    Surface disorder production during plasma immersion implantation and high energy ion implantation

    High-depth-resolution Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) combined with channeling technique was used to analyze the surface layer formed during plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) of single crystal silicon substrates. Single wavelength multiple angle of incidence ellipsometry (MAIE) was applied to estimate the thickness of the surface layer. The thickness of the disordered layer is much higher than the projected range of P ions and it is comparable with that of protons.\ud \ud Another example of surface damage investigation is the analysis of anomalous surface disorder created by 900 keV and 1.4 MeV Xe implantation in 100 silicon. For the 900 keV implants the surface damage was also characterized with spectroellipsometry (SE). Evaluation of ellipsometric data yields thickness values for surface damage that are in reasonable agreement with those obtained by RBS

    In the last decades, WLEDs attract more and more consideration in both academic and industrial purposes because of its advantages such as fast response time, environment friendliness, small size, long lifetime, and high efficiency. In this research, by doping the red-emitting Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor particles into yellow-emitting YAG:Ce phosphor-packaging, a new recommendation for enhancing the optical properties (color uniformity, color rendering index, and lumen output) of the 8500 K remote-phosphor packaging WLEDs is presented, investigated, and demonstrated. By using Mat Lab and Light Tools software based on Mie Theory, the obtained results show that the optical properties of the 8500 K remote-phosphor packaging WLEDs significantly depended on Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ concentration. The results have provided a potential practical recommendation for manufacturing remote-phosphor W-LEDs.Web of Science1341034102

    Spin-dependent correlation in two-dimensional electron liquids at arbitrary degeneracy and spin-polarization: CHNC approach

    We apply the classical mapping technique developed recently by Dharma-wardana and Perrot for a study of the uniform two-dimensional electron system at arbitrary degeneracy and spin-polarization. Pair distribution functions, structure factors, the Helmhotz free energy, and the compressibility are calculated for a wide range of parameters. It is shown that at low temperatures T/ T_F <0.1, T_F being the Fermi temperature, our results almost reduce to those of zero-temperature analyses. In the region T/ T_F >= 1, the finite temperature effects become considerable at high densities for all spin-polarizations. We find that, in our approximation without bridge functions, the finite temperature electron system in two dimensions remains to be paramagnetic fluid until the Wigner crystallization density. Our results are compared with those of three-dimensional system and indicated are the similarities in temperature, spin-polarization, and density dependencies of many physical properties.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    Is vitrification involved in depression of the phase transition temperature in dry phospholipids?

    AbstractRecent literature has suggested that the depression of the phase transition temperature (Tm) in dry phospholipids by sugars may be ascribed to vitrification of the stabilizing solute, rather than by the direct interaction between sugar and phospholipid we have proposed. Koster et al. ((1994) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1193, 14–150) claim that the only necessity is that the glass transition (Tg) for the sugar exceed Tm for the lipid. Evidence is presented in the present paper that this is not sufficient. Based on the vitrification hypothesis of Koster et al., the predicted order of effectiveness in depressing Tm in dry dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) is dextran ≥ hydroxyethyl starch > stachyose > raffinose > trehalose > sucrose > glucose. In fact, the opposite order was seen. The effect of raffinose, sucrose, or trehalose on Tm in dry DPPC depends on the thermal history of the sample, as we have reported previously. When DPPC dried with trehalose is heated for the first time, Tm is about 55°C, but on the second and subsequent heating scans Tm falls to about 25°C. Koster et al. suggest that this effect is due to heating the sample above Tg rather than to melting the hydrocarbon chains. We present evidence here that all that is required is for the chains to be melted. Further, we show that retention of residual water by DPPC dried with trehalose depends on the drying temperature, but is independent of drying temperature with glucose, a finding that is consistent with direct interaction. We conclude that vitrification is not in itself sufficient to depress Tm in dry phospholipids

    Assessment of seasonal winter temperature forecast errors in the regcm model over northern Vietnam

    This study verified the seasonal six-month forecasts for winter temperatures for northern Vietnam in 1998–2018 using a regional climate model (RegCM4) with the boundary conditions of the climate forecast system Version 2 (CFSv2) from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). First, different physical schemes (land-surface process, cumulus, and radiation parameterizations) in RegCM4 were applied to generate 12 single forecasts. Second, the simple ensemble forecasts were generated through the combinations of those different physical formulations. Three subclimate regions (R1, R2, R3) of northern Vietnam were separately tested with surface observations and a reanalysis dataset (Japanese 55-year reanalysis (JRA55)). The highest sensitivity to the mean monthly temperature forecasts was shown by the land-surface parameterizations (the biosphere−atmosphere transfer scheme (BATS) and community land model version 4.5 (CLM)). The BATS forecast groups tended to provide forecasts with lower temperatures than the actual observations, while the CLM forecast groups tended to overestimate the temperatures. The forecast errors from single forecasts could be clearly reduced with ensemble mean forecasts, but ensemble spreads were less than those root-mean-square errors (RMSEs). This indicated that the ensemble forecast was underdispersed and that the direct forecast from RegCM4 needed more postprocessing

    Robotic Laser-Adaptive-Optics Imaging of 715 Kepler Exoplanet Candidates using Robo-AO

    The Robo-AO Kepler Planetary Candidate Survey is designed to observe every Kepler planet candidate host star with laser adaptive optics imaging to search for blended nearby stars, which may be physically associated companions and/or responsible for transit false positives. In this paper we present the results from the 2012 observing season, searching for stars close to 715 representative Kepler planet candidate hosts. We find 53 companions, 44 of which are new discoveries. We detail the Robo-AO survey data reduction methods including a method of using the large ensemble of target observations as mutual point-spread-function references, along with a new automated companion-detection algorithm designed for large adaptive optics surveys. Our survey is sensitive to objects from 0.15" to 2.5" separation, with contrast ratios up to delta-m~6. We measure an overall nearby-star-probability for Kepler planet candidates of 7.4% +/- 1.0%, and calculate the effects of each detected nearby star on the Kepler-measured planetary radius. We discuss several KOIs of particular interest, including KOI-191 and KOI-1151, which are both multi-planet systems with detected stellar companions whose unusual planetary system architecture might be best explained if they are "coincident multiple" systems, with several transiting planets shared between the two stars. Finally, we detect 2.6-sigma evidence for <15d-period giant planets being 2-3 times more likely be found in wide stellar binaries than smaller close-in planets and all sizes of further-out planets.Comment: Accepted by ApJ.     Kaluza-Klein Structure Associated With Fat Brane

    It is known that the imposition of orbifold boundary conditions on background scalar field can give rise to a non-trivial vacuum expectation value (VEV) along extra dimensions, which in turn generates fat branes and associated unconventional Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers of fermions. We study the structure of these KK towers in the limit of one large extra dimension and show that normalizable (bound) states of massless and massive fermions can exist at both orbifold fixed points. Closer look however indicates that orbifold boundary conditions act to suppress at least half of bound KK modes, while periodic boundary conditions tend to drive the high-lying modes to the conventional structure. By investigating the scattering of fermions on branes, we analytically compute masses and wavefunctions of KK spectra in the presence of these boundary conditions up to one-loop level.     Genome-wide association mapping for root traits in a panel of rice accessions from Vietnam

    Background: Despite recent sequencing efforts, local genetic resources remain underexploited, even though they carry alleles that can bring agronomic benefits. Taking advantage of the recent genotyping with 22,000 single-nucleotide polymorphism markers of a core collection of 180 Vietnamese rice varieties originating from provinces from North to South Vietnam and from different agrosystems characterized by contrasted water regimes, we have performed a genome-wide association study for different root parameters. Roots contribute to water stress avoidance and are a still underexploited target for breeding purpose due to the difficulty to observe them. Results: The panel of 180 rice varieties was phenotyped under greenhouse conditions for several root traits in an experimental design with 3 replicates. The phenotyping system consisted of long plastic bags that were filled with sand and supplemented with fertilizer. Root length, root mass in different layers, root thickness, and the number of crown roots, as well as several derived root parameters and shoot traits, were recorded. The results were submitted to association mapping using a mixed model involving structure and kinship to enable the identification of significant associations. The analyses were conducted successively on the whole panel and on its indica (115 accessions) and japonica (64 accessions) subcomponents. The two associations with the highest significance were for root thickness on chromosome 2 and for crown root number on chromosome 11. No common associations were detected between the indica and japonica subpanels, probably because of the polymorphism repartition between the subspecies. Based on orthology with Arabidopsis, the possible candidate genes underlying the quantitative trait loci are reviewed. Conclusions: Some of the major quantitative trait loci we detected through this genome-wide association study contain promising candidate genes encoding regulatory elements of known key regulators of root formation and development
