Call Before You Fall
National organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) have prioritized reduction of inpatient falls as a patient safety goal. An improvement project utilizing the model for improvement and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles was conducted on a 40-bed unit that provides care to cardiac, and medical-surgical patients. The current fall prevention quality council team is composed of nurses and interdisciplinary clinicians, who focus on improving clinical and financial outcomes related to fall prevention and potential injuries. A Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) was asked to lead a practice improvement project in response to chart audits and observational rounding that indicated a gap in patient awareness of fall prevention activities and lack of consistent implementation of established fall prevention measures by nursing staff. The aim of this project was to increase awareness and knowledge of patients related to fall prevention and staff education to improve reliability of implementation actions to reduce falls. Data was collected over a three-month period and new interventions including a fall prevention tool kit and communication campaign – “Call Before You Fall” were developed and implemented to reduce fall rates by 50% every month. Results from staff education are expected to improve based on pre and post data comparison of education provided during shift huddles. Data results post intervention proved to decrease the rate of falls. Clearly, fall prevention activities need to address both communication and education interventions to improve fall reduction outcomes
Developing Instructional Skills: Perspectives of Feedback in Student Teaching
Feedback is essential for the transformation and development of new teachers. This action research study explored perceptions of feedback givers/receivers in the development of essential teaching skills in a new co-teaching model. Outcomes informed programmatic changes to teacher education trainings and protocols. The research team included teacher education faculty, including the program leader (author 1), faculty (author 2) and K-12 teacher leader (author 3). Student teachers (6), cooperating teachers (7), and university supervisors (3) participated in semi-standard interviews and close-ended surveys. Responses were analyzed for feedback content, frequency, timing, effectiveness, reception and application. Three key components of the feedback process were identified: Goals (What), Relationship (How), and Effect (Change). The relationship between the student teacher receiving and the supervisor providing the feedback significantly influenced student teacher perception and application of feedback. Resulting programmatic changes include cooperating teacher selection criteria, co-teaching training, regular triad team meetings, and rubric-based feedback protocols

Pre-service Teachers Identify Connections Between Teaching-learning and Literacy Strategies
This study explores the transformation of pre-service teachers in their attainment of effective teaching skills. Pre-service teachers learn about the learning-to-read process and implementations of component skills of teaching reading within the practicum. More importantly, pre-service teachers achieve a meaningful understanding of the declarative, procedural and strategic knowledge of working with struggling readers as well as the merits, utilities and appropriate applications of important literacy skills. Through reflecting, rehearsing, and revising teaching/learning practices, pre-service teachers are able to augment scripted Direct Instruction curriculum to improve student reading performance, and further generate meaningful learning gains that promote sustainability for themselves and their students
Thinking Critically About Data Displays
The quality of a data display can have an impact on the interpretation of those data. A survey of the literature indicates that data displays can vary in quality of accuracy, clarity, and efficacy. In this study we develop and apply an evaluative rubric to graphs in a sample of six education journals: three research and three practitioner. Results indicate that graph quality is typically high in educational journals, however, in practitioner oriented journals issues around graph clarity and efficacy should be addressed. Common error patterns are pinpointed, and four recommendations are made to authors and editors: focus on meaningful labels, increase amount of data displayed, portray multiple relationships, and elaborate with supporting text

Women often consider their own femininity as centered on the idea of family. In the same way, traditional ideas of family have a strong feminine presence in them. By placing these concepts in a historical and sociological context, we open opportunities for the identification of other experiences that are similar to those presented by the researched group of mothers on the topic. This article is part of a Master’s Dissertation that presents some ideas on motherhood. We introduce some elements intrinsic to this condition, discussing the relationship between them, and taking into account social influences as well as women’s ongoing roles
Tesi
