    The Use of the Vocational Preference Inventory with a North Dakota Indian Population

    Problem: The purpose of this study was to develop normative data on the Vocational Preference Inventory with an Indian\u27 population and to determine the relationships between the VPI scales and the Occupational Aspiration Scale, scholastic achievement, intelligence, and selected occupational information. The study also examined the differences between a North Dakota non-Indian high school sample and a North Dakota high school sample on the VPI scales. Procedure: The research sample for this study consisted of 161 North Dakota Indian high school juniors and seniors enrolled at the Turtle Mountain - Community School, Belcourt, North Dakota, and the Standing Rock Community School, Fort Yates, North Dakota, for the 1970-71 academic year. All students were administered the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI), the Occupational Information Form (OIF), the Occupational Aspiration Scale (OAS), and the Student Report Form (SRF) in the early fall. Subjects were divided into groups based on sex and the reservation on which they resided. Scholastic achievement and intelligence test scores were obtained from the cumulative records. The statistical techniques employed were a two-way analysis of variance, Dunn\u27s c test and Scheffe\u27s test for mean comparisons, and Pearson\u27s Product-Moment correlation technique. The .05 level was used as the criterion level for statistical significance. Results: 1. Significant differences were found for the mean score comparisons of three VPI scales. The Turtle Mountain Community School females scored lower on the Artistic scale than did the non-Indian females, while in this school the Indian males scored higher on the Self-Control scale than did the non-Indian males. Both Indian male groups scored higher on the Infrequency scale than did the non-Indian males. 2. A significant negative relationship was found between the Realistic scale and intelligence test scores for the Turtle Mountain Community School males, while a significant positive relationship was found between the Status scale and intelligence test scores for these males. 3. Significant negative relationships were found between the ITED standard composite scores and the Realistic scale for the Turtle Mountain Community School males, the Conventional scale for the Turtle Mountain Community School females, and the Infrequency scale for the Standing Rock Community School females. A significant positive relationship was found between the ITED standard composite scores and the Intellectual scale for the Standing Rock Community School males. 4. Significant differences were found on the six vocational scales of the VPI with the Standing Rock males scoring higher than the Turtle Mountain males on the Artistic scale, while the Standing Rock females scored higher on the Intellectual scale than did the Turtle Mountain females. 5. No significant relationships were found between the Total Acquiescence scale of the VPI and knowledge of work or location of work in specific occupations for all Indian student groups. 6. A positive relationship was found between the total OAS scores and the VPI Status scale scores for all Indian student groups

    Optical and X-ray Properties of the Swift BAT-detected AGN

    The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst satellite has detected a largely unbiased towards absorption sample of local (0.03 \approx 0.03) AGN, based solely on their 14--195 keV flux. In the first 9 months of the survey, 153 AGN sources were detected. The X-ray properties in the 0.3--10 keV band have been compiled and presented based on analyses with XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and the Swift XRT (Winter et al. 2009). Additionally, we have compiled a sub-sample of sources with medium resolution optical ground-based spectra from the SDSS or our own observations at KPNO. In this sample of 60 sources, we have classified the sources using standard emission line diagnostic plots, obtained masses for the broad line sources through measurement of the broad Hβ\beta emission line, and measured the [OIII] 5007\AA luminosity of this sample. Based on continuum fits to the intrinsic absorption features, we have obtained clues about the stellar populations of the host galaxies. We now present the highlights of our X-ray and optical studies of this unique sample of local AGNs, including a comparison of the 2--10 keV and 14--195 keV X-ray luminosities with the [OIII] 5007\AA luminosity and the implications of our results towards measurements of bolometric luminosities.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings for 'X-ray Astronomy 2009', Bologna 09/2009, AIP Conference Series, Eds.     Composition of bioactive secondary metabolites and mutagenicity of Sambucus nigra L. Fruit at different stages of ripeness

    The relationship between the content of bioactive compounds and mutagenic activity of elderberry fruit at different stages of ripeness was investigated. Significant differences in the antioxidant profiles (TLC, HPLC with post-column derivatization) and antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, and FC tests) were observed for studied elderberry extracts. The more ripen the fruit at the time of harvest were, the higher the content of anthocyanins (increase from 0 to 7.8 mg g−1d.w.) and antioxidant activity of the extracts (about 5-fold increase) were. Cyanogenic glycosides were not detected at any stage of ripeness. Accordingly, Ames MPF test (Xenometrix) did not reveal any mutagenicity. Our study suggests that instability of cyanogenic glycosides ensures safety of food/pharmaceutical products based on even not fully ripen elderberry fruit

    Compton-thick accretion in the local universe

    Heavily obscured accretion is believed to represent an important stage in the growth of supermassive black holes and to play an important role in shaping the observed spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background. Hard X-ray (E > 10 keV) selected samples are less affected by absorption than samples selected at lower energies, and are therefore one of the best ways to detect and identify Compton-thick (CT, log NH ≥ 24) active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this letter we present the first results of the largest broadband (0.3–150 keV) X-ray spectral study of hard X-ray selected AGNs to date, focusing on the properties of heavily obscured sources. Our sample includes the 834 AGNs (728 non-blazar, average redshift z sime 0.055) reported in the 70-month catalog of the all-sky hard X-ray Swift/Burst Alert Monitor survey. We find 55 CT AGNs, which represent 7.6-2.1+1.1 % of our non-blazar sample. Of these, 26 are reported as candidate CT AGNs for the first time. We correct for selection bias and derive the intrinsic column density distribution of AGNs in the local universe in two different luminosity ranges. We find a significant decrease in the fraction of obscured Compton-thin AGNs for increasing luminosity, from 46 ± 3% (for log L14-195 = 40–43.7) to 39 ± 3% (for log L14-195 = 43.7–46). A similar trend is also found for CT AGNs. The intrinsic fraction of CT AGNs with log NH = 24–25 normalized to unity in the NH = 20–25 range is 27 ± 4%, and is consistent with the observed value obtained for AGNs located within 20 Mpc

    [O III]λ5007\lambda 5007 and X-ray Properties of a Complete Sample of Hard X-ray Selected AGNs in the Local Universe

    We study the correlation between the [O III]λ5007\lambda 5007 and X-ray luminosities of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), using a complete, hard X-ray (>10>10 keV) selected sample in the Swift/BAT 9-month catalog. From our optical spectroscopic observations at the South African Astronomical Observatory and the literature, a catalog of [O III]λ5007\lambda 5007 line flux for all 103 AGNs at Galactic latitudes of b>15|b|>15^\circ is complied. Significant correlations with intrinsic X-ray luminosity (LXL_{\rm X}) are found both for observed (L[O III]L_{\rm [O~III]}) and extinction-corrected (L[O III]corL_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}) luminosities, separately for X-ray unabsorbed and absorbed AGNs. We obtain the regression form of L[O III]L_{\rm [O~III]} L210  keV1.18±0.07\propto L_{\rm 2-10\; keV}^{1.18\pm0.07} and L[O III]corL_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor} L210  keV1.16±0.09\propto L_{\rm 2-10\; keV}^{1.16\pm0.09} from the whole sample. The absorbed AGNs with low (<<0.5\%) scattering fractions in soft X-rays show on average smaller L[O III]/LXL_{\rm [O~III]}/L_{\rm X} and L[O III]cor/LXL_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}/L_{\rm X} ratios than the other absorbed AGNs, while those in edge-on host galaxies do not. These results suggest that a significant fraction of this population are buried in tori with small opening angles. By using these L[O III]L_{\rm [O~III]} vs. LXL_{\rm X} correlations, the X-ray luminosity function of local AGNs (including Compton thick AGNs) in a standard population synthesis model gives much better agreement with the [O III]λ5007\lambda 5007 luminosity function derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey than previously reported. This confirms that hard X-ray observations are a very powerful tool to find AGNs with high completeness.Comment: 14 pages including 11 figures and 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ.     Life-long course and molecular characterization of the original Dutch family with epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy due to a homozygous novel plectin point mutation

    Plectin is one of the largest and most versatile cytolinker proteins known. Cloned and sequenced in 1991, it was later shown to have nonsense mutations in recessive epidermolysis bullosa with muscular dystrophy. A dominant mutation in the gene was found to cause epidermolysis bullosa simplex Ogna without muscular dystrophy. Here we report the DNA sequencing of the plectin gene (PLEC1) in a Dutch family originally described in 1972 as having epidermolysis bullosa with muscular dystrophy. The results revealed homozygosity for a new plectin nonsense mutation at position 13187 and its specific 8q24 marker haplotype profile. Western blotting of cultured fibroblasts and immunofluorescence microscopy of skin biopsy confirm that the plectin protein expression is grossly reduced or absent. A summary of the life-long clinical course of the two affected brothers homozygous for the new E1914X mutation is given

    The Transient Dendritic Solidification Experiment (TDSE)

    The study of steady-state dendritic growth has both validated many element of transport phenomena in dendritic growth, and yielded many new insights. Further development in simulation and modeling are needed, as is further understanding of the role of selection or scaling in dendritic growth. The TDSE contributes to the further study of dendritic phenomena by carefully measuring and modeling transient effects on dendritic growth. The major challenge encountered in measuring and analyzing the transient behavior of isothermal dendrites is defining precisely the initial conditions from which or to which the dendrite evolves. Our proposed pressure-mediated TDSE microgravity experiment, obviates this difficulty, because the transient occurs between two well-characterized steady-states, rather than between an ill-defined initial state and the final steady state. The major results expected are unique data on transient behavior that will extend the scientific bounds from the now well-understood thermal effects, and provide insight into interfacial dynamics where open questions remain
