    Chemical constituents of the soft corals Sinularia vanderlandi and Sinularia gravis from the coast of Madagascar

    © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.The crude extracts of the Madagascan soft corals Sinularia vanderlandi and Sinularia gravis (Alcyoniidae) showed activity against Plasmodium falciparum which led us to study their chemical constituents. The new cadinane-type sesquiterpenoid vanderlandin (1) has been obtained from S. vanderlandi along with 24-methylenecholesterol (2). Four new compounds, the spatane-type diterpenoid gravilin (3), the monoalkylmonoacylglycerol 4, the dihomoditerpenoid ketone 5, and isodecaryiol (9), along with the three known compounds (+)-(S)-geranyllinalool (6), (-)-(R)-nephthenol (7), and 11,12-epoxysarcophytol A (8) have been isolated from the methanol extract of S. gravis. The structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic methods, in particular various 2D NMR techniques. The structure of isodecaryiol (9) including its absolute configuration could be confirmed by X-ray diffraction

    Development and Evaluation of Curcumin Loaded Nanoparticles for Treatment of Diabetes

    A nanometer is one billionth of a metre, hence nanotechnology is an intersection of science, engineering, and technology that works with structures and materials at the nanoscale scale, often in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers. Materials frequently display distinctive and innovative features at this scale that are distinct from those at the macroscopic or even microscopic levels. Nanotechnology is the manipulation, design, and control of materials and devices at the nanoscale to produce new products, technologies, and applications. Nanotechnology is essential to the development of tailored medication delivery systems, imaging agents, and diagnostic instruments in medicine. It offers the promise for more targeted treatments that are also less likely to cause negative effects. Since ancient times, turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) has been widely used as a spice and a remedy. Curcumin, a polyphenol that aids in the prevention and management of neurological, pulmonary, cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory, and autoimmune illnesses as well as some malignancies, is the primary active component of turmeric. Curcumin does have certain disadvantages, though, including limited water solubility, poor absorption, rapid metabolism, rapid systemic elimination, inadequate bioavailability subpar pharmacokinetics, low stability, and subpar penetration targeting effectiveness. A typical approach is to encapsulate curcumin in nanocarriers for targeted distribution to get over these disadvantages. Concerns have been raised about the degradation of nanocarrier products. In this study, curcumin nanoparticles and nanocurcumin were created without the aid of nanocarriers. To do this, raw turmeric rhizome was soxhlet extracted to obtain curcumin. The stock solutions of various curcumin concentrations made in dichloromethane were sonicated for varying lengths of time and included in boiling water at various flow rates. With 5.00 mg/mL of stock solution concentration, 0.10 mL/min flow rate, and 30 minutes of sonication, an average particle size of 82 04 nm was produced. Particle size seems to decline with sonication time but tends to increase with flow rate and curcumin content in the stock solution. Although nanocurcumins are amorphous, X-ray diffraction reveals crisp and powerful diffraction peaks for curcumin, suggesting its integrity and high crystallinity. The presence of all the functional groups of curcumin in nanocurcumin is confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra.     © The Royal Society of Chemistry.We investigated the three soft corals Sarcophyton stellatum, Capnella fungiformis and Lobophytum crassum and the sponge Pseudoceratina arabica, which have been collected at the coast of Madagascar. In addition to previously known marine natural products, S. stellatum provided the new (+)-enantiomer of the cembranoid (1E,3E,11E)-7,8-epoxycembra-1,3,11,15-tetraene (2). Capnella fungiformis afforded three new natural products, ethyl 5-[(1E,5Z)-2,6-dimethylocta-1,5,7-trienyl]furan-3-carboxylate (6), ethyl 5-[(1E,5E)-2,6-dimethylocta-1,5,7-trienyl]furan-3-carboxylate (7) and the diepoxyguaiane sesquiterpene oxyfungiformin (9a). The extracts of all three soft corals exhibited moderate activities against the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Extracts of the sponge Pseudoceratina arabica proved to be very active against a series of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

    Pro-Ana-Foren - berechtigt oder gefÀhrlich?

    Thema der Arbeit sind Pro-Ana-Foren. Die zentrale Frage lautet: Sind Pro-Ana-Foren gefĂ€hrlich und gehören verboten, oder haben sie ihre Berechtigung? Diese Fragen sollen anhand einer Online-Befragung geklĂ€rt werden. Ziel der Arbeit ist es die GefĂ€hrlichkeit, aber auch die möglichen positiven Aspekte der Foren einzuschĂ€tzen. Insgesamt betrachtet kann durch die Untersuchungsergebnisse fĂŒr gewisse, zu Beginn der Arbeit angenommene Gefahren, Entwarnung gegeben werden. Andere von den Foren ausgehende Gefahren mĂŒssen aber bestĂ€tigt werden. Da durch die Untersuchung jedoch gleichzeitig auch bedeutungsvolle positive Forenaspekte deutlich werden, erscheint ein gĂ€nzliches Verbot von Pro-Ana-Foren unangebracht. Stattdessen könnte es sinnvoll sein, bisherige BemĂŒhungen im Kampf gegen gefĂ€hrliche Pro-Ana-Angebote zu ergĂ€nzen. Mit den Untersuchungsergebnissen wird kein Anspruch auf ReprĂ€sentativitĂ€t erhoben
