    On Short-Term and Long-Term Behavior of Large Diameter above Ground Steel Storage Tanks Founded on Glacial Tills

    The paper summarizes settlement records taken over periods of weeks and up to 45 years on above ground steel storage tanks 20 m to 50 m in diameter, 14 m to 20 m high, founded on fine-grained glacial tills. Soil information for each of the tanks is provided from different sources such as conventional boreholes, test pits, and sometimes Dilatometer tests. Three newly constructed tanks have been instrumented with piezometers and a tank base hydraulic profiler for monitoring during hydrotesting. The presented long-term settlements for the older tanks, and the short-term monitoring data collected from the hydrotested tanks are examined and commented on with respect to the face value of the records. The ability to apply practical geotechnical engineering methods to provide reasonable predictions of the behavior of tank foundations is also discussed

    Domain structure of epitaxial Co films with perpendicular anisotropy

    Epitaxial hcp Cobalt films with pronounced c-axis texture have been prepared by pulsed lased deposition (PLD) either directly onto Al2O3 (0001) single crystal substrates or with an intermediate Ruthenium buffer layer. The crystal structure and epitaxial growth relation was studied by XRD, pole figure measurements and reciprocal space mapping. Detailed VSM analysis shows that the perpendicular anisotropy of these highly textured Co films reaches the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of hcp-Co single crystal material. Films were prepared with thickness t of 20 nm < t < 100 nm to study the crossover from in-plane magnetization to out-of-plane magnetization in detail. The analysis of the periodic domain pattern observed by magnetic force microscopy allows to determine the critical minimum thickness below which the domains adopt a pure in-plane orientation. Above the critical thickness the width of the stripe domains is evaluated as a function of the film thickness and compared with domain theory. Especially the discrepancies at smallest film thicknesses show that the system is in an intermediate state between in-plane and out-of-plane domains, which is not described by existing analytical domain models

    Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism and Domain Wall Effects in Epitaxial Fe and Co Structures with Stripe Domains

    We review our recent magnetotransport and micromagnetic studies of lithographically defined epitaxial thin film structures of bcc Fe and hcp Co with stripe domains. Micromagnetic structure and resistivity anisotropy are shown to be the predominant sources of low field magnetoresistance (MR) in these microstructures, with domain wall (DW) effects smaller but observable (DW-MR 1\lesssim 1 %). In Fe, at low temperature, in a regime in which fields have a significant effect on electron trajectories, a novel negative DW contribution to the resistivity is observed. In hcp Co microstructures, temperature dependent transport measurements for current perpendicular and parallel to walls show that any additional resistivity due to DW scattering is very small.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Journal of Applied Physics 199

    Frustration Driven Stripe Domain Formation in Co/Pt Multilayer Films

    We report microscopic mechanisms for an unusual magnetization reversal behavior in Co/Pt multilayers where some of the first-order reversal curves protrude outside of the major loop. Transmission x-ray microscopy reveals a fragmented stripe domain topography when the magnetic field is reversed prior to saturation, in contrast to an interconnected pattern when reversing from a saturated state. The different domain nucleation and propagation behaviors are due to unannihilated domains from the prior field sweep. These residual domains contribute to random dipole fields that impede the subsequent domain growth and prevent domains from growing as closely together as for the interconnected pattern.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, to appear in AP

    Domain wall structure in magnetic bilayers with perpendicular anisotropy

    We study the magnetic domain wall structure in magnetic bilayers (two ultrathin ferromagnetic layers separated by a non magnetic spacer) with perpendicular magnetization. Combining magnetic force and ballistic electron emission microscopies, we are able to reveal the details of the magnetic structure of the wall with a high spatial accuracy. In these layers, we show that the classical Bloch wall observed in single layers transforms into superposed N\'eel walls due to the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic layers.     Correlation between magnetic interactions and domain structure in A1 FePt ferromagnetic thin films

    We have investigated the relationship between the domain structure and the magnetic interactions in a series of FePt ferromagnetic thin films of varying thickness. As-made films grow in the magnetically soft and chemically disordered A1 phase that may have two distinct domain structures. Above a critical thickness dcr30d_{cr}\sim 30 nm the presence of an out of plane anisotropy induces the formation of stripes, while for d<dcrd<d_{cr} planar domains occur. Magnetic interactions have been characterized using the well known DCD-IRM remanence protocols, δM\delta M plots, and magnetic viscosity measurements. We have observed a strong correlation between the domain configuration and the sign of the magnetic interactions. Planar domains are associated with positive exchange-like interactions, while stripe domains have a strong negative dipolar-like contribution. In this last case we have found a close correlation between the interaction parameter and the surface dipolar energy of the stripe domain structure. Using time dependent magnetic viscosity measurements, we have also estimated an average activation volume for magnetic reversal, Vac1.37×104\langle V_{ac}\rangle \sim 1.37\times 10^{4} nm3,^{3}, which is approximately independent of the film thickness or the stripe period.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure

    Metformin:A Narrative Review of Its Potential Benefits for Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer and Dementia

    The biguanide metformin has been used as first-line therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treatment for several decades. In addition to its glucose-lowering properties and its prevention of weight gain, the landmark UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) demonstrated cardioprotective properties in obese T2DM patients. Coupled with a favorable side effect profile and low cost, metformin has become the cornerstone in the treatment of T2DM worldwide. In addition, metformin is increasingly being investigated for its potential anticancer and neuroprotective properties both in T2DM patients and non-diabetic individuals. In the meantime, new drugs with powerful cardioprotective properties have been introduced and compete with metformin for its place in the treatment of T2DM. In this review we will discuss actual insights in the various working mechanisms of metformin and the evidence for its beneficial effects on (the prevention of) cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. In addition to observational evidence, emphasis is placed on randomized trials and recent meta-analyses to obtain an up-to-date overview of the use of metformin in clinical practice

    Thermodynamics of Polydomain Ferroelectric Bilayers and Graded Multilayers

    The equilibrium domain structure and its evolution under an electric field in ferroelectric bilayers and graded multilayers are considered. The equilibrium bilayer is self-poled and contains a single-domain and a polydomain (with 180 domains) layers. The polarization of a graded multilayer proceeds by movement of wedge-like domains as a result of progressive transformation of polydomain layers to a single-domain state. The theory provides the principal explanation of peculiarities of dielectric behavior of graded ferroelectric films and can be applied to graded ferromagnetics and ferroelastics.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    At the end of the 1920's the opinion was current that livestock in the Netherlands were being fed too freely, so that there was a significant waste of fodder, animal production too dear.The study showed that according to the number of livestock and their production, and the amount of feedstuff exported and imported, there was only a slight waste or none at all. Kooy looked for reasons for the currency of the opinion and for the contrary result of the calculation. He examined 4 questions: whether production of feedstuffs within the Netherlands should be higher than statistics reported; whether livestock production in the Netherlands should be lower than the statistics said; whether feeding standards for the livestock should be too high; and whether the nutritive value of the feeding should be judged too low.The study demonstrated that losses in storage and in the course of supply were too little appreciated and that feeding was uneven from one season of the year to another
