type of oil that is incorporated into the silicone coating and the type of silicone coating itself (silica vs calcium carbonate filled) on macrofouling adhesion strengths to the coating. It was found that not only are the main effects of oil type and silicone coating type important in determining the magnitude of the attachment strength of the organism, but the interaction term (oil type crossed with coating type) is highly significant for all organisms studied, except oysters at the University of Hawaii test site (Oahu, Hawaii) which has a significance level of α =0.1. Each of the organisms exhibited a unique response to the various silicone fouling release coatings. Thus, in order to predict the effectives of foul release coatings, the composition variables of the coatings and the type of target organisms must be considered

    Biofouling and barnacle adhesion data for fouling‐release coatings subjected to static immersion at seven marine sites

    Little is known about the performance of fouling‐release coatings at different geographical locations. An investigation was designed to measure the differences in biofouling and biofouling adhesion strength on three known silicone formulations and an epoxy control at seven static immersion sites located in California, Florida, Hawaii, Hong Kong, India, Italy and Singapore. The study found that whilst the relative performance of the coatings was similar at each site, there were statistically significant differences in the type and intensity of fouling that developed on the coatings and in barnacle adhesion strength among sites. The results emphasize the importance of evaluating potential coatings at more than one static immersion site

    Evaluation of age at symptom onset, proband status, and sex as predictors of disease severity in pediatric catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia

    Background: Children with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) are at risk for sudden death, and a risk stratification tool does not exist. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether proband status, age at symptom onset, and/or sex are independent predictors of cardiac events. Methods: A multicenter, ambispective, cohort of pediatric CPVT patients was categorized by sex, proband status, and age at symptom onset (D1: first decade of life [symptom onset <10 years] or D2: second decade of life [symptom onset 10–18 years, inclusive]). Demographics, therapy, genetics, and outcomes were compared between groups. Results: A total of 133 patients were included and stratified into 58 D1 and 75 D2 patients (68 female and 65 male; 106 probands and 27 relatives). Localization of RYR2 variants to hotspots differed based on proband status and age at symptom onset. The cardiac event rate was 33% (n = 44/133), inclusive of a 3% (n = 4/133) mortality rate, over a median of 6 years (interquartile range 3–11) after time of symptom onset. Proband status, rather than age at of symptom onset or sex, was an independent predictor of time to first cardiac event (P = .008; hazard ratio = 4.4). The 5-, 10- and 15-year event-free survival rates for probands were 77%, 56%, and 46%, respectively, and for relatives were 96%, 91%, and 86%, respectively. Event risk after diagnosis was 48% (32/67) in patients on ÎČ-blocker or flecainide alone vs 10% (5/48) in patients on ÎČ-blocker plus flecainide and/or left cardiac sympathetic denervation (P <.001). Conclusion: Proband status, but not age at symptom onset or male sex, independently predicted an earlier onset of cardiac events. A larger sample size would enable a comprehensive investigation of other risk factors
