    Identification of criticality in neuronal avalanches: II. A theoretical and empirical investigation of the Driven case

    The observation of apparent power laws in neuronal systems has led to the suggestion that the brain is at, or close to, a critical state and may be a self-organised critical system. Within the framework of self-organised criticality a separation of timescales is thought to be crucial for the observation of power-law dynamics and computational models are often constructed with this property. However, this is not necessarily a characteristic of physiological neural networks—external input does not only occur when the network is at rest/a steady state. In this paper we study a simple neuronal network model driven by a continuous external input (i.e. the model does not have an explicit separation of timescales from seeding the system only when in the quiescent state) and analytically tuned to operate in the region of a critical state (it reaches the critical regime exactly in the absence of input—the case studied in the companion paper to this article). The system displays avalanche dynamics in the form of cascades of neuronal firing separated by periods of silence. We observe partial scale-free behaviour in the distribution of avalanche size for low levels of external input. We analytically derive the distributions of waiting times and investigate their temporal behaviour in relation to different levels of external input, showing that the system’s dynamics can exhibit partial long-range temporal correlations. We further show that as the system approaches the critical state by two alternative ‘routes’, different markers of criticality (partial scale-free behaviour and long-range temporal correlations) are displayed. This suggests that signatures of criticality exhibited by a particular system in close proximity to a critical state are dependent on the region in parameter space at which the system (currently) resides

    In this paper, we study a simple model of a purely excitatory neural network that, by construction, operates at a critical point. This model allows us to consider various markers of criticality and illustrate how they should perform in a finite-size system. By calculating the exact distribution of avalanche sizes, we are able to show that, over a limited range of avalanche sizes which we precisely identify, the distribution has scale free properties but is not a power law. This suggests that it would be inappropriate to dismiss a system as not being critical purely based on an inability to rigorously fit a power law distribution as has been recently advocated. In assessing whether a system, especially a finite-size one, is critical it is thus important to consider other possible markers. We illustrate one of these by showing the divergence of susceptibility as the critical point of the system is approached. Finally, we provide evidence that power laws may underlie other observables of the system that may be more amenable to robust experimental assessment

    Conservative Populism, or Unpopular Liberalism? Review of the 2018 Ontario Provincial Election

    Ontario’s general election on June 7, 2018, brought the Progressive Conservative party to government for the first time in the 21st Century. The PCs’ victory over the incumbent Liberals, however, reached this point despite much turmoil. Months before the election the party faced a crisis when its leader, Patrick Brown, resigned amid a scandal. The PC party hastily organized a leadership election that put Doug Ford at the helm, who then led the party to victory. The following election review traces these steps and looks at some dynamics that contributed to both the PC leadership vote and the overall result of the election. The PC leadership election is analyzed, providing evidence that Ford’s rise may reflect some of the populist sentiment that has gripped other democracies. The analysis then turns to the general election, focusing on media coverage and issue salience, particularly as they relate to the party leaders. Survey data are examined to build some explanatory vote-choice models, which shows that voters in the general election appeared less moved by populism than a desire to punish the Liberals

    Discovery of the spectroscopic binary nature of the classical Cepheids FN Aql and V1344 Aql

    We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of two classical Cepheids, FN Aquilae and V1344 Aquilae. Based on the joint treatment of the new and earlier radial velocity data, both Galactic Cepheids have been found to be a member in a spectroscopic binary system. To match the phases of the earlier radial velocity data correctly with the new ones, we also determined the temporal behaviour of the pulsation period of these Cepheids based on all available photometric data. The O-C graph covering about half century shows slight changes in the pulsation period due to stellar evolution for both Cepheids.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publishing in the MNRA

    Oscillating epidemics in a dynamic network model: stochastic and mean-field analysis

    An adaptive network model using SIS epidemic propagation with link-type-dependent link activation and deletion is considered. Bifurcation analysis of the pairwise ODE approximation and the network-based stochastic simulation is carried out, showing that three typical behaviours may occur; namely, oscillations can be observed besides disease-free or endemic steady states. The oscillatory behaviour in the stochastic simulations is studied using Fourier analysis, as well as through analysing the exact master equations of the stochastic model. By going beyond simply comparing simulation results to mean-field models, our approach yields deeper insights into the observed phenomena and help better understand and map out the limitations of mean-field models

    Enhanced NMR relaxation of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and the magnitude of the carbon hyperfine coupling in single-wall carbon nanotubes

    Recent transport measurements [Churchill \textit{et al.} Nat. Phys. \textbf{5}, 321 (2009)] found a surprisingly large, 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than usual 13^{13}C hyperfine coupling (HFC) in 13^{13}C enriched single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). We formulate the theory of the nuclear relaxation time in the framework of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory to enable the determination of the HFC from recent data by Ihara \textit{et al.} [Ihara \textit{et al.} EPL \textbf{90}, 17004 (2010)]. Though we find that 1/T11/T_1 is orders of magnitude enhanced with respect to a Fermi-liquid behavior, the HFC has its usual, small value. Then, we reexamine the theoretical description used to extract the HFC from transport experiments and show that similar features could be obtained with HFC-independent system parameters.Comment: 5 pages plus 2 supplementary material

    HAT-P-13: a multi-site campaign to detect the transit of the second planet in the system

    A possible transit of HAT-P-13c has been predicted to occur on 2010 April 28. Here we report on the results of a multi-site campaign that has been organised to detect the event. CCD photometric observations have been carried out at five observatories in five countries. We reached 30% time coverage in a 5 days interval centered on the suspected transit of HAT-P-13c. Two transits of HAT-P-13b were also observed. No transit of HAT-P-13c has been detected while the campaign was on. By a numerical experiment with 10^5 model systems we conclude that HAT-P-13c is not a transiting exoplanet with a significance level from 65% to 72%, depending on the planet parameters and the prior assumptions. We present two times of transit of HAT-P-13b ocurring at BJD 2455141.5522 +- 0.0010 and BJD 2455249.4508 +- 0.0020. The TTV of HAT-P-13b is consistent with zero within 0.001 days. The refined orbital period of HAT-P-13b is 2.916293 +- 0.000010 days.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be accepted by A&

    The 2014 general election in Ontario was the third straight time when the opposition Progressive Conservative party was poised to win, only to find itself returned to the opposition benches. Part of the the incumbent Liberal party's victory certainly can be attributed to strategic choices of the party, positioning itself closer to where voters wanted them to be. However, there is also a case to be made that the PCs squandered their chance to form government.     The period-luminosity relation of red supergiants with Gaia DR2

    We revisit the K -band period-luminosity (P-L) relations of Galactic red supergiants using Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes and up to 70 yr of photometry from AAVSO and ASAS campaigns. In addition, we examine 206 LMC red supergiants using 50 yr of photometric data from the Digitised Harvard Astronomical Plate Collection. We identified periods by computing power spectra and calculated the period-luminosity relations of our samples and compared them with the literature. Newly available data tighten the P-L relations substantially. Identified periods form two groups: one with periods of 300-1000 days, corresponding to pulsations, and another with Long Secondary Periods between 1000 and 8000 days. Among the 48 Galactic objects we find shorter periods in 25 stars and long secondary periods in 23 stars. In the LMC sample we identify 85 and 94 red supergiants with shorter and long secondary periods, respectively. The P-L relation of the Galactic red supergiants is in agreement with the red supergiants in both, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Andromeda Galaxy.
