    Even chained acylcarnitines predict long-term cardiovascular prognosis in patients with chest pain and non-obstructive coronary artery disease

    Background Acylcarnitines are essential for mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation. Earlier studies suggest that impaired energy metabolism may be implicated in the pathogenesis of microvascular angina. We explored metabolites from the carnitine pathway as predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) - and all-cause mortality among patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD). Methods A total of 1046 patients with suspected stable coronary syndrome underwent coronary angiography during 2000–2004, with findings of NOCAD. Serum levels of 8 selected carnitine metabolites were analyzed through liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Associations with CVD- and all-cause mortality were assessed by multivariable Cox regression models. Results Median age at inclusion was 57 years. 51.5% were men. During median (25th- 75th percentiles), 14.1 (13.2–15.4) years of follow-up, 5.7% of the participants died from CVD and the incidence of all-cause mortality was 17.3%. Serum acetyl, octanoyl- and palmitoylcarnitine predicted CVD mortality with multivariable HR and 95% CI (per SD increment log transformed) of 1.36 (1.01–1.83), 1.49 (1.15–1.93) and 2.07 (1.49–2.85), p ≤ 0.04, respectively. Higher serum acetyl- and palmitoylcarnitines were also associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR (95% CI): 1.27 (1.01–1.50), and 1.51 (1.26–1.81), p ≤ 0.007. Baseline levels of the precursors trimethyllysine and ƴ-butyrobetaine, carnitine or the odd chained propionylcarnitine and (iso)valerylcarnitine were not associated with adverse outcomes. Conclusion Elevated serum even-chained acylcarnitines predicted adverse long-term prognosis in NOCAD. The strongest risk estimates were observed for palmitoylcarnitine, which predicted both CVD- and all-cause mortality after extensive multivariable adjustments.     The contribution of seafood to global food security is being increasingly highlighted in policy. However, the extent to which such claims are supported in the current food security literature is unclear. This review assesses the extent to which seafood is represented in the recent food security literature, both individually and from a food systems perspective, in combination with terrestrially-based production systems. The results demonstrate that seafood remains under-researched compared to the role of terrestrial animal and plant production in food security. Furthermore, seafood and terrestrial production remain siloed, with very few papers addressing the combined contribution or relations between terrestrial and aquatic systems. We conclude that far more attention is needed to the specific and relative role of seafood in global food security and call for the integration of seafood in a wider interdisciplinary approach to global food system research

    Aquatic Foods to Nourish Nations

    Despite contributing to healthy diets for billions of people, aquatic foods are often undervalued as a nutritional solution because their diversity is often reduced to the protein and energy value of a single food type (‘seafood’ or ‘fish’)1,2,3,4. Here we create a cohesive model that unites terrestrial foods with nearly 3,000 taxa of aquatic foods to understand the future impact of aquatic foods on human nutrition. We project two plausible futures to 2030: a baseline scenario with moderate growth in aquatic animal-source food (AASF) production, and a high-production scenario with a 15-million-tonne increased supply of AASFs over the business-as-usual scenario in 2030, driven largely by investment and innovation in aquaculture production. By comparing changes in AASF consumption between the scenarios, we elucidate geographic and demographic vulnerabilities and estimate health impacts from diet-related causes. Globally, we find that a high-production scenario will decrease AASF prices by 26% and increase their consumption, thereby reducing the consumption of red and processed meats that can lead to diet-related non-communicable diseases5,6 while also preventing approximately 166 million cases of inadequate micronutrient intake.     Fish for food and nutrition security in Ghana: Challenges and opportunities

    Fish is an important dietary source of micronutrients, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. In Ghana, effective management of fish and the fisheries is essential for food, economic and nutrition security and is critical towards achieving many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals especially those pertaining to hunger, poverty, gender equality and life under water. Ghana has experienced significant economic growth in the last few decades, but increasing inequality, uncertainties in fish availability and unsustainable management of the fisheries are challenging local food and nutrition security. This literature review examines and evaluates the role of fish and fisheries in supporting FNS in Ghana, and highlights the lack of focus on fish in the literature with regard to regional food security and fisheries governance. Our review highlights the importance of ensuring the viability of small fish populations to enhance micronutrient availability and counteract micronutrient deficiencies in Ghana. Additionally, strengthening women's role in decision making and promoting female education and empowerment in the fisheries sector is an important strategy towards enhancing FNS in the region.publishedVersio
