Over the course of the half-year from the battle of Jutland to the end of 1916, Williams S. Sims and his associates set the course that led to the U.S. Navy of the twenty-first century

Collisional stability of a three-component degenerate Fermi gas

We report on the creation of a degenerate Fermi gas consisting of a balanced mixture of atoms in three different hyperfine states of 6^6Li. This new system consists of three distinguishable Fermions with different and tunable interparticle scattering lengths a12a_{12}, a13a_{13} and a23a_{23}. We are able to prepare samples containing 5⋅1045 \cdot 10^4 atoms in each state at a temperature of about 215215 nK, which corresponds to T/TF≈0.37T/T_F \approx 0.37. We investigated the collisional stability of the gas for magnetic fields between 0 and 600 G and found a prominent loss feature at 130 G. From lifetime measurements we determined three-body loss coefficients, which vary over nearly three orders of magnitude

Minimally-destructive detection of magnetically-trapped atoms using frequency-synthesised light

We present a technique for atomic density measurements by the off-resonant phase-shift induced on a two-frequency, coherently-synthesised light beam. We have used this scheme to measure the column density of a magnetically trapped atom cloud and to monitor oscillations of the cloud in real time by making over a hundred non-destructive local density measurments. For measurements using pulses of 10,000-100,000 photons lasting ~10 microsecond, the precision is limited by statistics of the photons and the photodiode avalanche. We explore the relationship between measurement precision and the unwanted loss of atoms from the trap and introduce a figure of merit that characterises it. This method can be used to probe the density of a BEC with minimal disturbance of its phase.Comment: Submitted to New Journal of Physic

Validation of the Kohnen Restless Legs Syndrome-Quality of Life instrument

Background: Due to the symptoms and the sleep disturbances it causes, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) has a negative impact on quality of life. Measurement of such impact can be performed by means of questionnaires, such as the Kohnen Restless Legs Syndrome-Quality of Life questionnaire (KRLS-QoL), a specific 12-item instrument that is self-applied by patients. The present study is aimed at performing a first formal validation study of this instrument. Methods: Eight hundred ninety-one patients were included for analysis. RLS severity was assessed by the International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS), Restless Legs Syndrome-6 scales (RLS-6), and Clinical Global Impression of Severity. In addition the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was assessed. Acceptability, dimensionality, scaling assumptions, reliability, precision, hypotheses-related validity, and responsiveness were tested. Results: There were missing data in 3.58% patients. Floor and ceiling effects were low for the subscales, global evaluation, and summary index derived from items 1 to 11 after checking that scaling assumptions were met. Exploratory parallel factor analysis showed that the KRLS-QoL may be deemed unidimensional, ie, that all components of the scale are part of one overall general quality of life factor. Indexes of internal consistency (alpha = 0.88), item-total correlation (rS = 0.32-0.71), item homogeneity coefficient (0.41), and scale stability (ICC = 0.73) demonstrated a satisfactory reliability of the KRLS-QoL. Moderate or high correlations were obtained between KRLS-QoL scores and the IRLS, some components of the RLS-6, inter-KRLS-QoL domains, and global evaluations. Known-groups validity for severity levels grouping and responsiveness analysis results were satisfactory, the latter showing higher magnitudes of response for treated than for placebo arms. Conclusions: The KRLS-QoL was proven an acceptable, reliable, valid, and responsive measure to assess the impact of the RLS on quality of life.S

Rating of daytime and nighttime symptoms in RLS: validation of the RLS-6 scale of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease

Background: The International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS) is the most widely used of the scales rating the severity of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED). It has been well validated and is the primary end point for most of the therapeutic and nontherapeutic studies of RLS/WED. It has excellent psychometric properties, although it does not capture the severity of RLS under a wide variety of circumstances and times of day. Moreover, the IRLS has a large placebo effect. Methods: The Restless Legs Syndrome-6 Scale (RLS-6), however, takes another potentially valuable approach. Six items are rated on a 0-10 scale from no symptoms at 0 to very severe at 10. In addition to questions on satisfaction with sleep and sleepiness, the scale rates the severity of RLS for the past week under four separate circumstances: while falling asleep, during the night, during the day while sitting or lying, and during the day when moving around. The purpose of the current study is to report the validation of the RLS-6 under baseline and therapeutic conditions. Results: The RLS-6 seems to be an acceptable, reliable, precise, valid, and responsive instrument for the assessment of RLS severity in a specific and pragmatic manner. Conclusions: At present, we view the RLS-6 not as a replacement for the IRLS but as a supplement, as each scale provides information not captured by the other.S

Averages of Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms and representation of binary quadratic forms by quadratic forms in four variables

Let −d-d be a a negative discriminant and let TT vary over a set of representatives of the integral equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant −d-d. We prove an asymptotic formula for d→∞d \to \infty for the average over TT of the number of representations of TT by an integral positive definite quaternary quadratic form and obtain results on averages of Fourier coefficients of linear combinations of Siegel theta series. We also find an asymptotic bound from below on the number of binary forms of fixed discriminant −d-d which are represented by a given quaternary form. In particular, we can show that for growing dd a positive proportion of the binary quadratic forms of discriminant −d-d is represented by the given quaternary quadratic form.Comment: v5: Some typos correcte

    An integrated atom-photon junction

Photonic chips that integrate guides, switches, gratings and other components, process vast amounts of information rapidly on a single device. A new branch of this technology becomes possible if the light is coupled to cold atoms in a junction of small enough cross section, so that small numbers of photons interact appreciably with the atoms. Cold atoms are among the most sensitive of metrological tools and their quantum nature also provides a basis for new information processing methods. Here we demonstrate a photonic chip which provides multiple microscopic junctions between atoms and photons. We use the absorption of light at a junction to reveal the presence of one atom on average. Conversely, we use the atoms to probe the intensity and polarisation of the light. Our device paves the way for a new type of chip with interconnected circuits of atoms and photons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure. Submitted to Nature Photonic
