    Exploitation on Porpoise: The Use of Purse Seine Nets by Commercial Tuna Fishermen in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean

    This note will focus on the killing of dolphins in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) where the majority of fishing-related dolphin deaths occur. Part II will explain past and present fishing methods and discuss how the development of fishing technology has caused a serious depletion of dolphin stock at an alarming rate. Part III will address the United States\u27 response to the situation through the promulgation of legislation designed to limit the total number of dolphins killed. Part IV will focus on initial steps taken by the international community that serve to supplement and extend laws already existing on the national level. Part V will offer possible solutions by which to reduce the dolphin mortality rate in the ETP. Finally, Part VI will conclude by discussing the need for increased international cooperation to halt the current slaughter of dolphins

    The potential of micro- and nanoplastics to exacerbate the health impacts and global burden of non-communicable diseases

    Non-communicable diseases (NCD) constitute one of the highest burdens of disease globally and are associated with inflammatory responses in target organs. There is increasing evidence of significant human exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MnPs). This review of environmental MnP exposure and health impacts indicates that MnP particles, directly and indirectly through their leachates, may exacerbate inflammation. Meanwhile, persistent inflammation associated with NCDs in gastrointestinal and respiratory systems potentially increases MnP uptake, thus influencing MnP access to distal organs. Consequently, a future increase in MnP exposure potentially augments the risk and severity of NCDs. There is a critical need for an integrated one-health approach to human health and environmental research for assessing the drivers of human MnP exposure and their bidirectional links with NCDs. Assessing these risks requires interdisciplinary efforts to identify and link drivers of environmental MnP exposure and organismal uptake to studies of impacted disease mechanisms and health outcomes.</p

    The effects of singing interventions on quality of life, mood and levels of agitation in community-dwelling people living with dementia : A quantitative systematic review

    Background and Aims: Music-based interventions have been found to benefit people living with dementia and have positive impacts on cognition and well-being. Most people with dementia live in the community and compared to people with dementia in residential care often have less access to music-based interventions. There are many forms of music interventions and singing has shown particular promise; in the realm of music interventions. It is important to determine what aspects of music interventions yield the most benefits for people with dementia. This review aimed to synthesise evidence on the impacts of singing interventions on quality of life, mood and neuropsychiatric symptoms for community-dwelling people with dementia. Methods: We systematically searched three electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE and Web of Science) for studies reporting on singing interventions with community-dwelling people with dementia. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported on a singing intervention with people with dementia that included an outcome measure of quality of life, mood or agitation. Fourteen publications were identified and included in this review, with a total of n=361 people with dementia. Results: Despite some inconsistencies across the literature, evidence suggests that singing interventions led to an improvement in mood and a reduction in agitation levels in people with dementia. There was no strong evidence to suggest that singing interventions led to significant improvements in quality of life. Conclusions: This review highlights the potential of singing interventions as an effective psychosocial intervention for community-dwelling people with dementia. For key developments in this area, we urge that future studies include a control group where possible which will allow for more robust examinations of singing interventions and allow intervention effects to be distinguished from general deterioration in dementia symptoms over time

    Strong Lensing Analysis of A1689 from Deep Advanced Camera Images

    We analyse deep multi-colour Advanced Camera images of the largest known gravitational lens, A1689. Radial and tangential arcs delineate the critical curves in unprecedented detail and many small counter-images are found near the center of mass. We construct a flexible light deflection field to predict the appearance and positions of counter-images. The model is refined as new counter-images are identified and incorporated to improve the model, yielding a total of 106 images of 30 multiply lensed background galaxies, spanning a wide redshift range, 1.0<<z<<5.5. The resulting mass map is more circular in projection than the clumpy distribution of cluster galaxies and the light is more concentrated than the mass within r<50kpc/hr<50kpc/h. The projected mass profile flattens steadily towards the center with a shallow mean slope of dlogΣ/dlogr0.55±0.1d\log\Sigma/d\log r \simeq -0.55\pm0.1, over the observed range, r<250kpc/h<250kpc/h, matching well an NFW profile, but with a relatively high concentration, Cvir=8.21.8+2.1C_{vir}=8.2^{+2.1}_{-1.8}. A softened isothermal profile (rcore=20±2r_{core}=20\pm2\arcs) is not conclusively excluded, illustrating that lensing constrains only projected quantities. Regarding cosmology, we clearly detect the purely geometric increase of bend-angles with redshift. The dependence on the cosmological parameters is weak due to the proximity of A1689, z=0.18z=0.18, constraining the locus, ΩM+ΩΛ1.2\Omega_M+\Omega_{\Lambda} \leq 1.2. This consistency with standard cosmology provides independent support for our model, because the redshift information is not required to derive an accurate mass map.
