Type specimens from the insect collections deposited in the Department of Entomology, National Museum, Prague, are currently being catalogued. In this part of the catalogue we deal with Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha. This group is namely represented in the museum by the whitefl y collection of Jiří Zahradník and the scale insect collections of Jiří Zahradník and Josef Řeháček, while the psyllid material was mostly collected by Jiří Dlabola and other workers of the department and identifi ed by Marianna M. Loginova, Daniel Burckhardt and Pavel Lauterer (material from the expeditions of the National Museum to Iran in 1970s is particularly numerous and scientifi cally valuable). We list the types of 36 taxa (3 in Aleyrodomorpha, 3 in Coccomorpha, and 30 in Psyllomorpha), including holotypes or syntypes of 14 taxa (3 in Aleyrodomorpha, 2 in Coccomorpha, and 9 in Psyllomorpha)

Článek se věnuje faunistice polokřídlého hmyzu v okolí města Přebuz v západních Krušných horách. V letech 2010-2014 jsme tam potvrdili výskyt 118 druhů ploštic, 107 druhů křísů a 21 druhů mer. (= Erzgebirge) in western Czech Republic. The area is remarkable for well-preserved peat bogs, transitional mires, heaths and montane meadows and the occurrence of many habitat specialists among the Hemiptera. Forty-six of the species recorded are listed on the Red List of threatened invertebrates of the Czech Republic. The most noteworthy are the records of Sigara scotti (Douglas et Scott, 1868) (Heteroptera: Corixidae), Javesella bottnica Huldén, 1974 (Auchenorrhyncha: Delphacidae), and Macrosteles fieberi (Edwards, 1889) (Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae) – these three species are currently known in the Czech Republic only from the Přebuz environs (for M. fieberi, we provide here first the confirmed records from the Czech Republic). The distribution and ecology of 61 species are briefly discussed in the paper and additional, hitherto unpublished records from other regions of the Czech Republic are supplied for some of them

Bizarre morphology in extinct Eocene bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Newly discovered fossil bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera:Pentatomidae) from the Eocene of Messel (Germany) andGreen River (North America) exhibit an exaggeratedmorphology including prominent spiny humeral andanterolateral angles of the pronotum and a spiny lateralabdominal margin. Especially the humeral angles are unique;they consist of expansive, rounded projections with strongspines, which is a rare trait among pentatomids. A hypothesisfor the function of this extreme morphology is defence againstsmall vertebrate predators, such as birds or reptiles. The sameprotuberances also produce a disruptive effect camouflagingthe specimen in its environment and provide additionalprotection. Therefore, the extreme morphology providesprimary as well as secondary anti-predator defence. Themorphology ofEospinosus peterkulkaigen. et sp. nov. andE. greenriverensissp. nov. resembles that of Triplatygini, whichtoday occur exclusively in Madagascar, as well as that ofDiscocephalinae or Cyrtocorinae, which today occur in theNeotropics. Due to a lack of conclusive characters, it cannot beexcluded that the fossil species may represent a case ofremarkable convergence and are not related to either taxon.Phylogenetic analyses using parsimony as well as Bayesianalgorithms confirmed that the new genus is a member ofPentatomidae, but could not solve its phylogenetic relationships within Pentatomidae

    Case 3724 – <i>Metochus abbreviatus</i> Scott, 1874 (Insecta, Heteroptera): proposed precedence over <i>Rhyparochromus erosus</i> Walker, 1872 (currently <i>Metochus erosus</i>)

The purpose of this application, under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the widely used specific name Metochus abbreviatus Scott, 1874, for a species of rhyparochromid bugs from East Asia. The name is threatened by the senior subjective synonym Rhyparochromus erosus Walker, 1872, which has seldom been used since its first publication. Therefore, precedence of the name Metochus abbreviatus Scott, 1874 over Rhyparochromus erosus Walker, 1872 is proposed.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Hematene: A sustainable 2D conductive platform for visible-light-driven photocatalytic ammonia decomposition

    Get PDF
The emerging class of 2D non-van der Waals (n-vdW) materials, including 2D iron oxides, possesses unique properties and high applicability, making them attractive for various technological applications. However, the synthesis of these materials through a scalable and eco-friendly method remains a challenge, as most known chemical exfoliation processes require toxic organic solvents. In this study, we report a green synthesis of 2D hematene (α-Fe2O3) using an ultrasound-supported exfoliation method of earth-abundant iron oxide ore in a pure aqueous solution. The resulting hematene sheets, only a few nanometers thick, exhibit superior electrochemical performance in terms of charge transfer processes, making them ideal for photocatalytic applications. By doping a conductive hematene substrate with ruthenium, we demonstrate a synergistic effect for generating electrons and holes under visible light irradiation. Using this approach, we successfully decomposed ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, highlighting the potential of this novel class of environmentally-friendly photocatalysts for clean energy production. Overall, our water-assisted scalable synthesis of hematene offers a promising strategy for producing efficient and sustainable photocatalysts.Web of Science34art. no. 10188
