    Effect of rootstock on nutrition, pollination and fertilisation in 'Shiraz' (Vitis vinifera L.)

    Rootstocks have previously been shown to alter reproductive performance in grapevines. The concentration of nutrients associated with pollination and fertilisation in grapevines such as boron, calcium, zinc and molybdenum were determined in petiole and pollen tissue from vines from a 'Shiraz' (Vitis vinifera L.) rootstock trial at flowering. 'Shiraz' on own roots had a higher calcium concentration in the petioles across the three seasons than the rootstock treatments. This coincided with higher seeded berry number, total number of berries per bunch and berry weight compared to rootstock treatments. '1103 Paulsen' had a significantly higher amount of boron and a lower number of seedless berries and a lower millerandage index (MI). Zinc deficiency was observed for '110 Richter' and '140 Ruggeri' across the three seasons and when zinc was found to be deficient, coulure index (CI) was increased. In the third and final year of the analysis pollen nutrition was incorporated into the analysis. Deficiency of molybdenum in both pollen and petiole analysis resulted in reduced berry weight due to stenospermocarpy or seed shrivel. Rootstocks with the highest number of pollen grains on the stigma also had the highest number of ovules fertilised. Calcium, zinc, boron and molybdenum are nutrients essential for pollination and fertilisation in grapevines and rootstocks were found to affect the sequestration of nutrients which affected reproductive performance.

    Regional impact on rootstock/scion mediated methoxypyrazine accumulation in rachis

    Aim: To investigate the impact of Geographical Indications (GI) of South Australia on the rootstock/scion-mediated methoxypyrazine accumulation within the rachis of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Methods and Results: Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz bunches were sampled at maturity from two South Australian GIs over the 2019 and 2020 harvest periods. From each region, a minimum of 18 bunches per rootstock/scion combination were sampled from across the vineyard and their rachis material was assessed for 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine (IBMP). Results indicated that region and rootstock choice significantly affect the concentrations of methoxypyrazines within the rachis material of both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties at harvest. Conclusion: This research highlights the effect of regionality on the concentration of methoxypyrazines within the rachis material of Cabernet and Shiraz vines grown on common rootstock varieties. The outcomes will conceivably inform viticulturalists and winemakers of how methoxypyrazine characteristics of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon rachis are impacted by common rootstock/scion combinations permitting informed rootstock selection and assisting in production of a target wine style. Significance and Impact of the Study: The presence of rachis material during red must fermentation can confer methoxypyrazines to the wine. The presence of methoxypyrazines, and predominately 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine (IBMP), in red wine can impact the flavour and aroma profile due to their ‘green’ and ‘earthy’ characteristics. Interestingly, this phenomenon has been shown to impact the aroma profile of Shiraz wines, a variety that has not been shown to naturally produce methoxypyrazines within the berries. Furthermore, it appears that the concentration of methoxypyrazines within the rachis is mediated by rootstock/scion combination and the region in which the vines are grown. As rootstock uptake increases across Australia in response to biological threats and abiotic stresses, an understanding of the viticultural and regional influences on rootstock/scion mediated rachis composition is essential to facilitate the production of high-quality Australian wines under increasingly challenging conditions.Ross D.     Primary physical education, coaches and continuing professional development

More recently, some teaching of PE in primary schools has been undertaken by coaches (mostly football coaches). These coaches hold national governing body awards but do not hold teaching qualifications. Thus, coaches may not be adequately prepared to teach PE in curriculum time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of a group of community-based football coaches working in primary schools for the impact of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme on their ability to undertake ‘specified work’ to cover PE in primary schools. The programme focused on four areas identified as important to enable coaches to cover specified work: short- and medium-term planning, pedagogy, knowledge of the curriculum and reflection. Results showed that for the majority of coaches the CPD programme had made them more aware of the importance of these four areas and had helped to develop their knowledge and ability to put this into practice in covering planning, preparation and assessment time. However, further input is still required to develop coaches’ knowledge and understanding in all four areas, but especially their curriculum knowledge, as well as their ability to put these into practice consistently. These findings are discussed in relation to the implications of employing coaches to cover the teaching of PE in primary schools and, if employed, what CPD coaches need to develop the necessary knowledge, skill and understanding for covering specified work in schools

    HIV/AIDS, declining family resources and the community safety net

    Families play central roles in the HIV/AIDS pandemic, caring for both orphaned children and the ill. This extra caregiving depletes two family resources essential for supporting children: time and money. We use recent data from published studies in sub-Saharan Africa to illustrate deficits and document community responses. In Botswana, parents caring for the chronically ill had less time for their preschool children (74 versus 96 hours per month) and were almost twice as likely to leave children home alone (53% versus 27%); these children experienced greater health and academic problems. Caregiving often prevented adults from working full time or earning their previous level of income; 47% of orphan caregivers and 64% of HIV/AIDS caregivers reported financial difficulties due to caregiving. Communities can play an important role in helping families provide adequate childcare and financial support. Unfortunately, while communities commonly offer informal assistance, the value of such support is not adequate to match the magnitude of need: 75% of children's families in Malawi received assistance from their social network, but averaging only US$81 annually. We suggest communities can strengthen the capacity of families by implementing affordable quality childcare for 0–6 year olds, after-school programming for older children and youth, supportive care for ill children and parents, microlending to enhance earnings, training to increase access to quality jobs, decent working conditions, social insurance for the informal sector, and income and food transfers when families are unable to make ends meet

    The traditional, the ideal and the unexplored: sport coaches’ social identity constructs in film

    The sport coaching construct within mainstream fiction films has been described as stereotypical, reinforcing the traditional notion of the sport coach as a technician who conquers all, or a hapless individual, open to ridicule from athletes and fans. Although this depiction is also prevalent in some independent fiction films and documentaries, film sub genres such as social realism and “fly on the wall” style documentaries move away from the “Hollywood sports film structure” towards stories that focus on everyday coaching moments. Through a critical discourse analysis of two U.K. films (Bend it Like Beckham and Twenty Four Seven), both featuring sport coaches in central roles, we reflect critically on these mass media multidimensional representations in terms of the sport coaching professionalisation agenda in the U.K. and the social identification process of sport coaches within their sporting environments.     Reflection and the art of coaching: fostering high-performance in olympic ski cross

    In preparation for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the lead author engaged in systematic reflection in an attempt to implement coaching behaviours and create practice environments that promoted athlete development (psycho-social and physical performance). The research was carried out in relation to his work as head Ski Cross coach working with (primarily) three athletes in their quest for Olympic qualification and subsequent performance success in the Olympic Games. This project sought to examine coach-athlete interactions. Of particular interest were coach and athlete responses regarding the implementation of autonomy supportive coaching behaviours in a high context. Autonomy supportive coaching behaviours have previously been strongly associated with positive athlete psycho-social and performance outcomes, however, a paucity of research has examined its implementation in high-performance contexts. Through the use of participant ethnography, it was possible to gain considerable insights regarding athletes' perceptions of choice, implications of perceived athletic hierarchies, as well as cultural and experience-related influences on training and performance expectations

    A statistical approach to quantitative data validation focused on the assessment of students' perceptions about biotechnology

    Student awareness levels are frequently used to evaluate the effectiveness of educational policies to promote scientific literacy. Over the last years several studies have been developed to assess students' perceptions towards science and technology, which usually rely on quantitative methods to achieve broad characterizations, and obtain quantifiable and comparable data. Although the usefulness of this information depends on its validity and reliability, validation is frequently neglected by researchers with limited background in statistics. In this context, we propose a guideline to implement a statistical approach to questionnaire validation, combining exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. The work focuses on the psychometric analysis of data provided by a questionnaire assessing 1196 elementary and high school students' perceptions about biotechnology. Procedural guidelines to enhance the efficiency of quantitative inquiry surveys are given, by discussing essential methodological aspects and relevant criteria to integrate theory into practice.The authors are grateful to all the participant teachers and students that contributed to gather the data presented and to Catarina L.
