SOMvisua: Data Clustering and Visualization Based on SOM and GHSOM

    Get PDF
Text in web pages is based on expert opinion of a large number of people including the views of authors. These views are based on cultural or community aspects, which make extracting information from text very difficult. Search in text usually finds text similarities between paragraphs in documents. This paper proposes a framework for data clustering and visualization called SOMvisua. SOMvisua is based on a graph representation of data input for Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Growing Hierarchically Self-Organizing Map (GHSOM) algorithms. In SOMvisua, sentences from an input article are represented as graph model instead of vector space model. SOM and GHSOM clustering algorithms construct knowledge from this article

    Get PDF
Purpose - This paper examines the impact of corporate logos on corporate image and reputation in creating competitive advantage in the context of Persia and Mexico as emerging markets. This paper provides an extensive links between corporate logo and its dimension and internal stakeholders’ attitudes towards advertisement, familiarity, and recognisability as intermediaries to corporate image and reputation. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative exploratory approach was taken, comprising 12 face-to-face interviews 14 skype in-depth interviews were conducted with graphic designers, design, communication and marketing consultant in Mexico and Persia based on attribution theory. Findings - The study posits that the more favorable the name, color, typeface and design of the company and color, the more favorable the attitude Mexican consumers have towards the corporate logo, corporate image and reputation. However, in comparison for Persia these factors have less effect on customers’ judgment and behavior, towards the corporate logo, corporate image and reputation. The research findings suggest that the selection of color in a corporate logo is related to its marketing objectives, cultural values, desired customer relationship levels with the organisation, and organisation’s corporate communications. Practical implications - Corporate logo should be considered a constructive tool that can be effectively applied to managing the image and reputation of any organization. Moreover we suggest that regional or cultural variants can play an important role while selecting the logos in different cultures. The results are helpful for communication professionals who deal with organization’s corporate identity, branding, and communication, and aim to enhance the consistency of messages both visual and written within their organization Originality/value - Corporate logo has received little attention in marketing literature and barely been researched in emerging market. This is the first research of its kind to find the effect of the compound logo in emerging markets of Persia and Mexico. It thereby adds to the corporate visual identity literature by developing of the sphere of influence of the corporate logo and its antecedents and consequences (corporate image and corporate reputation)

Do Personality Traits Predict Students’ Interest and Intentions Toward Working in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry? Evidence from a Developing Country

    Get PDF
Drawing upon the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), this study aimed at predicting students’ interests and intentions to pursue a career in the tourism and hospitality (T&H) industry. Specifically, the study hypothesized that personality traits would have significant impacts on students’ self-efficacy and outcome expectations, which would further influence their interests and intentions toward working in the T&H industry. The results of the structural model showed that Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness significantly influence students’ self-efficacy and outcome expectations. However, Neuroticism and Agreeableness do only influence outcome expectations. Self-efficacy and outcome expectations were both significantly associated with students’ intentions to work in the industry. Implications for T&H educationalists and careers researchers, and directions for future research are also discussed

The carious status of the first permanent molar (FPM) was studied in 432 school children (aged 9–12 years) from a randomly selected primary schools from Sharfia area of Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The sample consisted of 108 children from each age group of 9, 10, 11, and 12 years old. In total, 24.5% had all of their FPMs sound and 6% had all FPMs carious. The prevalence of four sound FPMs varied according to age with the highest (33%) amongst the nine-year olds and the lowest (16.5%) in the oldest children (12 years). Almost one-third (32.5%) of the children, who knew the age of eruption of the FPMs, had all of their molars sound. The children who had received advice regarding oral hygiene from a dentist or parent had more sound FPMs compared to the children who did not receive any advice. The number of carious FPMs increased with age. The prevalence of caries of the FPM was high and increased with increasing age. The level of knowledge had a positive correlation with the caries levels amongst this cohort of scholars

Prostaglandin E2 enhances long-term repopulation but does not permanently alter inherent stem cell competitiveness

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is a lifesaving therapy for malignant and nonmalignant hematologic diseases and metabolic disorders. Although successful, hematopoietic transplantation can be hindered by inadequate stem cell number or poor engrafting efficiency. To overcome these deficits, we and others have previously reported the HSC-enhancing ability of a short-term exposure of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2); this strategy has now progressed to phase 1 clinical trials in double cord blood transplantation. To further analyze the short- and long-term effects of HSC exposure to PGE2, we followed the repopulation kinetics of PGE2-treated hematopoietic grafts through 5 serial transplantations and compared inherent long-term competitiveness in a HSC head-to-head secondary transplantation model. Treatment with PGE2 did not result in a long-term increase in HSC competitiveness, lineage bias, or enhanced proliferative potential, demonstrating that pulse exposure to PGE2 results in transient increases in HSC homing and engraftment potential

Dinamička distribucija sigurnosnih ključeva i koalicijski protokol IP adresa za mobilne ad hoc mreže

In mobile adhoc networks (MANETs) a tree-based dynamic address auto-configuration protocol (T-DAAP) is one of the best protocols designed for address assignment as far as the network throughput and packet delays are concerned. Moreover, MANET security is an important factor for many applications given that any node can listen to the channel and overhear the packets being transmitted. In this paper, we merge the address assignment with the security key delivery into one protocol, such that a node in the MANET is configured with IP address and security key simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, no single protocol provides concurrent assignment of IP addresses and security keys for MANET nodes. The proposed method, which is based on T-DAAP, shows significant enhancements in the required control packets needed for assigning network nodes IP addresses and security keys, MAC layer packets, total end-to-end delay, and channel throughput over those obtained when using separate protocols. Additionally, it provides not only efficient security keys to the nodes from the first moment they join the network, but also secure delivery of the address and security key to all participating nodes. It is noteworthy to mention that providing a complete security model for MANET to detect and countermeasure network security threats and attacks is beyond the scope of our proposed protocol.

Background: Little information is available on leptin concentrations in individuals with IGT. This study aims to determine and correlate leptin levels to anthropometric measures of obesity in prediabetic, (IFG and IGT), type 2 diabetic and normoglycaemic Saudis. Methods: 308 adult Saudis (healthy controls n = 80; pre-diabetes n = 86; Type 2 diabetes n = 142) participated. Anthropometric parameters were measured and fasting blood samples taken. Serum insulin was analysed, using a solid phase enzyme amplified sensitivity immunoassay and also leptin concentrations, using radio-immunoassay. The remaining blood parameters were determined using standard laboratory procedures. Results: Leptin levels of diabetic and pre-diabetic men were higher than in normoglycaemic men (12.4 [3.2–72] vs 3.9 [0.8–20.0] ng/mL, (median [interquartile range], p = 0.0001). In females, leptin levels were significantly higher in pre-diabetic subjects (14.09 [2.8–44.4] ng/mL) than in normoglycaemic subjects (10.2 [0.25–34.8] ng/mL) (p = 0.046). After adjustment for BMI and gender, hip circumference was associated with log leptin (p = 0.006 with R2 = 0.086) among all subjects. Conclusion: Leptin is associated with measures of adiposity, hip circumference in particular, in the non-diabetic state among Saudi subjects. The higher leptin level among diabetics and pre-diabetics is not related to differences in anthropometric measures of obesity

Purpose: To develop and optimise some variables that influence fluoxetine orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) formulation. Methods: Fluoxetine ODTs tablets were prepared using direct compression method. Three-factor, 3- level Box-Behnken design was used to optimize and develop fluoxetine ODT formulation. The design suggested 15 formulations of different lubricant concentration (X1), lubricant mixing time (X2), and compression force (X3) and then their effect was monitored on tablet weight (Y1), thickness (Y2), hardness (Y3), % friability (Y4), and disintegration time (Y5).Results: All powder blends showed acceptable flow properties, ranging from good to excellent. The disintegration time (Y5) was affected directly by lubricant concentration (X1). Lubricant mixing time (X2) had a direct effect on tablet thickness (Y2) and hardness (Y3), while compression force (X3) had a direct impact on tablet hardness (Y3), % friability (Y4) and disintegration time (Y5). Accordingly, Box-Behnken design suggested an optimized formula of 0.86 mg (X1), 15.3 min (X2), and 10.6 KN (X3). Finally, the prediction error percentage responses of Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, and Y5 were 0.31, 0.52, 2.13, 3.92 and 3.75 %, respectively. Formula 4 and 8 achieved 90 % of drug release within the first 5 min of dissolution test. Conclusion: Fluoxetine ODT formulation has been developed and optimized successfully using Box- Behnken design and has also been manufactured efficiently using direct compression technique. Keywords: Box-Behnken experimental design, Orally disintegrating tablets, Direct compression, Antidepressant, Magnesium stearate, Mixing tim

A novel  oxadiazole derivative, 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazole (Z)-4-((1-(5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)prop-1-en-2-yl)amino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3(2H)-one (HOPA) was synthesized from reaction of (Z)-3-[(1,5-dimethyl-3-oxo-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)amino]but-2-enehydrazide, with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of iodine as catalyst .The structure of HOPA was characterized by using IR,1H-NMR and mass spectroscopy. Nanoparticles of the prepared compound HOPA have been fabricated in aqueous media using re-precipitation method. Characterizations of the organic nanoparticles (ONPs) have been performed by using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The HOPA NPs were approximately monodisperse even without using capping agent or surfactant. The size of the nanoparticles were around 150-200 nm as indicated by SEM. The maximum of absorption spectrum of the dispersed nanoparticles is red shifted by 5 nm from the molecular absorption spectra of the HOPA in the solution, which indicate head to head alignment (J aggregate) of the molecules of HOPA during the aggregation. The well dispersed organic nanoparticles in aqueous media holds potential application in future to be used as a tag for biomedical imagining.
