A psychoanalytic concept illustrated: Will, must, may, can — revisiting the survival function of primitive omnipotence
The author explores the linear thread connecting the theory of Freud and Klein, in terms of the central significance of the duality of the life and death instinct and the capacity of the ego to tolerate contact with internal and external reality. Theoretical questions raised by later authors, informed by clinical work with children who have suffered deprivation and trauma in infancy, are then considered. Theoretical ideas are illustrated with reference to observational material of a little boy who suffered deprivation and trauma in infancy. He was first observed in the middle of his first year of life while he was living in foster care, and then later at the age of two years and three months, when he had been living with his adoptive parents for more than a year
Infrared light emission from atomic point contacts
Gold atomic point contacts are prototype systems to evidence ballistic
electron transport. The typical dimension of the nanojunction being smaller
than the electron-phonon interaction length, even at room temperature,
electrons transfer their excess energy to the lattice only far from the
contact. At the contact however, favored by huge current densities,
electron-electron interactions result in a nano hot electron gas acting as a
source of photons. Using a home built Mechanically Controlled Break Junction,
it is reported here, for the first time, that this hot electron gas also
radiates in the infrared range (0.2eV to 1.2eV). Moreover, in agreement with
the pioneering work of Tomchuk, we show that this radiation is compatible with
a blackbody like spectrum emitted from an electron gas at temperatures of
several thousands of Kelvin given by where ,
and are respectively a fitting parameter, the current flowing and the

Large-Scale Radio Structure in the Universe: Giant Radio Galaxies
Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), with linear sizes larger than 1 Mpc (H0=50
km/s/Mpc), represent the biggest single objects in the Universe. GRGs are rare
among the entire population of radio galaxies (RGs) and their physical
evolution is not well understood though for many years they have been of
special interest for several reasons. The lobes of radio sources can compress
cold gas clumps and trigger star or even dwarf galaxy formation, they can also
transport gas from a host galaxy to large distances and seed the IGM with
magnetic fields. Since GRGs have about 10 to 100 times larger sizes than normal
RGs, their influence on the ambient medium is correspondingly wider and is
pronounced on scales comparable to those of clusters of galaxies or larger.
Therefore `giants' could play an important role in the process of large-scale
structure formation in the Universe. Recently, thanks to the new all sky radio

The relationship between insulin binding, insulin activation of insulin-receptor tyrosine kinase, and insulin stimulation of glucose uptake in isolated rat adipocytes
We have studied the relationship between insulin activation of insulin-receptor kinase and insulin stimulation of glucose uptake in isolated rat adipocytes. Glucose uptake was half-maximally or maximally stimulated, respectively, when only 4% or 14% of the maximal kinase activity had been reached. To investigate this relationship also under conditions where the insulin effect on activation of receptor kinase was decreased, the adipocytes were exposed to 10 microM-isoprenaline alone or with 5 micrograms of adenosine deaminase/ml. An approx. 30% (isoprenaline) or approx. 50% (isoprenaline + adenosine deaminase) decrease in the insulin effect on receptor kinase activity was found at insulin concentrations between 0.4 and 20 ng/ml, and this could not be explained by decreased insulin binding. The decreased insulin-effect on kinase activity was closely correlated with a loss of insulin-sensitivity of glucose uptake. Moreover, our data indicate that the relation between receptor kinase activity and glucose uptake (expressed as percentage of maximal uptake) remained unchanged. The following conclusions were drawn. (1) If activation of receptor kinase stimulates glucose uptake, only 14% of the maximal kinase activity is sufficient for maximal stimulation. (2) Isoprenaline decreases the coupling efficiency between insulin binding and receptor-kinase activation, this being accompanied by a corresponding decrease in sensitivity of glucose uptake. (3) Our data indicate that the signalling for glucose uptake is closely related to receptor-kinase activity, even when the coupling efficiency between insulin binding and kinase activation is altered. They thus support the hypothesis that receptor-kinase activity reflects the signal which originates from the receptor and which is transduced to the glucose-transport system
The 32-GHz performance of the DSS-14 70-meter antenna: 1989 configuration
The results of preliminary 32 GHz calibrations of the 70 meter antenna at Goldstone are presented. Measurements were done between March and July 1989 using Virgo A and Venus as the primary efficiency calibrators. The flux densites of theses radio sources at 32 GHz are not known with high accuracy, but were extrapolated from calibrated data at lower frequencies. The measured value of efficiency (0.35) agreed closely with the predicted value (0.32), and the results are very repeatable. Flux densities of secondary sources used in the observations were subsequently derived. These measurements were performed using a beamswitching radiometer that employed an uncooled high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT) low-noise amplifier. This system was installed primarily to determine the performance of the antenna in its 1989 configuration, but the experience will also aid in successful future calibration of the Deep Space Network (DSN) at this frequency
