    Alismatales da bacia do alto e médio rio Araguaia (Brasil)

    The present study deals with a survey of the order Alismatales (except Araceae) in the upper and middle Araguaia River region located between the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás, Brazil. Field expeditions were carried out during the rainy and dry seasons. The route covered approximately 2,000 km and 41 aquatic environments were visited. Thirteen taxa, representing the families Alismataceae (nine), Hydrocharitaceae (three) and Najadaceae (one) were identified. Keys for the identification of families and species in field, brief diagnoses, schematic illustrations and relevant comments were elaborated based on field observations as well as on the analysis of the specimens collected.Realizou-se o levantamento de espécies da ordem Alismatales (exceto Araceae) ocorrentes na região do alto e médio rio Araguaia, entre os estados de Mato Grosso e Goiás, Brasil. As expedições para coleta de material, ocorridas tanto na época de chuvas quanto na seca, totalizaram cerca de 2.000 km percorridos, abrangendo 41 ambientes aquáticos. Foram identificados treze táxons pertencentes às famílias Alismataceae (nove), Hydrocharitaceae (três) e Najadaceae (uma). Foram elaboradas chaves para identificação em campo das famílias e espécies, descrições breves, ilustrações esquemáticas e comentários relevantes, baseados em dados levantados em campo e através da análise do material coletado.43945

    Improving Language Comprehension in the French Classroom: The Role of Active Learning Strategies

    Foreign language classes are all too often a practice in rote memorization exercises. Research has shown that rote exercises are not the most effective method for learning a foreign language or improving students’ reading comprehension. Active learning strategy research argues for having more hands-on, project-based opportunities that increase student learning outcomes. As a high school French student teacher, I sought to find ways to implement active learning strategies to aid students’ reading comprehension. This self-study was completed using a qualitative approach and included data from field notes, projects, student feedback, and student grades. The findings indicate that targeted active learning strategies such as games, activities, and projects, used in partnership with one another, did result in improved student performance on reading comprehension assessments. This study will add to the body of knowledge which promote active learning strategies and will hopefully encourage further research of these methods

    Un reciente análisis filogenético de cuatro regiones de ADN para ca. 354 especies de la subtribu Maxillariinae indican fuertemente que el género Maxillaria, en su circunscripción tradicional, es altamente polifilético. Presentamos una nueva clasificación filogenética para Maxillariinae que reconoce 17 géneros. Los cambios necesarios incluyen: 1) la resurrección de los géneros Camaridium, Heterotaxis, y Ornithidium; 2) el reconocimiento de los recientes segregados genéricos Brasiliorchis (=Maxillaria sección Repentes), Christensonella (=Maxillaria sección Urceolatae), Nitidobulbon (en prensa), y una Sauvetrea recircunscrita (=Maxillaria sección Trigonae); 3) la adopción de los nuevos géneros Inti (=Maxillaria sección Polyphyllae), Mapinguari, Maxillariella (=Maxillaria secciones Ebulbes y Erectae), y Rhetinantha; 4) transferencias de Maxillaria sección Reflexae a Ornithidium, y Maxillaria sección Rufescens a Mormolyca; y 5) puesta en sinonimia de los géneros Adamanthus, Pseudomaxillaria, Psittacoglossum y Sepalosaccus (bajo Camaridium), Anthosiphon (bajo Cryptocentrum), Chrysocycnis (bajo Mormolyca), Dicrypta, Marsupiaria y Pentulops (bajo Heterotaxis), y Laricorchis, Neo-Urbania, y Siagonanthus (bajo Ornithidium). Algunos sinónimos nuevos al nivel de especie también son presentados.A recent phylogenetic analysis of four DNA regions for ca. 354 species of core Maxillariinae strongly indicate that the genus Maxillaria, as traditionally circumscribed, is grossly polyphyletic. We present a new phylogenetic classification for core Maxillariinae that recognizes 17 genera. Necessary realignments include: 1) resurrection of the genera Camaridium, Heterotaxis, and Ornithidium; 2) recognition of the recent segregates Brasiliorchis (=Maxillaria sect. Repentes), Christensonella (=Maxillaria sect. Urceolatae), Nitidobulbon (in press), and a recircumscribed Sauvetrea (=Maxillaria sect. Trigonae); 3) adoption of the new genera Inti (=Maxillaria sect.     Preliminary molecular phylogenetics of Sobralia and relatives (Orchidaceae: Sobralieae)

    With over 200 species, the orchid tribe Sobralieae is a major constituent of the Neotropical flora. As currently circumscribed, the tribe includes four genera: Elleanthus, Epilyna, Sertifera, and Sobralia. Most species of these four genera typically produce long, cane-like stems but differ drastically in flower size and inflorescence structure. DNA sequence data support the monophyly of Elleanthus, Epilyna, and Sertifera but not Sobralia, which is a polyphyletic assemblage traditionally placed together due to relatively large flower size. Details of inflorescence structure provide characters that can easily distinguish the different clades of Sobralia. The misleading characteristic of flower size is probably due to at least several shifts in pollination syndrome within the tribe. With few exceptions, species of Sobralia predominantly offer no reward and are pollinated by bees. Elleanthus and Sertifera are small-flowered and mostly pollinated by hummingbirds with legitimate rewards. Nothing is known of pollination in Epilyna. Understanding the evolution of shifts in pollination syndrome will require more empirical observations of pollination within Sobralieae. In addition, increased taxon sampling and improved phylogenetic resolution are needed before generic realignments are made.Con más de 200 especies, la tribu de orquídeas Sobralieae es un componente importante de la riqueza florística de los neotrópicos. Actualmente esta tribu está constituída por cuatro géneros: Elleanthus, Epilyna, Sertifera, y Sobralia. Las plantas de éstos cuatro géneros generalmente producen tallos largos como cañas, pero difieren en forma drástica en el tamaño de la flor y la estructura de las inflorescencias. Datos de ADN apoyan la monofilia de Elleanthus, Epilyna, y Sertifera, pero no de Sobralia. Sobralia es un ensamblaje polifilético, tradicionalmente circunscrito por el gran tamaño de sus flores. Los detalles de la morfología floral y la posición de la inflorescencia proporcionan caracteres que fácilmente permiten distinguir los diferentes clados de Sobralia. El tamaño de la flor y ciertas otras características superficiales probablemente han sufrido cambios evolutivos en respuesta a cambios en el síndrome de polinización dentro de la tribu. La mayoría de las especies de Sobralia no ofrecen ninguna recompensa y son polinizadas por abejas en busca de néctar. Elleanthus y Sertifera tienen flores pequeñas que aparentemente son polinizadas por colibríes, en estos dos géneros las flores ofrecen néctar. No se conoce nada sobre la polinización de Epilyna.     Adult-Onset Leukoencephalopathy With Axonal Spheroids and Pigmented Glia: Review of Clinical Manifestations as Foundations for Therapeutic Development

    A comprehensive review of published literature was conducted to elucidate the genetics, neuropathology, imaging findings, prevalence, clinical course, diagnosis/clinical evaluation, potential biomarkers, and current and proposed treatments for adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP), a rare, debilitating, and life-threatening neurodegenerative disorder for which disease-modifying therapies are not currently available. Details on potential efficacy endpoints for future interventional clinical trials in patients with ALSP and data related to the burden of the disease on patients and caregivers were also reviewed. The information in this position paper lays a foundation to establish an effective clinical rationale and address the clinical gaps for creation of a robust strategy to develop therapeutic agents for ALSP, as well as design future clinical trials, that have clinically meaningful and convergent endpoints

    Abstract The first Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) Research Centers of Excellence (RCOE) Investigator’s meeting was held on December 14, 2017, in New Orleans. The program was established to increase patient access to clinical experts on Lewy body dementia (LBD), which includes dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), and to create a clinical trials-ready network. Four working groups (WG) were created to pursue the LBDA RCOE aims: (1) increase access to high-quality clinical care, (2) increase access to support for people living with LBD and their caregivers, (3) increase knowledge of LBD among medical and allied (or other) professionals, and (4) create infrastructure for a clinical trials-ready network as well as resources to advance the study of new therapeutics.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/148286/1/13195_2019_Article_476.pd

    Spatially structured genetic diversity of the Amerindian yam (Dioscorea trifida L.) assessed by SSR and ISSR markers in Southern Brazil

    Dioscorea trifida L. (Dioscoreaceae) is among the economically most important cultivated Amerindian yam species, whose origin and domestication are still unresolved issues. in order to estimate the genetic diversity maintained by traditional farmers in Brazil, 53 accessions of D. trifida from 11 municipalities in the states of São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso and Amazonas were characterized on the basis of eight Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) and 16 Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) markers. the level of polymorphism among the accessions was high, 95 % for SSR and 75.8 % for ISSR. the SSR marker showed higher discrimination power among accessions compared to ISSR, with D parameter values of 0.79 and 0.44, respectively. Although SSR and ISSR markers led to dendrograms with different topologies, both separated the accessions into three main groups: I-Ubatuba-SP; II-Iguape-SP and Santa Catarina; and III-Mato Grosso. the accessions from Amazonas State were classified in group II with SSR and in a separate group with ISSR. Bayesian and principal coordinate analyzes conducted with both molecular markers corroborated the classification into three main groups. Higher variation was found within groups in the AMOVA analysis for both markers (66.5 and 60.6 % for ISSR and SSR, respectively), and higher Shannon diversity index was found for group II with SSR. Significant but low correlations were found between genetic and geographic distances (r = 0.08; p = 0.0007 for SSR and r = 0.16; p = 0.0002 for ISSR).
