Arthroscopic transosseous versus suture anchor repair: Clinical outcomes in patients with bilateral rotator cuff tears.

The aim of our study was to define if Arthroscopic Transosseous Rotator Cuff Techniques should have comparable results to those of the suture-anchors technique in a single row configuration. We reported the preliminary results of a consecutive population of 22 patients who underwent a rotator cuff treatment on the left and right sides for average medium-sized thickness tears with minimal fatty infiltration with the two different techniques: transosseous rotator cuff repair technique on one side and single row with suture-anchors on the other side, in different times. Subjective evaluation with DASH questionnaires, Constant Scores and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain evaluation, have been submitted pre and postoperatively after both operations. A statistical analysis was performed to assess the superiority of one technique and to compare pre and postoperative ROM data and clinical outcomes. A transosseous rotator cuff repair was performed in 7 patients on the dominant arm, while the other 15 patients had dominant arm cuff tear lesions repaired by using suture-anchors technique. At last follow-up a significant improvement, in shoulder pain and function, was referred at both sides. Also, DASH, Constant Scores and NRS for pain evaluation improved with both techniques, but no statistical difference was found between them. Trends of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolates from urine cultures of women in Jordan: A 10-year retrospective study

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common medical condition among women. E.coli is the most common causative organism. Appropriate understanding of the development of antimicrobial resistance over the past helps to establish efficient treatment strategies in the future. The study aims to discover antimicrobial resistance trends exhibited by E.coli strains isolated from women urine cultures over the past 10 years. Methods: A total of 1874 affected urine samples over the years 2009 to 2018 were collectively reviewed and classified according to the response they showed to 24 different antimicrobial disks in the laboratory. Relations between time and resistance evolutionary profiles were calculated. Results: Gentamicin (p value =0.039), Augmentin (p value =0.017), Cefoxitin (p value =0.001), Cefixime (p value =0.026) fulfilled satisfactory figures in terms of average resistance, regression of resistance, speed of resistance evolution, steadiness of performance, side effects, spectrum range and cost with high significance. Conclusion: Drugs that showed satisfactory figures are recommended for future treatment protocols in Jordan. &nbsp

Peritoneal Pseudocyst - A Complication of Lumbo Peritoneal Shunt Surgery

Placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt is an established procedure for treatment of hydrocephalus, however, complications can occur. The most common causes of shunt malfunction are catheter obstruction and infection. The incidence of Ventriculoperitoneal shunt related abdominal complications has been reported to be from 5% to 47% [1]. The most common distal ventriculoperitoneal shunt complications include shunt infection, subcutaneous collection of CSF, peritoneal pseudocyst, bowel perforation, intestinal volvulus, mesenteric pseudotumor, migration of the catheter into the pleural cavity and heart, and development of an incision hernia [2].</p

Shoulder symptoms and biceps variants in overhead athletes

Throwing athletes often present a painful shoulder due to several possible causes, including superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears, biceps pathology, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, “internal impingement” with an excessive external rotation and a Gleno-humeral Internal Rotation Deficit (GIRD) and a postero-inferior capsular contracture. A narrative review about shoulder pathology in overhead athletes and long head of the biceps (LHB) variants was performed and a case report of a tennis player with a biceps variant is presented. The tennis player recovered the full range of motion of the shoulder after releasing the limb of the LHB. This case highlights that a cause of pain and dysfunction in the tennis player can be associated to the anatomical variant of the LHB origin. The SPL-DO variant seemed to restrict the shoulder internal rotation in this throwing active patient. LHB anatomical variants should therefore be considered and treated in some overhead athletes, when identified and related to a significant clinical condition. This case represents the first demonstration of the efficacy of releasing the limb of the LHB connected to the cuff, to regain the passive internal rotation

Bumper Stickers in Jordan: A Structural Analysis

This study has set out to determine the structural patterns of bumper stickers in Jordan. This study is significant since it is the first one to approach bumper stickers structurally. The study has investigated 227 stickers, which can be considered the corpus of stickers in Jordan. The study has found that around 90% of the stickers are sentences, most of which are simple sentences expressed in the present tense. This combination of the three elements i.e. sentence, declarative and simple is what facilitated the job of drivers to write their opinions, attitudes, beliefs, etc. and is what made it possible for the others i.e. drivers and pedestrians to understand the stickers. The study has also found that imperative and negative imperatives are quite common since the stickers are not addressed to the writer/driver rather to the others so as to inform them about his state, his miserable condition, his opinions, his loyalties, and his vehicle. The stickers are addressed to others to demand certain behaviors from them such as driving wisely, not challenging the sticker writer, respecting him if he is driving a truck or a lorry, etc
