    Difference in the color stability of direct and indirect resin composites

    Indirect resin composites are generally regarded to have better color stability than direct resin composites since they possess higher conversion degree. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed at comparing the changes in color (ΔE) and color coordinates (ΔL, Δa and Δb) of one direct (Estelite Sigma: 16 shades) and 2 indirect resin composites (BelleGlass NG: 16 shades; Sinfony: 26 shades) after thermocycling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Resins were packed into a mold and light cured; post-curing was performed on indirect resins. Changes in color and color coordinates of 1-mm-thick specimens were determined after 5,000 cycles of thermocycling on a spectrophotometer.     Influence of HEMA content on the mechanical and bonding properties of experimental HEMA-added glass ionomer cements

    The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of incrementally added uncured HEMA in experimental HEMA-added glass ionomer cement (HAGICs) on the mechanical and shear bond strength (SBS) of these materials. Increasing contents of uncured HEMA (10-50 wt.%) were added to a commercial glass ionomer cement liquid (Fuji II, GC, Japan), and the compressive and diametral tensile strengths of the resulting HAGICs were measured. The SBS to non-precious alloy, precious alloy, enamel and dentin was also determined after these surfaces were subjected to either airborne-particle abrasion (Aa) or SiC abrasive paper grinding (Sp). Both strength properties of the HAGICs first increased and then decreased as the HEMA content increased, with a maximum value obtained when the HEMA content was 20% for the compressive strength and 40% for the tensile strength.     Abstract Glass ionomer cement (GIC) has been successfully used in dental field for more than 40 years. Despite numerous advantages of GIC, low bond strength and slow setting rate limited conventional GICs for use only at low stress-bearing areas. To improve bond strength to tooth, two kinds of cyanoacrylates such as ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (EC) and allyl 2-cyanoacrylate (AC) were added in a commercial GIC. Changes in setting time of cyanoacrylate-modified GICs (CMGICs) according to the concentration of cyanoacrylates and/or p-toluene sulfonic acid (TSA) was investigated using a rheometer. Shear bond strength to human dentin was measured. Biocompatibility was determined by the viability of fibroblasts. Optimal concentrations for EC and TSA were 5-10% of the GIC powder and 30% of the GIC liquid, respectively. EC-based CMGIC showed twofold increase of initial bond strength compared with conventional GIC. Also, AC-based CMGIC showed three times higher bond strength and similar biocompatibility compared with the GIC. Therefore, CMGIC materials can be widely applied in dental adhesive restoration field because they showed improved bond strength and proper setting time

    Possible link between Arctic Sea ice and January PM10 concentrations in South Korea

    In this study, we investigated the possible teleconnection between PM10 concentrations in South Korea and Arctic Sea ice concentrations at inter-annual time scales using observed PM10 data from South Korea, NCEP R2 data, and NOAA Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) data from 2001 to 2018. From the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, we found that the first mode (TC1) was a large-scale mode for PM10 in South Korea and explained about 27.4% of the total variability. Interestingly, the TC1 is more dominantly influenced by the horizontal ventilation effect than the vertical atmospheric stability effect. The pollution potential index (PPI), which is defined by the weighted average of the two ventilation effects, is highly correlated with the TC1 of PM10 at a correlation coefficient of 0.75, indicating that the PPI is a good measure for PM10 in South Korea at inter-annual time scales. Regression maps show that the decrease of SIC over the Barents Sea is significantly correlated with weakening of high pressure over the Ural mountain range region, the anomalous high pressure at 500 hPa over the Korean peninsula, and the weakening of the Siberian High and Aleutian low. Moreover, these patterns are similar to the correlation pattern with the PPI, suggesting that the variability of SIC over the Barents Sea may play an important role in modulating the variability of PM10 in South Korea through teleconnection from the Barents Sea to the Korean peninsula via Eurasia

    Airborne Measurements of High Pollutant Concentration Events in the Free Troposphere over the West Coast of South Korea between 1997 and 2011

    Aircrafts enable the direct measurement of chemical components in the free troposphere (FT). This study employed airborne measurements to examine the occurrences of high concentrations of SO2 and NOx in the FT over the coastal region west of the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea. The data from a long-term (1997-2011) airborne measurement campaign were used to determine the meteorological conditions favorable for carrying these pollutants into the Seoul area. The back trajectory analyses of 21 instances of high FT pollutant concentration events showed ascending patterns from the major pollutant sources, mainly the industrial complexes in eastern China, in 9 instances and passing patterns in 12 instances. In the ascending instances, developing low-pressure systems over the source regions provide favorable conditions to uplift air pollutants from the surface into the FT. In the passing instances, an anomalous low-pressure system near the surface prevented airflows from descending into the boundary layer and upper-level anticyclonic systems helped to keep the ascending airflows in the FT.     We demonstrated tandem ring-opening/ring-closing metathesis (RO/RCM) polymerization of monomers containing two cyclopentene moieties and postmodification via insertion polymerization. In this system, well-defined polymers were efficiently formed by tandem cascade RO/RCM reaction pathway. Furthermore, these polymers could be transformed to new A,B-alternating copolymers via a sequential cross metathesis reaction with a diacrylate. Additionally, we demonstrated the concept of multiple olefin metathesis polymerization in which the dicyclopentene and diacrylate monomers underwent all three olefin metathesis transformations (ring-opening, ring-closing, and cross metathesis) in one shot to produce A,B-alternating copolymer
