Novel Bonding technologies for wafer-level transparent packaging of MOEMS
Depending on the type of Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS), packaging
costs are contributing up to 80% of the total device cost. Each MEMS device
category, its function and operational environment will individually dictate
the packaging requirement. Due to the lack of standardized testing procedures,
the reliability of those MEMS packages sometimes can only be proven by taking
into consideration its functionality over lifetime. Innovation with regards to
cost reduction and standardization in the field of packaging is therefore of
utmost importance to the speed of commercialisation of MEMS devices. Nowadays
heavily driven by consumer applications the MEMS device market is forecasted to
enjoy a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) above 13%, which is when compared to
the IC device market, an outstanding growth rate. Nevertheless this forecasted
value can drift upwards or downwards depending on the rate of innovation in the
field of packaging. MEMS devices typically require a specific fabrication
process where the device wafer is bonded to a second wafer which effectively
encapsulates the MEMS structure. This method leaves the device free to move
within a vacuum or an inert gas atmosphere.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association

China Maritime Report No. 31: China\u27s Submarine Industrial Base: State-Led Innovation with Chinese Characteristics
In recent years, Chinaâs naval industries have made tremendous progress supporting the modernization of the Peopleâs Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarine force, both through robust commitment to research and development (R&D) and the upgrading of production infrastructure at the countryâs three submarine shipyards: Bohai Shipyard, Huludao; Wuchang Shipyard, Wuhan; and Jiangnan Shipyard, Shanghai. Nevertheless, Chinaâs submarine industrial base continues to suffer from surprising weaknesses in propulsion (from marine diesels to fuel cells) and submarine quieting. Closer ties with Russia could provide opportunities for China to overcome these enduring technological limitations by exploiting political and economic levers to gain access to Russiaâs remaining undersea technology secrets.https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/cmsi-maritime-reports/1030/thumbnail.jp

EUROPEAN UNION POLICY-MAKING ON ROBOTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: SELECTED ISSUES
This article uses the recently issued report on civil law rules
on robotics by the European Parliamentâs Committee on Legal Affairs
as an anchoring point. After a brief overview of the topicâs socio-economical background, it contains an attempt to define and explain artificial intelligence. By examining the role of autonomous machines
in the workforce, it gives an overview of the most pressing questions
the future of labour might bring. One closely connected issue is the
still unanswered question of liability regarding artificially intelligent
robots, which will most certainly have to be tackled by future policy
makers. Another such open question is a new approach on creativity,
where the key phrase âown intellectual creationâ might have to be redefined in order to cover copyrightable works produced by computers.
Lastly, the European Parliamentâs Report on Robotics calls for a new
European Agency for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is addressed
Fatigue, depression and health-related quality of life in patients with post-myocardial infarction during the COVID-19 pandemic: results from the Augsburg Myocardial Infarction Registry
The interplay between fatigue and depression and their association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has received little attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study evaluated the frequency of fatigue and depression in post-AMI patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigated the cross-sectional associations between fatigue, depression and HRQoL. Methods: The analysis was based on population-based Myocardial Infarction Registry Augsburg data. All survivors of AMI between 1 June 2020 and 15 September 2021 were included (n = 882) and received a postal questionnaire containing questions about fatigue (Fatigue Assessment Scale), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire), and HRQoL (MacNew Heart Disease HRQoL questionnaire) on 17 November 2021. The questionnaire was returned by 592 patients (67.1%), and 574 participants could be included in the analysis. Multivariable linear regression models were performed to investigate the associations between fatigue and depression (both exposures) and HRQoL (outcome). Results: Altogether, 273 (47.6%) participants met the criteria for the presence of fatigue, about 16% showed signs of moderate to severe depression. Both fatigue and depression were significantly associated with a decreased HRQoL (total score and emotional, social, and physical subscales; all p-values < 0.0001). In particular, a combined occurrence of fatigue and depression was associated with a significantly reduced HRQoL. Conclusions: It seems necessary to screen post-MI patients for the presence of fatigue and depression in clinical practice on a routine basis to provide them with adequate support and treatment and thus also to improve their HRQoL
Cross-cultural validity of four quality of life scales in persons with spinal cord injury
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Quality of life (QoL) in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) has been found to differ across countries. However, comparability of measurement results between countries depends on the cross-cultural validity of the applied instruments. The study examined the metric quality and cross-cultural validity of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LISAT-9), the Personal Well-Being Index (PWI) and the 5-item World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQoL-5) across six countries in a sample of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional multi-centre study was conducted and the data of 243 out-patients with SCI from study centers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, South Africa, and the United States were analyzed using Rasch-based methods.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The analyses showed high reliability for all 4 instruments (person reliability index .78-.92). Unidimensionality of measurement was supported for the WHOQoL-5 (Chi2 = 16.43, df = 10, p = .088), partially supported for the PWI (Chi2 = 15.62, df = 16, p = .480), but rejected for the LISAT-9 (Chi2 = 50.60, df = 18, p = .000) and the SWLS (Chi2 = 78.54, df = 10, p = .000) based on overall and item-wise Chi2 tests, principal components analyses and independent t-tests. The response scales showed the expected ordering for the WHOQoL-5 and the PWI, but not for the other two instruments. Using differential item functioning (DIF) analyses potential cross-country bias was found in two items of the SWLS and the WHOQoL-5, three items of the LISAT-9 and four items of the PWI. However, applying Rasch-based statistical methods, especially subtest analyses, it was possible to identify optimal strategies to enhance the metric properties and the cross-country equivalence of the instruments post-hoc. Following the post-hoc procedures the WHOQOL-5 and the PWI worked in a consistent and expected way in all countries.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>QoL assessment using the summary scores of the WHOQOL-5 and the PWI appeared cross-culturally valid in persons with SCI. In contrast, summary scores of the LISAT-9 and the SWLS have to be interpreted with caution. The findings of the current study can be especially helpful to select instruments for international research projects in SCI.</p
