Scattering Calculations with Wavelets
We show that the use of wavelet bases for solving the momentum-space
scattering integral equation leads to sparse matrices which can simplify the
solution. Wavelet bases are applied to calculate the K-matrix for
nucleon-nucleon scattering with the s-wave Malfliet-Tjon V potential. We
introduce a new method, which uses special properties of the wavelets, for
evaluating the singular part of the integral. Analysis of this test problem
indicates that a significant reduction in computational size can be achieved
for realistic few-body scattering problems.Comment: 26 pages, Latex, 6 eps figure
Application of wavelets to singular integral scattering equations
The use of orthonormal wavelet basis functions for solving singular integral
scattering equations is investigated. It is shown that these basis functions
lead to sparse matrix equations which can be solved by iterative techniques.
The scaling properties of wavelets are used to derive an efficient method for
evaluating the singular integrals. The accuracy and efficiency of the wavelet
transforms is demonstrated by solving the two-body T-matrix equation without
partial wave projection. The resulting matrix equation which is characteristic
of multiparticle integral scattering equations is found to provide an efficient
method for obtaining accurate approximate solutions to the integral equation.
These results indicate that wavelet transforms may provide a useful tool for

Signatures of Dark Matter Scattering Inelastically Off Nuclei
Direct dark matter detection focuses on elastic scattering of dark matter
particles off nuclei. In this study, we explore inelastic scattering where the
nucleus is excited to a low-lying state of 10-100 keV, with subsequent prompt
de-excitation. We calculate the inelastic structure factors for the odd-mass
xenon isotopes based on state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model calculations
with chiral effective field theory WIMP-nucleon currents. For these cases, we
find that the inelastic channel is comparable to or can dominate the elastic
channel for momentum transfers around 150 MeV. We calculate the inelastic
recoil spectra in the standard halo model, compare these to the elastic case,
and discuss the expected signatures in a xenon detector, along with
implications for existing and future experiments. The combined information from
elastic and inelastic scattering will allow to determine the dominant
interaction channel within one experiment. In addition, the two channels probe
different regions of the dark matter velocity distribution and can provide
insight into the dark halo structure. The allowed recoil energy domain and the
recoil energy at which the integrated inelastic rates start to dominate the
elastic channel depend on the mass of the dark matter particle, thus providing

Influence of the temperature on the depinning transition of driven interfaces
We study the dynamics of a driven interface in a two-dimensional random-field
Ising model close to the depinning transition at small but finite temperatures
T using Glauber dynamics. A square lattice is considered with an interface
initially in (11)-direction. The drift velocity v is analyzed for the first
time using finite size scaling at T = 0 and additionally finite temperature
scaling close to the depinning transition. In both cases a perfect data
collapse is obtained from which we deduce beta = 1/3 for the exponent which
determines the dependence of v on the driving field, nu = 1 for the exponent of
the correlation length and delta = 5 for the exponent which determines the

Complex Systems Science: Dreams of Universality, Reality of Interdisciplinarity
Using a large database (~ 215 000 records) of relevant articles, we
empirically study the "complex systems" field and its claims to find universal
principles applying to systems in general. The study of references shared by
the papers allows us to obtain a global point of view on the structure of this
highly interdisciplinary field. We show that its overall coherence does not
arise from a universal theory but instead from computational techniques and
fruitful adaptations of the idea of self-organization to specific systems. We
also find that communication between different disciplines goes through
specific "trading zones", ie sub-communities that create an interface around
specific tools (a DNA microchip) or concepts (a network).Comment: Journal of the American Society for Information Science and

Darbepoetin alfa given every 1 or 2 weeks alleviates anaemia associated with cancer chemotherapy.
In part A of this study, patients were randomised to cohorts receiving darbepoetin alfa at doses of 0.5 to 8.0 m.c.g x kg(-1) x wk(-1) or to a control group receiving epoetin alfa at an initial dose of 150 U x kg(-1) three times weekly. In part B, the cohorts were darbepoetin alfa 3.0 to 9.0 m.c.g x kg(-1) every 2 weeks or epoetin alfa, initial dose 40 000 U x wk(-1). Safety was assessed by adverse events, changes in blood pressure, and formation of antibodies to darbepoetin alfa. Efficacy was assessed by several haematologic endpoints, including change in haemoglobin from baseline. The adverse event profile of darbepoetin alfa was similar to that of epoetin alfa. No relationship between the rapidity of haemoglobin response and any adverse event was observed. No antibodies to darbepoetin alfa were detected. Higher doses of darbepoetin alfa increased the proportion of patients with a haemoglobin response and decreased the median time to response. The overall dose of darbepoetin alfa required to produce a mean increase in haemoglobin does not increase when the dosing interval is increased from 1 to 2 weeks. Therapy with darbepoetin alfa is safe and effective in producing a dose-related increase in haemoglobin levels in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy
Neighborhood Effects on the Long-Term Well-Being of Low-Income Adults
Nearly 9 million Americans live in extreme-poverty neighborhoods, places that also tend to be racially segregated and dangerous. Yet, the effects on the well-being of residents of moving out of such communities into less distressed areas remain uncertain. Using data from Moving to Opportunity, a unique randomized housing mobility experiment, we found that moving from a high-poverty to lower-poverty neighborhood leads to long-term (10- to 15-year) improvements in adult physical and mental health and subjective well-being, despite not affecting economic self-sufficiency. A 1–standard deviation decline in neighborhood poverty (13 percentage points) increases subjective well-being by an amount equal to the gap in subjective well-being between people whose annual incomes differ by 20,000. Subjective well-being is more strongly affected by changes in neighborhood economic disadvantage than racial segregation, which is important because racial segregation has been declining since 1970, but income segregation has been increasing
Anti-melanocortin-4 receptor autoantibodies in obesity
Background: The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) is part of an important pathway regulating energy balance. Here we report the existence of autoantibodies (autoAbs) against the MC4R in sera of obese patients. Methods: The autoAbs were detected after screening of 216 patients' sera by using direct and inhibition ELISA with an N-terminal sequence of the MC4R. Binding to the native MC4R was evaluated by flow cytometry and pharmacological effects by measuring adenylyl cyclase activity. Results: Positive results in all tests were obtained in patients with overweight or obesity (prevalence: 3.6%) but not in normal weight patients. The selective binding properties of anti-MC4R autoAbs were confirmed by surface plasmon resonance and by immunoprecipitation with the native MC4R. Finally it was demonstrated that these autoAbs increased food intake in rats after passive transfer via intracerebroventricular injection. Conclusion: These observations suggest that inhibitory anti-MC4R autoAbs might contribute to the development of obesity in a small subpopulation of patients
