Travelling and sticky affects: : Exploring teens and sexualized cyberbullying through a Butlerian-Deleuzian- Guattarian lens
In this paper we combine the thinking of Deleuze and Guattari (1984, 1987) with Judith Butler’s (1990, 1993, 2004, 2009) work to follow the rhizomatic becomings of young people’s affective relations in a range of on- and off-line school spaces. In particular we explore how events that may be designated as sexual cyberbullying are constituted and how they are mediated by technology (such as texting or in/through social networking sites). Drawing on findings from two different studies looking at teens’ uses of and experiences with social networking sites, Arto in Denmark, and Bebo in the UK, we use this approach to think about how affects flow, are distributed, and become fixed in assemblages. We map how affects are manoeuvred and potentially disrupted by young people, suggesting that in the incidences discussed affects travel as well as stick in points of fixation. We argue that we need to grasp both affective flow and fixity in order to gain knowledge of how subjectification of the gendered/classed/racialised/sexualised body emerges. A Butlerian-Deleuzian-Guattarian frame helps us to map some of these affective complexities that shape sexualized cyberbully events; and to recognize technologically mediated lines of flight when subjectifications are at least temporarily disrupted and new terms of recognition and intelligibility staked out. Standard Model tests with trapped radioactive atoms
We review the use of laser cooling and trapping for Standard Model tests,
focusing on trapping of radioactive isotopes. Experiments with neutral atoms
trapped with modern laser cooling techniques are testing several basic
predictions of electroweak unification. For nuclear decay, demonstrated
trap techniques include neutrino momentum measurements from beta-recoil
coincidences, along with methods to produce highly polarized samples. These
techniques have set the best general constraints on non-Standard Model scalar
interactions in the first generation of particles. They also have the promise
to test whether parity symmetry is maximally violated, to search for tensor
interactions, and to search for new sources of time reversal violation. There
are also possibilites for exotic particle searches. Measurements of the
strength of the weak neutral current can be assisted by precision atomic
experiments using traps of small numbers of radioactive atoms, and sensitivity

Nuclear structure and reaction studies at SPIRAL
The SPIRAL facility at GANIL, operational since 2001, is described briefly.
The diverse physics program using the re-accelerated (1.2 to 25 MeV/u) beams
ranging from He to Kr and the instrumentation specially developed for their
exploitation are presented. Results of these studies, using both direct and
compound processes, addressing various questions related to the existence of
exotic states of nuclear matter, evolution of new "magic numbers", tunnelling
of exotic nuclei, neutron correlations, exotic pathways in astrophysical sites
and characterization of the continuum are discussed. The future prospects for
the facility and the path towards SPIRAL2, a next generation ISOL facility, are

suPAR as a prognostic biomarker in sepsis
Sepsis is the clinical syndrome derived from the host response to an infection and severe sepsis is the leading cause of death in critically ill patients. Several biomarkers have been tested for use in diagnosis and prognostication in patients with sepsis. Soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) levels are increased in various infectious diseases, in the blood and also in other tissues. However, the diagnostic value of suPAR in sepsis has not been well defined, especially compared to other more established biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT). On the other hand, suPAR levels have been shown to predict outcome in various kinds of bacteremia and recent data suggest they may have predictive value, similar to that of severity scores, in critically ill patients. This narrative review provides a descriptive overview of the clinical value of this biomarker in the diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic guidance of sepsis
Seeking treatment for symptomatic malaria in Papua New Guinea
Background: Malaria places a significant burden on the limited resources of many low income countries. Knowing more about why and where people seek treatment will enable policy makers to better allocate the limited resources. This study aims to better understand what influences treatment-seeking behaviour for malaria in one such low-income country context, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Methods: Two culturally, linguistically and demographically different regions in PNG were selected as study sites. A cross sectional household survey was undertaken in both sites resulting in the collection of data on 928 individuals who reported suffering from malaria in the previous four weeks. A probit model was then used to identify the factors determining whether or not people sought treatment for presumptive malaria. Multinomial logit models also assisted in identifying the factors that determined where people sought treatments. Results: Results in this study build upon findings from other studies. For example, while distance in PNG has previously been seen as the primary factor in influencing whether any sort of treatment will be sought, in this study cultural influences and whether it was the first, second or even third treatment for a particular episode of malaria were also important. In addition, although formal health care facilities were the most popular treatment sources, it was also found that traditional healers were a common choice. In turn, the reasons why participants chose a particular type of treatment differed according to the whether they were seeking an initial or subsequent treatments. Conclusions: Simply bringing health services closer to where people live may not always result in a greater use of formal health care facilities. Policy makers in PNG need to consider within-country variation in treatment-seeking behaviour, the important role of traditional healers and also ensure that the community fully understands the potential implications of not seeking treatment for illnesses such as malaria at a formal health care facility.Carol P Davy, Elisa Sicuri, Maria Ome, Ellie Lawrence-Wood, Peter Siba, Gordon Warvi, Ivo Mueller and Lesong Conte
Erytrocyte membrane anionic charge in type 2 diabetic patients with retinopathy
BACKGROUND: The Steno hypothesis states that changes in basement membrane anionic charge leads to diabetic microvascular complications. In diabetic nephropathy, loss of basement membrane glycosaminoglycans and the association between glomerular basement membrane heparan sulphate and proteinuria has been documented. A correlation between erythrocyte surface and the glomerular capillary wall charges has also been observed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between retinopathy and erythrocyte anionic charge and urinary glycosaminoglycan excretion in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS: 49 subjects (58 ± 7 yrs, M/F 27/22) with type 2 diabetes with proliferative retinopathy (n = 13), nonproliferative retinopathy (n = 13) and without retinopathy (n = 23) were included in the study. 38 healthy subjects were selected as control group (57 ± 5 yrs, M/F 19/19). Erythrocyte anionic charge (EAC) was determined by the binding of the cationic dye, alcian blue. Urinary glycosaminoglycan and microalbumin excretion were measured. RESULTS: EAC was significantly decreased in diabetic patients with retinopathy (255 ± 30 ng alcian blue/10(6 )RBC, 312 ± 30 ng alcian blue/10(6 )RBC for diabetic and control groups respectively, p < 0.001). We did not observe an association between urinary GAG and microalbumin excretion and diabetic retinopathy. EAC is found to be negatively corralated with microalbuminuria in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that type 2 diabetic patients with low erythrocyte anionic charge are associated with diabetic retinopathy. Reduction of negative charge of basement membranes may indicate general changes in microvasculature rather than retinopathy. More prospective and large studies needs to clarify the role of glycosaminoglycans on progression of retinopathy in type 2 diabetic patients
MR-proADM as a Prognostic Marker in Patients With ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction - DANAMI-3 (a Danish Study of Optimal Acute Treatment of Patients With STEMI) Substudy

) has demonstrated prognostic potential after myocardial infarction (
MI
). Yet, the prognostic value of
MR
‐pro
ADM
at admission has not been examined in patients with ST‐segment–elevation
MI
(
STEMI
).
Methods and Results
The aim of this substudy, DANAMI‐3 (The Danish Study of Optimal Acute Treatment of Patients with
ST
‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction), was to examine the associations of admission concentrations of
MR
‐pro
ADM
with short‐ and long‐term mortality and hospital admission for heart failure in patients with
ST
‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction. Outcomes were assessed using Cox proportional hazard models and area under the curve using receiver operating characteristics. In total, 1122 patients were included. The median concentration of
MR
‐pro
ADM
was 0.64 nmol/L (25th–75th percentiles, 0.53–0.79). Within 30 days 23 patients (2.0%) died and during a 3‐year follow‐up 80 (7.1%) died and 38 (3.4%) were admitted for heart failure. A doubling of
MR
‐pro
ADM
was, in adjusted models, associated with an increased risk of 30‐day mortality (hazard ratio, 2.67; 95% confidence interval, 1.01–7.11;
P
=0.049), long‐term mortality (hazard ratio, 3.23; 95% confidence interval, 1.97–5.29;
P
<0.0001), and heart failure (hazard ratio, 2.71; 95% confidence interval, 1.32–5.58;
P
=0.007). For 30‐day and 3‐year mortality, the area under the curve for
MR
‐pro
ADM
was 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. For 3‐year mortality, area under the curve (0.84) of the adjusted model marginally changed (0.85;
P
=0.02) after addition of
MR
‐pro
ADM
.
Conclusions
Elevation of admission
MR
‐pro
ADM
was associated with long‐term mortality and heart failure, whereas the association with short‐term mortality was borderline significant.
MR
‐pro
ADM
may be a marker of prognosis after ST‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction but does not seem to add substantial prognostic information to established clinical models.
