Recent finding and new technologies in nephrolithiasis: a review of the recent literature
This review summarizes recent literature on advances regarding renal and ureteral
calculi, with particular focus in areas of recent advances in the overall field
of urolithiasis. Clinical management in everyday practice requires a complete
understanding of the issues regarding metabolic evaluation and subgrouping of
stone-forming patients, diagnostic procedures, effective treatment regime in
acute stone colic, medical expulsive therapy, and active stone removal. In this
review we focus on new perspectives in managing nephrolitihiasis and discuss
recentadvances, including medical expulsive therapy, new technologies, and
refinements of classical therapy such as shock wave lithotripsy, give a
fundamental modification of nephrolithiasis management. Overall, this field
appears to be the most promising, capable of new developments in ureterorenoscopy
and percutaneous approaches. Further improvements are expected from
robotic-assisted procedures, such as flexible robotics in ureterorenoscopy
Relativistic Klein-Gordon charge effects by information-theoretic measures
The charge spreading of ground and excited states of Klein-Gordon particles
moving in a Coulomb potential is quantitatively analyzed by means of the
ordinary moments and the Heisenberg measure as well as by use of the most
relevant information-theoretic measures of global (Shannon entropic power) and
local (Fisher's information) types. The dependence of these complementary
quantities on the nuclear charge Z and the quantum numbers characterizing the
physical states is carefully discussed. The comparison of the relativistic
Klein-Gordon and non-relativistic Schrodinger values is made. The
non-relativistic limits at large principal quantum number n and for small

Dynamic Collection Scheduling Using Remote Asset Monitoring: Case Study in the UK Charity Sector
Remote sensing technology is now coming onto the market in the waste collection sector. This technology allows waste and recycling receptacles to report their fill levels at regular intervals. This reporting enables collection schedules to be optimized dynamically to meet true servicing needs in a better way and so reduce transport costs and ensure that visits to clients are made in a timely fashion. This paper describes a real-life logistics problem faced by a leading UK charity that services its textile and book donation banks and its high street stores by using a common fleet of vehicles with various carrying capacities. Use of a common fleet gives rise to a vehicle routing problem in which visits to stores are on fixed days of the week with time window constraints and visits to banks (fitted with remote fill-monitoring technology) are made in a timely fashion so that the banks do not become full before collection. A tabu search algorithm was developed to provide vehicle routes for the next day of operation on the basis of the maximization of profit. A longer look-ahead period was not considered because donation rates to banks are highly variable. The algorithm included parameters that specified the minimum fill level (e.g., 50%) required to allow a visit to a bank and a penalty function used to encourage visits to banks that are becoming full. The results showed that the algorithm significantly reduced visits to banks and increased profit by up to 2.4%, with the best performance obtained when the donation rates were more variable
Androgen Deprivation Therapy Potentiates the Efficacy of Vascular Targeted Photodynamic Therapy of Prostate Cancer Xenografts
WST11 vascular targeted photodynamic therapy (VTP) is a local ablation approach relying upon rapid, free radical-mediated destruction of tumor vasculature. A phase III trial showed that VTP significantly reduced disease progression when compared with active surveillance in patients with low-risk prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to identify a druggable pathway that could be combined with VTP to improve its efficacy and applicability to higher risk prostate cancer tumors. Transcriptome analysis of VTP-treated tumors (LNCaP-AR xenografts) was used to identify a candidate pathway for combination therapy. The efficacy of the combination therapy was assessed in mice bearing LNCaP-AR or VCaP tumors. Gene set enrichment analysis identifies the enrichment of androgen-responsive gene sets within hours after VTP treatment, suggesting that the androgen receptor (AR) may be a viable target in combination with VTP. We tested this hypothesis in mice bearing LNCaP-AR xenograft tumors by using androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), degarelix, in combination with VTP. Compared with either ADT or VTP alone, a single dose of degarelix in concert with VTP significantly inhibited tumor growth. A sharp decline in serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) confirmed AR inhibition in this group. Tumors treated by VTP and degarelix displayed intense terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling staining 7 days after treatment, supporting an increased apoptotic frequency underlying the effect on tumor inhibition. Improvement of local tumor control following androgen deprivation combined with VTP provides the rationale and preliminary protocol parameters for clinical trials in patients presented with locally advanced prostate cancer.
Extinction law variations and dust excitation in the spiral galaxy NGC 300
We investigate the origin of the strong radial gradient in the
ultraviolet-to-infrared ratio in the spiral galaxy NGC 300, and emphasize the
importance of local variations in the interstellar medium geometry, concluding
that they cannot be neglected with respect to metallicity effects. This
analysis is based upon a combination of maps from GALEX and Spitzer, and from
the ground (UBVRI, Halpha and Hbeta). We select ionizing stellar clusters
associated with HII regions of widely varying morphologies, and derive their
fundamental parameters from population synthesis fitting of their spectral
energy distributions, measured to eliminate local backgrounds accurately. From
these fits, we conclude that the stellar extinction law is highly variable in
the line of sight of young clusters of similar ages. In the particular model
geometry that we consider most appropriate to the sampled regions, we checked
that our findings are not significantly altered by the correct treatment of
radiative transfer effects. The variations are systematic in nature: extinction
laws of the Milky Way or LMC type are associated with compact HII regions (the
compacity being quantified in two different ways), while clusters surrounded by
diffuse HII regions follow extinction laws of the 30 Doradus or SMC type. The
Calzetti starburst attenuation law, although most often degenerate with the 30
Doradus extinction law, overpredicts ionizing photon fluxes by large amounts.
We also find that the extinction law variations are correlated with the column
density of dust species emitting in the near- and mid-infrared. Finally, we
briefly discuss the nebular to stellar extinction ratios, and the excitation of

Single photon generation by pulsed excitation of a single dipole
The fluorescence of a single dipole excited by an intense light pulse can
lead to the generation of another light pulse containing a single photon. The
influence of the duration and energy of the excitation pulse on the number of
photons in the fluorescence pulse is studied. The case of a two-level dipole
with strongly damped coherences is considered. The presence of a metastable
