    Get PDF
This paper examines the idea of the financial sector as a catalyst for a more sustainable development. It discusses the specific role of financial institutions fostering and facilitating more sustainable business practices. In order to understand how financial intermediaries can address sustainability issues in their core business, a comprehensive analysis of the reputational risk management at Commerzbank AG has been conducted. Based on this analysis the paper identifies key elements for sound ESG risk management and introduces recommendations to the processes at Commerzbank. The research is following a qualitative approach based on expert interviews and a comprehensive literature review

Romantic Miscalculations On Dating Applications: Definitions And Experiences Of Mobile Dating Micro-Rejection

    Get PDF
Millions of emerging adults use mobile dating applications (MDAs) daily in their efforts to find a romantic partner. However, the processes these daters use to interpret and react to rejection have received little attention. Not every attempt to develop a relationship can be successful. As daters evaluate profiles on these apps and interact with potential partners, they may miscalculate their perceptions of compatibility hand encounter rejection. Within MDAs, rejection could be a passive or active declaration by an individual signifying they do not want to initiate or escalate a potential relationship. These various forms of rejection are conceptualized in this project as micro-rejections. This project uses qualitative methods to explore how heterosexual emerging adult mobile daters define and experience these speech acts in their attempts to develop relationships. After interviewing 41 daters, I identified differences in the way mobile daters classify and process rejection within their mobile dating interactions. These differences were influenced by a dater’s perceptions of affordances within dating applications and the emotional impact of micro-rejections within these spaces

Exploring the Relationship between Interest in Higher Education and 12th Grade Mathematics NAEP Scores

This study presented a secondary analysis of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) dataset. The paper examined if a gap exists between the mathematics scores of 12th-grade public school students who have different levels of interest in higher education. - This study used a quantitative descriptive research design to analyze data from the 2013, 2015, and 2019 NAEP data sets. The findings include (1) the average mathematics scale score of students who complete college entrance exams, ACT/SAT, is higher than those who do not complete these exams. (2) The average mathematics scale score of students who complete the FAFSA is higher than those who do not complete the FAFSA. (3) Students who applied to four-year colleges performed significantly higher on the 12th-grade mathematics NAEP than those who did not. (4) Students who applied to two-year colleges performed significantly lower on the 12th-grade mathematics NAEP than those who did not. (5) Students who perceived a future benefit to mathematics scored higher on the mathematics NAEP. These findings indicate that students who are interested in higher education, particularly four-year education, do have higher 12th NAEP mathematics scores. These findings may provide insight into college preparation and guidance at the high school level

    Modern Arcana

    Get PDF
Modern Arcana is a collection of eleven short stories, totaling 124 pages, and was written in pursuit of a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. This collection was written through multiple stages of planning and revising work in response to the feedback of peers and instructors. Through writing this thesis, I explored my own relationship to the craft of creative writing and composition, as well as the familiarized myself with the current work being published in my field and genre. This collection is made unique through the sharing magical elements between pieces and the themes of agency in relation to destiny explored throughout the collection that are also inherent in the practice of interpreting the tarot. The many narrators of this collection navigate issues of family, friendship, responsibility, isolation, and the level agency with which they move forward in their multitude of possible futures

A Flexible Online Framework for Projection-Based STFT Phase Retrieval

Several recent contributions in the field of iterative STFT phase retrieval have demonstrated that the performance of the classical Griffin-Lim method can be considerably improved upon. By using the same projection operators as Griffin-Lim, but combining them in innovative ways, these approaches achieve better results in terms of both reconstruction quality and required number of iterations, while retaining a similar computational complexity per iteration. However, like Griffin-Lim, these algorithms operate in an offline manner and thus require an entire spectrogram as input, which is an unrealistic requirement for many real-world speech communication applications. We propose to extend RTISI -- an existing online (frame-by-frame) variant of the Griffin-Lim algorithm -- into a flexible framework that enables straightforward online implementation of any algorithm based on iterative projections. We further employ this framework to implement online variants of the fast Griffin-Lim algorithm, the accelerated Griffin-Lim algorithm, and two algorithms from the optics domain. Evaluation results on speech signals show that, similarly to the offline case, these algorithms can achieve a considerable performance gain compared to RTISI.Comment: Submitted to ICASSP 2

Risk Factors and Prognosis in T-Cell Posttransplantation Lymphoproliferative Diseases: Reevaluation of 163 Cases

Background. Posttransplantation lymphoproliferative diseases (PTLD) are mainly Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated disorders of B-cell origin. Due to the rarity of monomorphic T-cell PTLD (T-PTLD), knowledge about pathogenesis, risk factors, therapy, and prognosis relies predominantly on case reports and small series. Therefore, we aimed to provide an overview and a retrospective analysis of this rare PTLD subtype. Methods. We analyzed all available articles on T-PTLD in the PubMed database as well as in our own databases (Institute of Pathology/Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, Hannover Medical School) from 1988 to 2010. Reevaluated parameters were gender, age, transplanted organ, immunosuppressant regimen, time between transplantation and T-PTLD manifestation, T-PTLD subtype, virus positivity, localization, therapy, and follow-up. Results. A total of 163 cases were evaluated. We found that hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was associated with early-onset T-PTLD, whereas late onset occurred after immunosuppression with steroids and azathioprine without administration of calcineurin inhibitors. The major independent favorable prognostic factors were T-PTLD of the large granular lymphocytic leukemia subtype, young age, and a combination of radiotherapy/radiochemotherapy and reduced immunosuppression, whereas the hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma subtype and cases with involvement of bone marrow, the central nervous system, or graft had an adverse prognosis. Conclusion. T-PTLD is a heterogeneous group of different aberrant T-cell proliferations and represents a significant complication following transplantation, showing a uniformly poor prognosis
