    Aging phenomena in polystyrene thin films

    The aging behavior is investigated for thin films of atactic polystyrene through measurements of complex electric capacitance. During isothermal aging process the real part of the electric capacitance increases with aging time, while the imaginary part decreases with aging time. This result suggests that the aging time dependence of the real and imaginary parts are mainly associated with change in thickness and dielectric permittivity, respectively. In thin films, the thickness depends on thermal history of aging even above the glass transition. Memory and `rejuvenation' effects are also observed in the thin films.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    The impact of privatization in Japanese public libraries

    The management of public libraries in Japan faced a big change in 2003. Public institutions had been privatized in the world from the 1970s, but privatization of public institutions was late in Japan. Public institutions came to be privatized in Japan in the 1980s, and the public library finally became a target of the privatization in the 2000s. The numbers of libraries which introduced the privatization increases year by year. Research in the arena of library information science had been accomplished about arguments of privatization in Japanese public libraries. However, most of studies were sets of opinions to object to privatization. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine opinions of various stakeholders about privatization of public libraries by content analysis. The authors succeeded in collecting opinions of stakeholders from newspapers. They clarified characteristics of privatization and present arguments in Japan

    Transcriptional Regulation of Differentiation and Functions of Effector T Regulatory Cells

    Foxp3-expressing regulatory T (Treg) cells can suppress the activity of various types of immune cells and play key roles in the maintenance of self-tolerance and in the regulation of immune responses against pathogens and tumor cells. Treg cells consist of heterogeneous subsets that have distinct phenotypes and functions. Upon antigen stimulation, naive-like thymus-derived Treg cells, which circulate in secondary lymphoid organs, can differentiate into effector Treg (eTreg) cells and migrate to and control immune homeostasis of peripheral tissues. eTreg cells are heterogeneous in terms of their ability to localize to specific tissues and suppress particular types of immune responses. Differentiation and function of diverse eTreg subsets are regulated by a variety of transcription factors that are activated by antigens and cytokines.     Glassy dynamics in thin films of polystyrene

    Glassy dynamics was investigated for thin films of atactic polystyrene by complex electric capacitance measurements using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. During the isothermal aging process the real part of the electric capacitance increased with time, whereas the imaginary part decreased with time. It follows that the aging time dependences of real and imaginary parts of the electric capacitance were primarily associated with change in volume (film thickness) and dielectric permittivity, respectively. Further, dielectric permittivity showed memory and rejuvenation effects in a similar manner to those observed for poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films.     A 100 W-Class Water-Vapor Hall Thruster for Constellations and Space Explorations by SmallSats

    The laboratory models of a water-vapor Hall thruster and LaB6 thermionic cathode were developed and tested. To optimize the thruster design to water-vapor propellant, the geometrical investigation was conducted. After testing six different models, the smallest thruster, with an outer diameter of 20 mm, was found to be the most suitable for 100-W class operation. This thruster was able to be operated less than 100 W at 200 V. In addition, the discharge power was suppressed to 200 W even at 300 V. Based on the plume diagnostics, the thrust force of 2.9 mN, specific impulse of 650 s, and anode efficiency of 4.6 % were obtained as a representative performance of this 300 V operating point. After the thruster operation was achieved, the cathode coupling test was conducted to demonstrate electron emission under water-vapor plasma existence. As a result of this experiment, the effective increase in electron current compared to the previous stand-alone tests was confirmed as well as the compatability to the water-vapor plasma plume. On the other hand, the electron emission current has not achieved 100 mA-class yet and the required heating power was predicted over 100 W; thus, further improvement is progressing

Because chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) induces VCI, we used bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) mice as a CCH-induced VCI model. Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), the most redox-sensitive TRP channel, is functionally expressed in the brain. Here, we investigated the pathophysiological role of TRPA1 in CCH-induced VCI. During early-stage CCH, cognitive impairment and white matter injury were induced by BCAS in TRPA1-knockout but not wild-type mice. TRPA1 stimulation with cinnamaldehyde ameliorated BCAS-induced outcomes. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that BCAS increased leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) in astrocytes. Moreover, hydrogen peroxide-treated TRPA1-stimulated primary astrocyte cultures expressed LIF, and culture medium derived from these cells promoted oligodendrocyte precursor cell myelination. Overall, TRPA1 in astrocytes prevents CCH-induced VCI through LIF production. Therefore, TRPA1 stimulation may be a promising therapeutic approach for VCI

    JunB regulates homeostasis and suppressive functions of effector regulatory T cells

    Foxp3-expressing CD4(+) regulatory T (Treg) cells need to differentiate into effector Treg (eTreg) cells to maintain immune homeostasis. T-cell receptor (TCR)-dependent induction of the transcription factor IRF4 is essential for eTreg differentiation, but how IRF4 activity is regulated in Treg cells is still unclear. Here we show that the AP-1 transcription factor, JunB, is expressed in eTreg cells and promotes an IRF4-dependent transcription program. Mice lacking JunB in Treg cells develop multi-organ autoimmunity, concomitant with aberrant activation of T helper cells. JunB promotes expression of Treg effector molecules, such as ICOS and CTLA4, in BATF-dependent and BATF-independent manners, and is also required for homeostasis and suppressive functions of eTreg. Mechanistically, JunB facilitates the accumulation of IRF4 at a subset of IRF4 target sites, including those located near Icos and Ctla4. Thus, JunB is a critical regulator of IRF4-dependent Treg effector programs, highlighting important functions for AP-1 in Treg-mediated immune homeostasis

Leptospira isolates from 1 patient and 5 of 10 squirrels at the company were genetically and serologically identical and were identified as Leptospira kirschneri
