Microwave-to-terahertz dielectric resonators for liquid sensing in microfluidic systems
The microwave-to-terahertz frequency range offers unique opportunities for the sensing of liquids based on the degree of molecular orientational and electronic polarization, Debye relaxation due to intermolecular forces between (semi-)polar molecules and collective vibrational modes within complex molecules. Methods for the fast dielectric characterization of (sub-)nanolitre volumes of mostly aqueous liquids and biological cell suspensions are discussed, with emphasis on labon- chip approaches aimed towards single-cell detection and label-free flow cytometry at microwave-to-terahertz frequencies. Among the most promising approaches, photonic crystal defect cavities made from high-resistivity silicon are compared with metallic split-ring resonant systems and high quality factor (Q-factor) whispering gallery-type resonances in dielectric resonators. Applications range from accurate haemoglobin measurements on nanolitre samples to label-free detection of circulating tumor cells. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Shallow vs deep learning architectures for white matter lesion segmentation in the early stages of multiple sclerosis
In this work, we present a comparison of a shallow and a deep learning
architecture for the automated segmentation of white matter lesions in MR
images of multiple sclerosis patients. In particular, we train and test both
methods on early stage disease patients, to verify their performance in
challenging conditions, more similar to a clinical setting than what is
typically provided in multiple sclerosis segmentation challenges. Furthermore,
we evaluate a prototype naive combination of the two methods, which refines the
final segmentation. All methods were trained on 32 patients, and the evaluation
was performed on a pure test set of 73 cases. Results show low lesion-wise
false positives (30%) for the deep learning architecture, whereas the shallow
architecture yields the best Dice coefficient (63%) and volume difference
(19%). Combining both shallow and deep architectures further improves the
lesion-wise metrics (69% and 26% lesion-wise true and false positive rate,
respectively).Comment: Accepted to the MICCAI 2018 Brain Lesion (BrainLes) worksho
Microwave study of field-effect devices based on graphene/aluminum nitride/graphene structures
Metallic gate electrodes are often employed to control the conductivity of graphene based field effect devices. The lack of transparency of such electrodes in many optical applications is a key limiting factor. We demonstrate a working concept of a double layer graphene field effect device that utilizes a thin film of sputtered aluminum nitride as dielectric gate material. For this system, we show that the graphene resistance can be modified by a voltage between the two graphene layers. We study how a second gate voltage applied to the silicon back gate modifies the measured microwave transport data at around 8.7 GHz. As confirmed by numerical simulations based on the Boltzmann equation, this system resembles a parallel circuit of two graphene layers with different intrinsic doping levels. The obtained experimental results indicate that the graphene-aluminum nitride-graphene device concept presents a promising technology platform for terahertz- to- optical devices as well as radio-frequency acoustic devices where piezoelectricity in aluminum nitride can also be exploited
Distribution of genetic diversity reveals colonization patterns and philopatry of the loggerhead sea turtles across geographic scales.
Understanding the processes that underlie the current distribution of genetic diversity in endangered species is a goal of modern conservation biology. Specifically, the role of colonization and dispersal events throughout a species' evolutionary history often remains elusive. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) faces multiple conservation challenges due to its migratory nature and philopatric behaviour. Here, using 4207 mtDNA sequences, we analysed the colonisation patterns and distribution of genetic diversity within a major ocean basin (the Atlantic), a regional rookery (Cabo Verde Archipelago) and a local island (Island of Boa Vista, Cabo Verde). Data analysis using hypothesis-driven population genetic models suggests the colonization of the Atlantic has occurred in two distinct waves, each corresponding to a major mtDNA lineage. We propose the oldest lineage entered the basin via the isthmus of Panama and sequentially established aggregations in Brazil, Cabo Verde and in the area of USA and Mexico. The second lineage entered the Atlantic via the Cape of Good Hope, establishing colonies in the Mediterranean Sea, and from then on, re-colonized the already existing rookeries of the Atlantic. At the Cabo Verde level, we reveal an asymmetric gene flow maintaining links across island-specific nesting groups, despite significant genetic structure. This structure stems from female philopatric behaviours, which could further be detected by weak but significant differentiation amongst beaches separated by only a few kilometres on the island of Boa Vista. Exploring biogeographic processes at diverse geographic scales improves our understanding of the complex evolutionary history of highly migratory philopatric species. Unveiling the past facilitates the design of conservation programmes targeting the right management scale to maintain a species' evolutionary potential
A Tonnetz Model for pentachords
This article deals with the construction of surfaces that are suitable for
representing pentachords or 5-pitch segments that are in the same class.
It is a generalization of the well known \"Ottingen-Riemann torus for triads of
neo-Riemannian theories. Two pentachords are near if they differ by a
particular set of contextual inversions and the whole contextual group of
inversions produces a Tiling (Tessellation) by pentagons on the surfaces. A
description of the surfaces as coverings of a particular Tiling is given in the
twelve-tone enharmonic scale case.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figure
The gray matter volume of the amygdala is correlated with the perception of melodic intervals: a voxel-based morphometry study
Music is not simply a series of organized pitches, rhythms, and timbres, it is capable of evoking emotions. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was employed to explore the neural basis that may link music to emotion. To do this, we identified the neuroanatomical correlates of the ability to extract pitch interval size in a music segment (i.e., interval perception) in a large population of healthy young adults (N = 264). Behaviorally, we found that interval perception was correlated with daily emotional experiences, indicating the intrinsic link between music and emotion. Neurally, and as expected, we found that interval perception was positively correlated with the gray matter volume (GMV) of the bilateral temporal cortex. More important, a larger GMV of the bilateral amygdala was associated with better interval perception, suggesting that the amygdala, which is the neural substrate of emotional processing, is also involved in music processing. In sum, our study provides one of first neuroanatomical evidence on the association between the amygdala and music, which contributes to our understanding of exactly how music evokes emotional responses
Advances in prevention and therapy of neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea : a systematical review with emphasis on colostrum management and fluid therapy
Neonatal calf diarrhoea remains the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in preweaned dairy calves worldwide. This complex disease can be triggered by both infectious and non-infectious causes. The four most important enteropathogens leading to neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea are Escherichia coli, rota-and coronavirus, and Cryptosporidium parvum. Besides treating diarrhoeic neonatal dairy calves, the veterinarian is the most obvious person to advise the dairy farmer on prevention and treatment of this disease. This review deals with prevention and treatment of neonatal dairy calf diarrhoea focusing on the importance of a good colostrum management and a correct fluid therapy
