    This paper advances Picot and Baumann’s (2009) central paper on how organization and management theory (OMT) can enhance business infor-mation systems engineering (BISE). In particular, we extend their focus in three ways. We introduce the industry and inter-organizational relations as levels of analysis, which are of interests to BISE and we show specific methods to ad-vance the links between OMT and BISE. We exemplify these points by a case study on BreatheCorp., a multinational company that recently entered into the provision of eHealth-based ventilation care services in Germany. Through our empirical study, we can also contribute to theorizing the role of context for in-ter-organizational information systems (IOIS)

    Preferences under Ambiguity Without Event-Separability

    We propose and axiomatically characterize a representation of ambiguity sensitive preferences. The distinguishing feature of our axiomatization is that we do not require preferences to be event-wise separable over any domain of acts. Even without any such separability restrictions, we are able to uniquely elicit the decision maker's subjective probabilities. The novel axiom that allows us to do so expresses the idea that at least in the domain of a certain class of acts the decision maker exhibits a consistent tradeoff between risk and ambiguity concerns. Under our representation of her preferences, any act is assessed by its subjective expected utility and a residual that captures her assessment of the act's exposure to ambiguity

    On the relation between diffusion, sedimentation, and friction

    Since there exists in the literature some discrepancies in the formulation of the relation between diffusion, sedimentation, and friction of colloidal particles in solution, we rederive the relation between these transport phenomena in this paper. From the application of irreversible thermodynamics it is shown, that the relation between the experimentally accessible quantities like diffusion coefficient, sedimentation velocity, and osmotic compressibility can be obtained unambiguously. The relation between sedimentation velocity and frictional coefficient is discussed in detail, where we give an argumentation for the right expression between these two quantities

    Robust identification of dynamically distinct regions in stratified turbulence

    We present a new robust method for identifying three dynamically distinct regions in a stratified turbulent flow, which we characterise as quiescent flow, intermittent layers and turbulent patches. The method uses the cumulative filtered distribution function of the local density gradient to identify each region. We apply it to data from direct numerical simulations of homogeneous stratified turbulence, with unity Prandtl number, resolved on up to 8192×8192×40968192\times 8192\times 4096 grid points. In addition to classifying regions consistently with contour plots of potential enstrophy, our method identifies quiescent regions as regions where \unicode[STIX]{x1D716}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}N^{2}\sim O(1), layers as regions where \unicode[STIX]{x1D716}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}N^{2}\sim O(10) and patches as regions where \unicode[STIX]{x1D716}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}N^{2}\sim O(100). Here, \unicode[STIX]{x1D716} is the dissipation rate of turbulence kinetic energy, \unicode[STIX]{x1D708} is the kinematic viscosity and NN is the (overall) buoyancy frequency. By far the highest local dissipation and mixing rates, and the majority of dissipation and mixing, occur in patch regions, even when patch regions occupy only 5 % of the flow volume. We conjecture that treating stratified turbulence as an instantaneous assemblage of these different regions in varying proportions may explain some of the apparently highly scattered flow dynamics and statistics previously reported in the literature.The research activities of G.D.P. and S.dB.K. were funded by the US Office of Naval Research via grant N00014-15-1-2248.     Co-silencing of human Bub3 and dynein highlights an antagonistic relationship in regulating kinetochore-microtubule attachments

    We previously reported that the spindle assembly checkpoint protein Bub3 is involved in regulating kinetochore-microtubule (KT-MT) attachments. Also, Bub3 was reported to interact with the microtubule motor protein dynein. Here we examined how this interaction contributes to KT-MT attachments. Depletion of Bub3 or dynein induced misaligned chromosomes, consistent with their role in KT-MT attachments. Unexpectedly, co-silencing of both proteins partially suppressed the misalignment phenotype and restored chromosome congression. Consistent with these observations, KT-MT attachments in co-depleted cells were stable, able to drive chromosome congression, and produce inter-and intra-kinetochore stretch, indicating they are functional. We suggest that a mutual antagonism exists between Bub3 and dynein to ensure optimal KT-MT attachments. (C) 2015 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. Published by Elsevier B.V.
