A Brief Journey through Asian American History

    Get PDF
In order to understand the complexities of the Asian American experience, readers must be able to comprehend how the past has built a foundation for the treatment of individuals both inside and outside of the Asian community. Based on various academic editorials and books, we have analyzed what we believe to be the most valuable historical facts, stories, and ideas and presented them in a way that provides the most important information along with our perceptions of each topic. This compilation of articles looks to bring largely unknown issues to the forefront of reader’s minds, in a pursuit to create a better understanding of what it means to be Asian American today. The importance of historical events in how they affect modern society, social norms, and race relations is more important now more than ever. Beginning with a commentary on the history of Chinese exclusion in California during the late 1800’s, the pieces that follow touch upon multiple historical events related to various communties within the Asian community including Japanese internment, the Revolutionary War in the Philippines, the treatment of Korean immigrants following the Korean War, and much more. The existence of intersectionality between the Asian American identity and numerous other identities cannot be overlooked. All of the issues presented have an influence on both the African American and LGBTQ+ communities. We kindly ask readers to not only keep in mind how these articles have shaped their own lives, but also to remember how these acts of injustice have changed the perception of all other minorities. The main theme of this project can be encapsulated in a quote from legendary Japanese clothing designer Yohji Yamamoto: “With one eye on the past, I walk backwards into the future”https://digital.sandiego.edu/ethn-zines/1012/thumbnail.jp

Pattern Recognition Using Average Patterns of Categorical k-Nearest Neighbors

    Get PDF
The typical nonparametric method of pattern recognition "k-nearest neighbor rule (kNN)" is carried out by counting the labels of k-nearest training samples to a test sample. This method collects the k-nearest neighbors without taking into account a class, and it outputs the class of the test sample by using only the labels of neighborhoods. This paper presents a classifier that outputs the class of a test sample by measuring the distance between the test sample and the average patterns, which are calculated using the k-nearest neighbors belonging to individual classes. A kernel method can be applied to this classifier for improving recognition rates. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experiments with benchmark data sets.ICPR 2004, August 23-26, 2004, Cambridge, U

Unmixed spectrum clustering for template composition in lung sound classification

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose a method for composing templates of lung sound classification. First, we obtain a sequence of power spectra by FFT for each given lung sound and compute a small number of component spectra by ICA for each of the overlapping sets of tens of consecutive power spectra. Second, we put component spectra obtained from various lung sounds into a single set and conduct clustering a large number of times. When component spectra belong to the same cluster in all clustering results, these spectra show robust similarity. Therefore, we can use such spectra to compose a template of lung sound classification.Advances in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. 12th Pacific-Asia Conference, PAKDD 2008 Osaka, Japan, May 20-23, 2008 Proceeding

A Classifier Based on Distance between Test Samples and Average Patterns of Categorical Nearest Neighbors

    Get PDF
The recognition rate of the typical nonparametric method "k-Nearest Neighbor rule (kNN)" is degraded when the dimensionality of feature vectors is large. Another nonparametric method "linear subspace methods" cannot represent the local distribution of patterns, so recognition rates decrease when pattern distribution is not normal distribution. This paper presents a classifier that outputs the class of a test sample by measuring the distance between the test sample and the average patterns, which are calculated using nearest neighbors belonging to individual categories. A kernel method can be applied to this classifier for improving its recognition rates. The performance of those methods is verified by experiments with handwritten digit patterns and two class artificial ones.Ninth International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (IWFHR\u2704), 26-29 Oct. 200

The reoperation rate after single-level ACDFs

Introduction : The plate fixation for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has become increasingly widespread for facilitating early mobilization and improving fusion rate. However, apart from multilevel operations, there is still some controversy over its use for single-level ACDF. This retrospective study has compared the reoperation rates after single-level ACDFs performed at our institution between the procedures with and without plate fixation. Methods : This retrospective study included a total of 131 patients with ≥ 1-year of follow-up after a single-level ACDF, consisting of 100 patients without plating (conventional ACDF) and 31 patients with plate fixation (plated ACDF). Results : Eleven patients (8.4% of all patients) : four conventional ACDFs (4% of the conventional ACDFs) and seven plated ACDFs (22.6% of the plated ACDFs), had reoperation surgeries. The incidence of reoperation was significantly higher in the plated ACDFs than in the conventional ACDFs (P = 0.0037). The log-rank test revealed a significant difference (P = 0.00003) in 5-year reoperation-free survival rates between the conventional (96.9%) and the plated groups (68.3%). Conclusion : Anterior cervical plating may have a negative impact on the adjacent segment integrity, resulting in an increased reoperation rate after a single-level ACDF at relatively shorter postoperative time points

Effect of High CO2 plus Low O2 Condition on Respiration in Several Fruits and Vegetables

Adaptive Subpixel Estimation of Land Cover in a Remotely Sensed Multispectral Image

Land surface corresponding to a pixel of remotely sensed image does not necessarily consist of only one category of objects. Several techniques of subpixel analysis have been developed which estimate the proportion of components of land cover in a pixel. However, when the available training data do not correctly represent the spectral characteristics of the categories in the pixel, large errors may appear in the results of estimation. The method of unsupervised estimation of component spectra has been presented to solve this problem. In this paper we present a method which apply the unsupervised analysis technique to subpixel estimation of land cover in an image in which spectral characteristics change with the location of the objective area. After partitioning the image into blocks, the number of categories and their component spectra are estimated in each block. Then the proportion of category are estimated for each pixel using the component spectra derived in the block. We confirmed the validity of this method by numerical simulationSICE-ICASE International Joint Conference 2006 Oct.18-21, 2006 in Bexco, Busan, Kore
