Prioritising the care of critically ill children: a pilot study using SCREEN reduces clinic waiting times
Objective In low-resource settings, childhood mortality secondary to delays in triage and treatment remains high. This paper seeks to evaluate the impact of the novel Sick Children Require Emergency Evaluation Now (SCREEN) tool on the waiting times of critically ill children who present for care to primary healthcare clinics in Cape Town, South Africa. Methods We used a pre/postevaluation study design to calculate the median waiting times of all children who presented to four randomly chosen clinics for 5 days before, and 5 days after, the implementation of SCREEN. Findings The SCREEN programme resulted in statistical and clinically significant reductions in waiting times for children with critical illness to see a professional nurse (2 hours 45 min to 1 hour 12 min; p<0.001). There was also a statistically significant reduction in the proportion of children who left without being seen by a professional nurse (25.8% to 18.48%; p<0.001). Conclusions SCREEN is a novel programme that uses readily available laypersons, trained to make a subjective assessment of children arriving at primary healthcare centres, and provides a low cost, simple methodology to prioritise children and reduce waiting times in low-resource healthcare clinics
Fine Details of the Nodal Electronic Excitations in BiSrCaCuO
Very high energy resolution photoemission experiments on high quality samples
of optimally doped BiSrCaCuO show new features in the
low-energy electronic excitations. A marked change in the binding energy and
temperature dependence of the near-nodal scattering rates is observed near the
superconducting transition temperature, . The temperature slope of the
scattering rate measured at low energy shows a discontinuity at ~. In the
superconducting state, coherent excitations are found with the scattering rates
showing a cubic dependence on frequency and temperature. The superconducting
gap has a d-wave magnitude with negligible contribution from higher harmonics.
Further, the bi-layer splitting has been found to be finite at the nodal point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Comparison of three commercial sparse-matrix crystallization screens
Sparse-matrix sampling using commercially available crystallization screen kits has become the most popular way of determining the preliminary crystallization conditions for macromolecules. In this study, the efficiency of three commercial screening kits, Crystal Screen and Crystal Screen 2 (Hampton Research), Wizard Screens I and II (Emerald BioStructures) and Personal Structure Screens 1 and 2 (Molecular Dimensions), has been compared using a set of 19 diverse proteins. 18 proteins yielded crystals using at least one crystallization screen. Surprisingly, Crystal Screens and Personal Structure Screens showed dramatically different results, although most of the crystallization formulations are identical as listed by the manufacturers. Higher molecular weight polyethylene glycols and mixed precipitants were found to be the most effective precipitants in this study
Borrelia burgdorferi and the causative agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in deer ticks, Delaware.
During the 1998 hunting season in Delaware, 1,480 ticks were collected from 252 white- tailed deer; 98% were Ixodes scapularis, a significant increase from the 85% reported in 1988. Ticks were tested for Borrelia burgdorferi and the causative agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis. Infection rates remained stable in New Castle and Kent counties, but increased from <1% to 8% in sussex county
On the Reconstructed Fermi Surface in the Underdoped Cuprates
The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples the high-Tc superconductor
Bi2212 have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining
thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the Fermi surfaces
in the pseudogap phase of underdoped samples are actually composed of fully
enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly
small at the anti-ferromagnetic zone boundary, which creates the illusion of
Fermi "arcs" in standard photoemission measurements. The area of the pockets as
measured in this study is consistent with the doping level, and hence carrier
density, of the samples measured. Furthermore, the shape and area of the
pockets is well reproduced by a phenomenological model of the pseudogap phase

Manipulation of subsurface carbon nanoparticles in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ using a scanning tunneling microscope
We present evidence that subsurface carbon nanoparticles in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ can be manipulated with nanometer precision using a scanning tunneling microscope. High-resolution images indicate that most of the carbon particles remain subsurface after transport observable as a local increase in height as the particle pushes up on the surface. Tunneling spectra in the vicinity of these protrusions exhibit semiconducting characteristics with a band gap of approximately 1.8 eV, indicating that the incorporation of carbon locally alters the electronic properties near the surface

This article explores the problems associated with ’national identity’ in the UK and examines the tensions arising between the international and local dimensions of the games through examples of domestic (UK) and international (Brazil, Chicago) media coverage of the key debates relating to London’s period of preparation. The chapter proposes a conception of London 2012 as exemplar of an event poised to generate insights and experiences connected to a new politics of ’cosmopolitan’ identity; insights central to grasping the cultural politics of contemporary urban development-and the paradoxes of national identity in current discourses of Olympism. Properly speaking, cosmopolitanism suits those people who have no country, while internationalism should be the state of mind of those who love their country above all, who seek to draw to it the friendship of foreigners by professing for the countries of those foreigners an intelligent and enlightened sympathy. © 2010 Taylor & Francis
