    Iron-catalyzed depolymerizations of end-of-life silicones with fatty alcohols

    During the last decades, polymers became one of the major materials in our society and a future without polymers is hardly imaginable. However, as negative issue of this success enormous amount of end-of-life materials are accumulated, which are mainly treated by landfill storage, thermal recycling or down-cycling. On the other hand, feedstock recycling can be an interesting option to convert end-of-life polymers to high quality polymers, via depolymerization reactions to low-molecular weight building blocks and subsequent transformation via polymerization reactions. In this regard, we present herein the depolymerization of polysiloxanes (silicones) applying fatty alcohols as depolymerization reagents. In more detail, in the presence of catalytic amounts of simple iron salts, low-molecular weight products with the motif R(OSiMe2)mOR (R = alkyl, m = 1-2) were attained. Remarkably, the reaction of R(OSiMe2)mOR with water showed the formation of new cyclic siloxanes, which are useful starting materials for long-chain silicones, and the corresponding fatty alcohol as side product, which can be directly reused in subsequent depolymerization reactions. Importantly, a recycling of the silicones and a straightforward recycling of the depolymerization reagent are feasible. © 2015 Tomsk Polytechnic University. Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.     The Effects of 5-Hydroxytryptophan in Combination with Different Fatty Acids on Gastrointestinal Functions: A Pilot Experiment

    Background. Fat affects gastric emptying (GE). 5-Hydroxythryptophan (5-HTP) is involved in central and peripheral satiety mechanisms. Influence of 5-HTP in addition to saturated or monounsaturated fatty acids (FA) on GE and hormone release was investigated. Subjects/Methods. 24 healthy individuals (12f : 12m, 22-29 years, BMI 19-25.7 kg/m(2)) were tested on 4 days with either 5-HTP + short-chain saturated FA (butter), placebo + butter, 5-HTP + monounsaturated FA (olive oil), or placebo + olive oil in double-blinded randomized order. Two hours after FA/5-HTP or placebo intake, a C-13 octanoid acid test was conducted. Cortisol, serotonin, cholecystokinin (CCK), and ghrelin were measured, as were mood and GE. Results. GE was delayed with butter and was normal with olive (P < 0.05) but not affected by 5-HTP. 5-HTP supplementation did not affect serotonin levels. Food intake increased plasma CCK (F = 6.136; P < 0.05) irrespective of the FA. Ghrelin levels significantly decreased with oil/5-HTP (F = 9.166; P < 0.001). The diurnal cortisol profile was unaffected by FA or 5-HTP, as were ratings of mood, hunger, and stool urgency. Conclusion. Diverse FAs have different effects on GE and secretion of orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones. Supplementation of 5-HTP had no effect on plasma serotonin and central functions.     Autonomic and circulatory alterations persist despite adequate resuscitation in a 5-day sepsis swine experiment.

    Autonomic and vascular failures are common phenotypes of sepsis, typically characterized by tachycardia despite corrected hypotension/hypovolemia, vasopressor resistance, increased arterial stiffness and decreased peripheral vascular resistance. In a 5-day swine experiment of polymicrobial sepsis we aimed at characterizing arterial properties and autonomic mechanisms responsible for cardiovascular homeostasis regulation, with the final goal to verify whether the resuscitation therapy in agreement with standard guidelines was successful in restoring a physiological condition of hemodynamic profile, cardiovascular interactions and autonomic control. Twenty pigs were randomized to polymicrobial sepsis and protocol-based resuscitation or to prolonged mechanical ventilation and sedation without sepsis. The animals were studied at baseline, after sepsis development, and every 24 h during the 3-days resuscitation period. Beat-to-beat carotid blood pressure (BP), carotid blood flow, and central venous pressure were continuously recorded. The two-element Windkessel model was adopted to study carotid arterial compliance, systemic vascular resistance and characteristic time constant τ. Effective arterial elastance was calculated as a simple estimate of total arterial load. Cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and low frequency (LF) spectral power of diastolic BP were computed to assess autonomic activity. Sepsis induced significant vascular and autonomic alterations, manifested as increased arterial stiffness, decreased vascular resistance and τ constant, reduced BRS and LF power, higher arterial afterload and elevated heart rate in septic pigs compared to sham animals. This compromised condition was persistent until the end of the experiment, despite achievement of recommended resuscitation goals by administered vasopressors and fluids. Vascular and autonomic alterations persist 3 days after goal-directed resuscitation in a clinically relevant sepsis model. We hypothesize that the addition of these variables to standard clinical markers may better profile patients' response to treatment and this could drive a more tailored therapy which could have a potential impact on long-term outcomes

    The other ‘other’: Party responses to immigration in eastern Europe

    Eastern Europe has traditionally been a region of emigration, sending thousands of refugees and migrants to the more developed and democratic west. The recent democratization and rising affluence of some eastern European countries, however, make them increasingly attractive destinations of migrant workers, slowly but surely turning them into immigrant societies. This article addresses the responses of political parties to the issue of immigration and immigrant integration. Through large-N quantitative analyses of 11 eastern European countries using the Chapel Hill Expert Surveys, the 2009 European Election Study, the Database of Political Institutions and World Bank indicators, it analyzes the causes of immigration salience, as well as the reasons behind immigration and integration policy positions. The article argues that partisan and voter views on immigration in eastern Europe are guided by ideological views on ethnic minorities, which have been the traditional ‘out-groups’ in the region. Partisan positions on immigration and immigrant integration are consequently determined by underlying ideological principles concerning cultural openness and acceptance of ‘otherness’.     Environmental Fate of Chiral Pollutants – the Necessity of Considering Stereochemistry

    Many organic compounds regulated by environmental laws are chiral and are released into the environment as racemates. 3-Phenylbutanoic acid and mecoprop, two chiral pollutants, were enantioselectively degraded by pure cultures of microorganisms. This indicates the importance of assessing the environmental impact of stereoisomers separately, because selective enrichment of one of the enantiomers may occur in the environment. Field studies on the fate of highly polar, chiral compounds, like sulfophenylcarboxylates, are hampered by the lack of appropriate analytical methods for the separation of the enantiomers. Therefore, a method based on capillary electrophoresis with α-cyclodextrin as chiral selector was developed to separate the enantiomers of such compounds. In a field study at a Swiss waste disposal site, the fate of the chiral herbicide mecoprop was investigated. The enantiomeric ratio of (R)-mecoprop to (S)-mecoprop altered during groundwater passage of landfill leachate. This is a strong indication for in situ biodegradation. Our data imply that not only the enantiomers of a chiral drug or pesticide may exert different effects on the biological targets, but also their biodegradation and environmental fate may differ
