On the influence of the magnetic field of the GSI experimental storage ring on the time-modulation of the EC-decay rates of the H-like mother ions
We investigate the influence of the magnetic field of the
Experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI on the periodic time-dependence of the
orbital K-shell electron capture decay ) rates of the H--like heavy ions.
We approximate the magnetic field of the ESR by a uniform magnetic field.
Unlike the assertion by Lambiase et al., arXiv: 0811.2302 [nucl-th], we show
that a motion of the H-like heavy ion in a uniform magnetic field cannot be the
origin of the periodic time-dependence of the EC-decay rates of the H-like
heavy ions.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur
First-principles modelling of molecular single-electron transistors
We present a first-principles method for calculating the charging energy of a
molecular single-electron transistor operating in the Coulomb blockade regime.
The properties of the molecule are modeled using density-functional theory, the
environment is described by a continuum model, and the interaction between the
molecule and the environment are included through the Poisson equation. The
model is used to calculate the charge stability diagrams of a benzene and
C molecular single-electron transistor
Time-Resolved Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy for selected photon paths beyond 300 transport mean free paths
This paper is devoted to the theoretical and experimental demonstration of
the possibility to perform time-resolved diffusing wave spectroscopy: we
successfully registered field fluctuations for selected photon path lengths
that can overpass 300 transport mean free paths. Such a performance opens new
possibilities for biomedical optics applications.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Green-pumped, picosecond MgO:PPLN optical parametric oscillator
We investigate the performance of a magnesium-oxide-doped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal (MgO:PPLN) in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) synchronously-pumped by 530nm, 20ps, 230MHz pulses with an average power of up to 2W from a frequency-doubled, gain-switched laser diode seed and a multi-stage Yb:fiber amplifier system. The OPO produces ~165mW (signal, 845nm) and ~107mW (idler, 1421nm) of average power for ~1W of pump power and can be tuned from ~800nm to 900nm (signal) and 1.28µm to 1.54µm (idler). Observations of photo-refraction and green-induced infrared absorption (GRIIRA) in different operational regimes of the MgO:PPLN OPO are described and the role of peak intensity and average power are investigated, both with the aim to find the optimal operating regime for pulsed systems
Vegetation plot and trait data from phonolitic and basaltic rocks on La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain)
Geodiversity promotes biodiversity by increasing habitat heterogeneity. In times of a global biodiversity decline, data about diversity on such geological elements gains importance, also regarding conservation and restoration. In the Canary Islands, phonolitic rocks are geological elements of volcanic origin that represent additional habitat for species. In the southern part of the island La Palma, phonolite rocks can be encountered in matrices of young lava. We provide biotic and abiotic records from 60 plots of 2 m × 2 m, sampled on phonolitic and neighbouring basaltic outcrops at four different sites that cover a wide environmental gradient. The recorded parameters were species abundances (percentage cover), plant individuals' frequency (number of plant individuals per plot and species), plant growth height (in cm), and canopy diameter (in cm). Additionally, lichen cover (percentage cover) was estimated. To describe site specific characteristics, we recorded plot surface dynamics (3D rock surface), aspect, and inclination. This data set covers vegetation and trait data comparing phonolites and basalts on La Palma. It can be used for island biogeography, vegetation ecology and conservation sciences to help support fundamental research related to insular biodiversity and endemism, and to identify priority areas for protection and preservation in the Canary Islands
