Current orthopedic implants are not conducive for optimal integration of the biomaterial with newly-formed tissue (osseointegration) inside a patient’s body. In this study, medical-rade Ti-6Al-4V was used as a substrate due to its biocompatibility and ability to facilitate cellular adhesion and proliferation. Live cell imaging was conducted on bone marrow stromal cells, genetically modified to express the green fluorescent protein (GFP), from the 24-96 hours growth period, with the first 24 hours of growth being held inside a lab-scale incubator. Periodic images were recorded on nanopitted anodized and polished Ti-6Al-4V substrates to study how substratestiffness influences adhesion and proliferation. Collected images were analyzed for mitosis, adhesion, and filopodia-stretchability using ImageJ, an image processing program. Images were enhanced in order to perform cell counts at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours of growth. Continuous recordings were produced to account for the number of mitosis occurrences and cellular migration on each of the substrates. Based on the conducted experiments, it appears that polished Ti-6Al-4V has a higher cell adherence than “nanopitted” anodized surface and an improved rate of proliferation which may be because the cells once adhered on the nano-pitted surface have less ability to detach in-order to undergo mitosis.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2014/1004/thumbnail.jp

Concussion in Women's Flat-Track Roller Derby

Partial funding for Open Access provided by the UMD Libraries' Open Access Publishing Fund.Concussions are common among flat-track roller derby players, a unique and under-studied sport, but little has been done to assess how common they are or what players can do to manage injury risk. The purpose of this study is to provide an epidemiological investigation of concussion incidence and experience in a large international sampling of roller derby players. Six hundred sixty-five roller derby players from 25 countries responded to a comprehensive online survey about injury and sport participation. Participants also responded to a battery of psychometric assessment tools targeting risk-factors for poor injury recovery (negative bias, social support, mental toughness) and players' thoughts and feelings in response to injury. Per 1,000 athletes, 790.98 concussions were reported. Current players reported an average of 2.2 concussions, while former players reported 3.1 concussions. However, groups were matched when these figures were corrected for differences in years of play (approximately one concussion every 2 years). Other frequent injuries included fractures in extremities and upper limbs, torn knee ligaments, and sprained ankles. We found no evidence that players' position, full-contact scrimmages, or flooring impacted number of concussions. However, neurological history and uncorrected vision were more influential predictors of an individual's number of concussions during roller derby than years of participation or age, though all four contributed significantly. These findings should assist athletes in making informed decisions about participation in roller derby, though more work is needed to understand the nature of risk.https://doi.org/10.3389/fneur.2022.80993

Synthesis, Spectral and Thermal Studies, and Crystal Structure of cis-Bis(imidazole)bis(picolinato)copper(II) Dihydrate [Cu(pic)2(im)2]·2H2O

The mixed-ligand picolinato (pic) complex of Cu(II) with imidazole (im), [Cu(pic) 2(im)2]·2H2O, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, spectral methods (UV/vis and FT-IR), simultaneous TG, DTA techniques, mass spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc with the following unit cell parameters:a=16.381(1),b=9.556(1),c=5.177(1)̊A,β=119.074(5)◦,Z=4. In the octahedral complex, the picolinato ligands are coordinated to the copper(II) ion as bidentate N,O-donors forming chelate rings. The imidazole ligands are N-coordinated at cis positions. The thermal decomposition pathway of the complex has been studied by the help of thermal analyses data (TG and DTA) and of the mass spectroscopic fragmentation pattern. The volatile products observed in the thermal decomposition process were also observed in the mass spectrometer ionisation process, except for the molecular peak, and it was concluded that the ionisation and thermal decomposition pathways of the complex resemble each other

The mixed-ligand picolinato (pic) complex of Cu(II) with 4-methylimidazole (4-MeIm),[Cu(pic) 2 (4-MeIm) 2], was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, spectroscopic methods (UV/vis and FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction. In the slightly distorted octahedral cis-bis(4-methylimidazole)bis(picolinato)copper(II) complex, the pic ligands are coordinated to the Cu(II) ion as bidentate N,O-donors forming chelate rings. The 4-MeIm ligands are N-coordinated in cis positions. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P̄1 with unit cell parameters a=9.204(5), b=9.498(5),c=13.095(5)̊A, α=90.395(5), β=101.687(5), γ=112.291(5)◦andZ=2. ydrogen bondings and C-H···πinteractions occur between picolinato and methylimidazoleligands of eighboring complex molecules. Frontal aslant tracts as correlates of lexical retrieval in MS

    No full text
Previous studies reveal that a newly described white matter pathway, the frontal aslant tract (FAT), connecting inferior and superior frontal gyri has a role in speech and language functions. We explored the role of this tract in a phonemic and semantic fluency tasks in a cohort of multiple sclerosis patients diagnosed with cognitive impairment. Thirty-five MS patients with varying degrees of cognitive impairment underwent diffusion tensor imaging and the Controlled Associated Word Test. Fractional anisotropy (FA) of FAT and arcuate fasciculus (AF) were obtained through a supervised, atlas-based tissue segmentation and parcellation method. Phonemic and semantic fluency scores were obtained from COWAT. We ran a multivariate regression model, and partial correlation analyses adjusted for age, education, and lesion load, and corrected for multiple comparisons. False discovery rate (FDR) was used for the correction of multiple comparisons. Bilateral FAT FA showed significant association with phonemic verbal fluency task (Left; r = 0.46, p = 0.0058 and right; r = 0.46, p = 0.0059) but not semantic fluency task and this relation remained significant after FDR correction (p = 0.02 bilaterally). Although left AF showed some significant association with phonemic fluency task, this relation was insignificant after FDR correction. We show that bilateral FAT are correlates of phonemic verbal fluency task but not semantic in an MS cohort with cognitive impairment. This finding suggests that FAT is more specialized in lexical retrieval function as semantic fluency test encompasses all the functions except the lexical retrieval
