Di-nucleus dynamics towards fusion of heavy nuclei

    Get PDF
This work has been first presented at : First Workshop on State of the Art in Nuclear Cluster Physics, 13/16-05-2008 Strasbourg (France)International audienceThe Two-Step Model for fusion of massive systems is briefly recapitulated, which clar- ifies the mechanism of so-called fusion hindrance. Since the neck changes the potential landscape, especially the height of the conditional saddle point, time evolution of the neck degree of freedom plays a crucial role in fusion. We analytically solve time-evolution of nuclear shape of the composite system from di-nucleus to mono-nucleus. The time- dependent distribution function of the neck is obtained, which elucidates dynamics of fusion processes in general, and thus, is useful for theoretical predictions on synthesis of the superheavy elements with various combinations of incident heavy ions

Gravitational Waves from Light Cosmic Strings: Backgrounds and Bursts with Large Loops

    Get PDF
The mean spectrum and burst statistics of gravitational waves produced by a cosmological population of cosmic string loops are estimated using analytic approximations, calibrated with earlier simulations. Formulas are derived showing the dependence of observables on the string tension, in the regime where newly-formed loops are relatively large, not very much smaller than the horizon. Large loops form earlier, are more abundant, and generate a more intense stochastic background and more frequent bursts than assumed in earlier background estimates, enabling experiments to probe lighter cosmic strings of interest to string theory. Predictions are compared with instrument noise from current and future experiments, and with confusion noise from known astrophysical gravitational wave sources such as stellar and massive black hole binaries. In these large-loop models, current data from millisecond pulsar timing already suggests that the tension is less than about 101010^{-10}, a typical value expected in strings from brane inflation. LISA will be sensitive to stochastic backgrounds created by strings as light as Gμ1015G\mu\approx 10^{-15}, at frequencies where it is limited by confusion noise of Galactic stellar populations; however, for those lightest detectable strings, bursts are rarely detectable.Comment: 22 pages, Latex, 1 figure, submitted to Phys Rev D; minor corrections and clarifications adde

Two-Step Model of Fusion for Synthesis of Superheavy Elements

    Get PDF
A new model is proposed for fusion mechanisms of massive nuclear systems where so-called fusion hindrance exists. The model describes two-body collision processes in an approaching phase and shape evolutions of an amalgamated system into the compound nucleus formation. It is applied to 48^{48}Ca-induced reactions and is found to reproduce the experimental fusion cross sections extremely well, without any free parameter. Combined with the statistical decay theory, residue cross sections for the superheavy elements can be readily calculated. Examples are given.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Algebraic approach to time-delay data analysis for LISA

Cancellation of laser frequency noise in interferometers is crucial for attaining the requisite sensitivity of the triangular 3-spacecraft LISA configuration. Raw laser noise is several orders of magnitude above the other noises and thus it is essential to bring it down to the level of other noises such as shot, acceleration, etc. Since it is impossible to maintain equal distances between spacecrafts, laser noise cancellation must be achieved by appropriately combining the six beams with appropriate time-delays. It has been shown in several recent papers that such combinations are possible. In this paper, we present a rigorous and systematic formalism based on algebraic geometrical methods involving computational commutative algebra, which generates in principle {\it all} the data combinations cancelling the laser frequency noise. The relevant data combinations form the first module of syzygies, as it is called in the literature of algebraic geometry. The module is over a polynomial ring in three variables, the three variables corresponding to the three time-delays around the LISA triangle. Specifically, we list several sets of generators for the module whose linear combinations with polynomial coefficients generate the entire module. We find that this formalism can also be extended in a straight forward way to cancel Doppler shifts due to optical bench motions. The two modules are infact isomorphic. We use our formalism to obtain the transfer functions for the six beams and for the generators. We specifically investigate monochromatic gravitational wave sources in the LISA band and carry out the maximisiation over linear combinations of the generators of the signal-to-noise ratios with the frequency and source direction angles as parameters.Comment: 27 Pages, 6 figure

The article describes the complexity of modern theoretical and practical approaches to the understanding of mental health and disease. Nozotsentrichesky and normotsentrichesky approaches are analyzed. The possibility of the use of general medical criteria dichotomy «norm/pathology» is discussed. From the standpoint of the modern paradigm of biopsychosocial unity of man analyzes the specificity criteria of mental norms of social and ethnocultural conditions. It describes the current criteria for the analysis - the presumption of mental health

Modular Superconducting Qubit Architecture with a Multi-chip Tunable Coupler

We use a floating tunable coupler to mediate interactions between qubits on separate chips to build a modular architecture. We demonstrate three different designs of multi-chip tunable couplers using vacuum gap capacitors or superconducting indium bump bonds to connect the coupler to a microwave line on a common substrate and then connect to the qubit on the next chip. We show that the zero-coupling condition between qubits on separate chips can be achieved in each design and that the relaxation rates for the coupler and qubits are not noticeably affected by the extra circuit elements. Finally, we demonstrate two-qubit gate operations with fidelity at the same level as qubits with a tunable coupler on a single chip. Using one or more indium bonds does not degrade qubit coherence or impact the performance of two-qubit gates.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Get PDF
Reducing the gap between professional opportunities of graduates of medical education institutions and needs of patients is the priority of medical education. The introduction of interactive methods, in particular the case study method, can help solve this problem. The aim of this study was to investigate how the application of the case method in medical education affects the learning outcomes of students and acquisition of practical experience. Case method was used to identify its impact on the acquisition of practical skills, abilities and clinical experience by future physicians. Students’ opinions on the effectiveness of the case method in gaining practical experience were surveyed. The study showed that the case method helped students find solutions required by clinical situations, as they used not only theoretical knowledge, but also acquired practical skills and clinical experience. The case method also increases students’ confidence in their professional abilities. This experimental study proved the high efficiency of using the case method in medical education to gain practical experience by students in the education institution. It can be useful for scholars and educators who are looking for, developing and implementing effective teaching methods that allow students to acquire the necessary competencies
