In-ground vibration propagation characteristics during underground blasting
Purpose. In this study, we investigated the vibration propagation characteristics in ground caused by the explosion pressures during ground and underground blasting. In addition, the use of Styrofoam as a simulation medium, which represents the void during underground blasting, was investigated.
Methods. The investigation method is the measuring and comparing the vibrations using variable trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge amounts and underground volumetric spaces.
Findings. The regression analysis results based on experimental calculations indicated that the vibration levels were lower and vibration attenuation occurred more rapidly during underground blasting than those during ground blasting.
Originality. As the underground volumetric space increased, the vibration levels lowered and vibration attenuation became more gradual.
Practical implications. The use of Styrofoam to simulate the void in the underground space during blasting was deemed inappropriate, however, Styrofoam may be appropriate as a medium for low-impedance grounds.
I would like to thank the Republic of Korea ARMY for supporting the experiment
Biomolecular sensing using surface micromachined silicon plates
Micromachined sensors to detect surface stress changes associated with interactions between an immobilized chemically selective receptor and a target analyte are presented. The top isolated sensing surface of a free-standing silicon plate is prepared with a thin Au layer, followed by a covalent attachment of chemical or biomolecule forming a chemically-selective surface. Surface stress changes in air are measured capacitively due to the formation of an alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Detection of biomolecular binding in liquid samples is measured optically using the streptavidin-biotin complex and AM. tuberculosis antigen-antibody system used for clinical tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis
A gap isolation method to investigate electrical and mechanical properties of fully contracting skeletal muscle fibers
We describe here a single-gap isolation method that allows the simultaneous measurement of electrical activity and tension output from fully contracting segments of frog skeletal muscle fibers. By using single pulses and pulse trains of varying frequency (5–100 Hz), records obtained for both electrical and mechanical fiber response demonstrate that the physiological properties of the fiber segments have been preserved. Action potentials could be recorded free of movement artifacts, even while segments were in fused tetani and developing maximum tensions of more than 600 kN/m2. Single current pulses evoked action potentials that averaged 144 +/- 16 mV (mean +/- SD, n = 8) in amplitude and twitches that averaged 285 +/- 66 kN/m2 and 55 +/- 5 ms (mean +/- SD, n = 20) in magnitude and time to peak, respectively. Trains of action potentials elicited patterns of tension development that exhibited summation, unfused tetani, and fused tetani in a frequency-dependent manner. The AC and DC electrical properties of the single grease gap were modeled with a simple Thévenin equivalent circuit, which satisfactorily predicted the experimental results. Our methodology is easily implemented and potentially applicable to any muscle preparation in which fiber segments with an intact end attached to a piece of tendon can be dissected
Standing waves in the Lorentz-covariant world
When Einstein formulated his special relativity, he developed his dynamics
for point particles. Of course, many valiant efforts have been made to extend
his relativity to rigid bodies, but this subject is forgotten in history. This
is largely because of the emergence of quantum mechanics with wave-particle
duality. Instead of Lorentz-boosting rigid bodies, we now boost waves and have
to deal with Lorentz transformations of waves. We now have some understanding
of plane waves or running waves in the covariant picture, but we do not yet
have a clear picture of standing waves. In this report, we show that there is
one set of standing waves which can be Lorentz-transformed while being
consistent with all physical principle of quantum mechanics and relativity. It
is possible to construct a representation of the Poincar\'e group using
harmonic oscillator wave functions satisfying space-time boundary conditions.
This set of wave functions is capable of explaining the quantum bound state for
both slow and fast hadrons. In particular it can explain the quark model for
hadrons at rest, and Feynman's parton model hadrons moving with a speed close
to that of light.Comment: LaTex 20 pages, presented at the 2004 meeting of the International

Damping mechanism for the strongly renormalized -axis charge transport in high- cuprate superconductors
We analyze the -axis infrared reflectivity of
LaSrCuO single crystals. The plasma edge near 6 meV,
observed below , is due to Cooper-pair tunneling. This low value of the
plasma edge is consistent with the -axis plasma frequency () obtained
from LDA calculations ( eV) if we take into account that the
single-particle charge transport along the axis is strongly incoherent both
above and below . We find no evidence for a reduction of the -axis
scattering rate () below . Our investigation suggests
, which is exactly opposite to the clean limit.

Stochastic Resonance in Washboard Potentials
We study the mobility of an overdamped particle in a periodic potential
tilted by a constant force. The mobility exhibits a stochastic resonance in
inhomogeneous systems with space dependent friction coefficient. The result
indicates that the presence of oscillating external field is not essential for
the observability of stochastic resonance, at least in the inhomogenous medium.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Photo and electroluminescence behavior of Tb(ACAC)3phen complex used as emissive layer on organic light emitting diodes
This work shows the luminescence properties of a rare-earth organic complex, the Tb(ACAC)3phen. The results show the 5D4 -> 7F3,4,5,6 transitions with no influence of any ligand emission. The photoluminescence excitation spectrum is tentatively interpreted by the ligands absorption. An OLED was made by thermal evaporation (total thickness of 1200 Å) using TPD and Alq3 as hole and electron transport layers, respectively. The light emission reproduces the photoluminescence spectrum of the terbium complex at room temperature, with CIE (x,y) color coordinates of (0.28, 0.55). No presence of any bands from the ligands was observed. The potential use of this compound in efficient devices is discussed
Resources and student achievement – evidence from a Swedish policy reform
This paper utilizes a policy change to estimate the effect of teacher density on student performance. We find that an increase in teacher density has a positive effect on student achievement. The baseline estimate – obtained by using the grade point average as the outcome variable – implies that resource increases corresponding to the class-size reduction in the STAR-experiment (i.e., a reduction of 7 students) improves performance by 2.6 percentile ranks (or 0.08 standard deviations). When we use test score data for men, potentially a more objective measure of student performance, the effect of resources appears to be twice the size of the baseline estimate.Student performance; teacher/student ratio; policy reform; differences-in-differences
Aligning archive maps and extracting footprints for analysis of historic urban environments.
Archive cartography and archaeologist's sketches are invaluable resources when analysing a historic town or city. A virtual reconstruction of a city provides the user with the ability to navigate and explore an environment which no longer exists to obtain better insight into its design and purpose. However, the process of reconstructing the city from maps depicting features such as building footprints and roads can be labour intensive. In this paper we present techniques to aid in the semi-automatic extraction of building footprints from digital images of archive maps and sketches. Archive maps often exhibit problems in the form of inaccuracies and inconsistencies in scale which can lead to incorrect reconstructions. By aligning archive maps to accurate modern vector data one may reduce these problems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the footprint extraction methods may be improved by aligning either modern vector data or previously extracted footprints, since common elements can be identified between maps of differing time periods and only the difference between the two needs to be extracted. An evaluation of two alignment approaches is presented: using a linear affine transformation and a set of piecewise linear affine transformations
