The influence of temporal coherence on the dynamical Casimir effect

We study the dynamical Casimir effect in the presence of a finite coherence time, which is associated with a finite quality factor of the optical cavity. We use the time refraction model, where a fixed cavity with a modulated optical medium, replaces the empty cavity with a vibrating mirror. Temporal coherence is described with the help of cavity quasi-mode operators. Asymptotic expressions for the number of photon pairs generated from vacuum are derived.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

    Multiscale Partition of Unity

We introduce a new Partition of Unity Method for the numerical homogenization of elliptic partial differential equations with arbitrarily rough coefficients. We do not restrict to a particular ansatz space or the existence of a finite element mesh. The method modifies a given partition of unity such that optimal convergence is achieved independent of oscillation or discontinuities of the diffusion coefficient. The modification is based on an orthogonal decomposition of the solution space while preserving the partition of unity property. This precomputation involves the solution of independent problems on local subdomains of selectable size. We deduce quantitative error estimates for the method that account for the chosen amount of localization. Numerical experiments illustrate the high approximation properties even for 'cheap' parameter choices.Comment: Proceedings for Seventh International Workshop on Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations, 18 pages, 3 figure

Commissioning of the electron injector for the AWAKE experiment

The advanced wakefield experiment (AWAKE) at CERN is the first proton beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment. The main goal of AWAKE RUN 1 was to demonstrate seeded self-modulation (SSM) of the proton beam and electron witness beam acceleration in the plasma wakefield. For the AWAKE experiment, a 10-meter-long Rubidium-vapor cell together with a high-power laser for ionization was used to generate the plasma. The plasma wakefield is driven by a 400 GeV/c proton beam extracted from the super proton synchrotron (SPS), which undergoes a seeded self-modulation process in the plasma. The electron witness beam used to probe the wakefields is generated from an S-band RF photo-cathode gun and then accelerated by a booster structure up to energies between 16 and 20 MeV. The first run of the AWAKE experiment revealed that the maximum energy gain after the plasma cell is 2 GeV, and the SSM mechanism of the proton beam was verified. In this paper, we will present the details of the AWAKE electron injector. A comparison of the measured electron beam parameters, such as beam size, energy, and normalized emittance, with the simulation results was performed

Background In a fast growing domestic LED luminary market, both manufacturers and consumers are confronted with problems that threaten its sustainable development: An oversupply of products that aggravates the profitability of manufacturers, high prices and uncertainty of ROI, and no systemic measure to cope with the environmental pressure at the after-use phase. The need for strategical innovation that achieves sustainability and competitiveness is thus supported. Methods This paper introduces a case of developing PSS for an intelligent LED system as a strategy to enhance competitiveness and sustainability of the industry. It suggests an approach to develop a solution based on a comprehensive understanding of stakeholder needs. Based on the primary and secondary data, content analysis was conducted to elicit stakeholder needs. The result led to the identification of design problems and solution generation. Result The ESCO stakeholders have highly diverse needs which are often interdependent and conflicting. A new PSS thus aimed at addressing the identified needs, and simultaneously achieving economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. Its economic feasibility was validated through a field test. Conclusion This paper proposes a stakeholder-centered approach to PSS development with a case of servitizing LED luminaries. It provides a methodology and insights to designers, policy makers, and companies who are interested in supporting or developing new product-service systems with improved environmental sustainability and economic viability.clos

Intensifying rehabilitation of combined sewer systems using trenchless technology in combination with low impact development and green infrastructure

Throughout Europe, there is a considerable need for investment in the upgrade of sewer systems – due to three main factors: ageing infrastructure, climate change and urban population growth. The need for investments is expected to grow significantly in the years ahead. Trenchless rehabilitation (no-dig) of sewer pipelines is a cost-efficient and environmental friendly method for upgrading existing pipelines with sufficient capacity. This study examines the possibility of applying no-dig to combined sewer systems (CS) with insufficient capacity. In this study, a concept assessment methodology that combines the analytical approaches from stormwater and sewer system assessments is presented. The methodology was tested on a case area that was part of an environmental project in Oslo, Norway. Three alternative concepts were examined; A0: no-dig and low impact development (LID), A1: no-dig, LID and green infrastructure (GI), and A2: CS up-sizing using open-cut methods. The study concludes that CS with insufficient capacity can be rehabilitated using no-dig if LID and GI. The combination of no-dig and LID reduces costs considerably but does involve the risk of damages from uncontrolled surface runoff. The main risk-reduction measure is the development of GI as an integrated stormwater management system that requires cross-sector collaboration within municipalities.publishedVersio

Universal scaling of the Hall resistivity in MgB2 superconductors

The mixed-state Hall resistivity and the longitudinal resistivity in superconducting MgB2 thin films have been investigated as a function of the magnetic field over a wide range of current densities from 100 to 10000 A/cm^2. We observe a universal Hall scaling behavior with a constant exponent of 2.0, which is independent of the magnetic field, the temperature, and the current density. This result can be interpreted well within the context of recent theories.Comment: 4 page

Transport of Surface States in the Bulk Quantum Hall Effect

The two-dimensional surface of a coupled multilayer integer quantum Hall system consists of an anisotropic chiral metal. This unusual metal is characterized by ballistic motion transverse and diffusive motion parallel (\hat{z}) to the magnetic field. Employing a network model, we calculate numerically the phase coherent two-terminal z-axis conductance and its mesoscopic fluctuations. Quasi-1d localization effects are evident in the limit of many layers. We consider the role of inelastic de-phasing effects in modifying the transport of the chiral surface sheath, discussing their importance in the recent experiments of Druist et al.Comment: 9 pages LaTex, 9 postscript figures included using eps

By combining pentaborane (B5H9) and decarborane (B10H14) with methane in a plasma reactor, a variety of boron-carbides can be made over a wide range of compositions. The resulting thin films have uniform composition and appear to be polycrystalline

Simulating (electro)hydrodynamic effects in colloidal dispersions: smoothed profile method

Previously, we have proposed a direct simulation scheme for colloidal dispersions in a Newtonian solvent [Phys.Rev.E 71,036707 (2005)]. An improved formulation called the ``Smoothed Profile (SP) method'' is presented here in which simultaneous time-marching is used for the host fluid and colloids. The SP method is a direct numerical simulation of particulate flows and provides a coupling scheme between the continuum fluid dynamics and rigid-body dynamics through utilization of a smoothed profile for the colloidal particles. Moreover, the improved formulation includes an extension to incorporate multi-component fluids, allowing systems such as charged colloids in electrolyte solutions to be studied. The dynamics of the colloidal dispersions are solved with the same computational cost as required for solving non-particulate flows. Numerical results which assess the hydrodynamic interactions of colloidal dispersions are presented to validate the SP method. The SP method is not restricted to particular constitutive models of the host fluids and can hence be applied to colloidal dispersions in complex fluids
