Using NLP technology in CALL
This paper outlines the research and guiding research principles of the (I)CALL group at Dublin City University, Ireland. Our research activities include the development of (I)CALL systems targeted at a variety of user groups including advanced Romance language learners, intermediate to advanced German learners, primary and secondary school students as well as students with L1 learning disabilities requiring a variety of system types which cater to individual user needs and abilities. Suitable CL/NLP technology is incorporated where appropriate for the learner
Polaron cross-overs and d-wave superconductivity in Hubbard-Holstein model
We present a theoretical study of superconductivity of polarons in the
Hubbard-Holstein model. A residual kinematic interaction proportional to the
square of the polaron hopping energy between polarons and phonons provides a
pairing field for the polarons. We find that superconducting instability in the
d-wave channel is possible with small transition temperatures which is maximum
in the large to small polaron cross-over region. An s-wave instability is found
to be not possible when the effective on-site interaction between polarons is
repulsive
DMRG analysis of the SDW-CDW crossover region in the 1D half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model
In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a spin-density-wave
(SDW) Mott insulator to a charge-density-wave (CDW) Peierls insulator in
one-dimensional (1D) systems, we investigate the Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian
at half filling within a density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) approach.
Determining the spin and charge correlation exponents, the momentum
distribution function, and various excitation gaps, we confirm that an
intervening metallic phase expands the SDW-CDW transition in the weak-coupling

Patterning of ultrathin YBCO nanowires using a new focused-ion-beam process
Manufacturing superconducting circuits out of ultrathin films is a
challenging task when it comes to patterning complex compounds, which are
likely to be deteriorated by the patterning process. With the purpose of
developing high-T superconducting photon detectors, we designed a novel
route to pattern ultrathin YBCO films down to the nanometric scale. We believe
that our method, based on a specific use of a focused-ion beam, consists in
locally implanting Ga^{3+} ions and/or defects instead of etching the film.
This protocol could be of interest to engineer high-T superconducting
devices (SQUIDS, SIS/SIN junctions and Josephson junctions), as well as to

Detection of pediatric upper extremity motor activity and deficits with accelerometry
Importance: Affordable, quantitative methods to screen children for developmental delays are needed. Motor milestones can be an indicator of developmental delay and may be used to track developmental progress. Accelerometry offers a way to gather real-world information about pediatric motor behavior.
Objective: To develop a referent cohort of pediatric accelerometry from bilateral upper extremities (UEs) and determine whether movement can accurately distinguish those with and without motor deficits.
Design, Setting, and Participants: Children aged 0 to 17 years participated in a prospective cohort from December 8, 2014, to December 29, 2017. Children were recruited from Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Maryland Heights, Missouri, and Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, St Louis, Missouri. Typically developing children were included as a referent cohort if they had no history of motor or neurological deficit; consecutive sampling and matching ensured equal representation of sex and age. Children with diagnosed asymmetric motor deficits were included in the motor impaired cohort.
Exposures: Bilateral UE motor activity was measured using wrist-worn accelerometers for a total of 100 hours in 25-hour increments.
Main Outcomes and Measures: To characterize bilateral UE motor activity in a referent cohort for the purpose of detecting irregularities in the future, total activity and the use ratio between UEs were used to describe typically developing children. Asymmetric impairment was classified using the mono-arm use index (MAUI) and bilateral-arm use index (BAUI) to quantify the acceleration of unilateral movements.
Results: A total of 216 children enrolled, and 185 children were included in analysis. Of these, 156 were typically developing, with mean (SD) age 9.1 (5.1) years and 81 boys (52.0%). There were 29 children in the motor impaired cohort, with mean (SD) age 7.4 (4.4) years and 16 boys (55.2%). The combined MAUI and BAUI (mean [SD], 0.86 [0.005] and use ratio (mean [SD], 0.90 [0.008]) had similar F1 values. The area under the curve was also similar between the combined MAUI and BAUI (mean [SD], 0.98 [0.004]) and the use ratio (mean [SD], 0.98 [0.004]).
Conclusions and Relevance: Bilateral UE movement as measured with accelerometry may provide a meaningful metric of real-world motor behavior across childhood. Screening in early childhood remains a challenge; MAUI may provide an effective method for clinicians to measure and visualize real-world motor behavior in children at risk for asymmetrical deficits
Two Decades of Huntington Disease Testing: Patient’s Demographics and Reproductive Choices
Predictive testing for Huntington disease (HD) has been available in the United States (US) since 1987, and the Indiana University Predictive Testing Program has been providing this testing since 1990. To date there has been no published description of those who present for such testing in the US. Here we describe demographics of 141 individuals and reproductive decision making of a subset of 16 of those individuals who underwent predictive HD testing between 1990 and 2010 at one site in the US. This study is a retrospective chart review of the “Personal History Questionnaire” participants completed prior to testing. As seen in other studies, most participants were female (64.5 %), in their mid-30s (mean = 34), and had at least one child prior to testing (54 %). Multiple demographic datum points are described, and the reproductive decision making of these at-risk individuals was analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Tests. Of those women who had children before learning of their risk to inherit HD, those who attended church more frequently, had three or more children total, or whose mother was affected with HD were more likely to be comfortable with their choice to have children. We conclude that these demographic factors influence the reproductive decision-making of individuals at risk for HD. Psychologists, clinical geneticists, and genetic counselors may be able to use this information to help counsel at-risk patients regarding current or past reproductive decision making
Observation of shock waves in a large Bose-Einstein condensate
We observe the formation of shock waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate
containing a large number of sodium atoms. The shock wave is initiated with a
repulsive, blue-detuned light barrier, intersecting the BEC, after which two
shock fronts appear. We observe breaking of these waves when the size of these
waves approaches the healing length of the condensate. At this time, the wave
front splits into two parts and clear fringes appear. The experiment is modeled
using an effective 1D Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation and gives excellent
quantitative agreement with the experiment, even though matter waves with
wavelengths two orders of magnitude smaller than the healing length are
present. In these experiments, no significant heating or particle loss is
