Extensions and degenerations of spectral triples
For a unital C*-algebra A, which is equipped with a spectral triple and an
extension T of A by the compacts, we construct a family of spectral triples
associated to T and depending on the two positive parameters (s,t).
Using Rieffel's notation of quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance between compact
quantum metric spaces it is possible to define a metric on this family of
spectral triples, and we show that the distance between a pair of spectral
triples varies continuously with respect to the parameters. It turns out that a
spectral triple associated to the unitarization of the algebra of compact
operators is obtained under the limit - in this metric - for (s,1) -> (0, 1),
while the basic spectral triple, associated to A, is obtained from this family
under a sort of a dual limiting process for (1, t) -> (1, 0).
We show that our constructions will provide families of spectral triples for
the unitarized compacts and for the Podles sphere. In the case of the compacts
we investigate to which extent our proposed spectral triple satisfies Connes' 7

Mutation profiling in South African patients with Cornelia de Lange syndrome phenotype

Data available on reasonable request from the corresponding author.BACKGROUND : Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) presents with a variable multi-systemic phenotype and pathogenic variants have been identified in five main genes. This condition has been understudied in African populations with little phenotypic and molecular information available.
METHODS AND RESULTS : We present a cohort of 14 patients with clinical features suggestive of CdLS. Clinical phenotyping was carried out and cases were classified according to the international consensus criteria. According to this criteria, nine patients had classical CdLS, one had non-classical CdLS and four presented with a phenotype that suggested molecular testing for CdLS. Each patient underwent mutation profiling using a targeted next generation sequencing panel of 18 genes comprising known and suspected CdLS causal genes. Of the 14 patients tested, pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants were identified in nine: eight variants in the NIPBL gene and one in the STAG1 gene.
CONCLUSIONS : We present the first molecular data for a cohort of South African patients with CdLS. Eight of the nine variants identified were in the NIPBL gene, the most commonly involved gene in cases of CdLS. A feasible molecular diagnostic strategy for rare genetic disorders within resource-constrained environments

Variant information was submitted to ClinVar and can be viewed under Organization ID 508172.Timely and accurate diagnosis of rare genetic disorders is critical, as it enables improved patient management and prognosis. In a resource-constrained environment such as the South African State healthcare system, the challenge is to design appropriate and cost-effective assays that will enable accurate genetic diagnostic services in patients of African ancestry across a broad disease spectrum. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has transformed testing approaches for many Mendelian disorders, but this technology is still relatively new in our setting and requires cost-effective ways to implement. As a proof of concept, we describe a feasible diagnostic strategy for genetic disorders frequently seen in our genetics clinics (RASopathies, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, and CHARGE syndrome). The custom-designed targeted NGS gene panel enabled concurrent variant screening for these disorders. Samples were batched during sequencing and analyzed selectively based on the clinical phenotype. The strategy employed in the current study was cost-effective, with sequencing and analysis done at USD849.68 per sample and achieving an overall detection rate of 54.5%. The strategy employed is cost-effective as it allows batching of samples from patients with different diseases in a single run, an approach that can be utilized with rare and less frequently ordered molecular diagnostic tests. The subsequent selective analysis pipeline allowed for timeous reporting back of patients results. Scale-free memory model for multiagent reinforcement learning. Mean field approximation and rock-paper-scissors dynamics
A continuous time model for multiagent systems governed by reinforcement
learning with scale-free memory is developed. The agents are assumed to act
independently of one another in optimizing their choice of possible actions via
trial-and-error search. To gain awareness about the action value the agents
accumulate in their memory the rewards obtained from taking a specific action
at each moment of time. The contribution of the rewards in the past to the
agent current perception of action value is described by an integral operator
with a power-law kernel. Finally a fractional differential equation governing
the system dynamics is obtained. The agents are considered to interact with one
another implicitly via the reward of one agent depending on the choice of the
other agents. The pairwise interaction model is adopted to describe this
effect. As a specific example of systems with non-transitive interactions, a
two agent and three agent systems of the rock-paper-scissors type are analyzed
in detail, including the stability analysis and numerical simulation.
Scale-free memory is demonstrated to cause complex dynamics of the systems at
hand. In particular, it is shown that there can be simultaneously two modes of
the system instability undergoing subcritical and supercritical bifurcation,
with the latter one exhibiting anomalous oscillations with the amplitude and
period growing with time. Besides, the instability onset via this supercritical
mode may be regarded as "altruism self-organization". For the three agent
system the instability dynamics is found to be rather irregular and can be
composed of alternate fragments of oscillations different in their properties.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figur
Injury Rates in Age-Only Versus Age-and-Weight Playing Standard Conditions in American Youth Football
Background: American youth football leagues are typically structured using either age-only (AO) or age-and-weight (AW) playing standard conditions. These playing standard conditions group players by age in the former condition and by a combination of age and weight in the latter condition. However, no study has systematically compared injury risk between these 2 playing standards. Purpose: To compare injury rates between youth tackle football players in the AO and AW playing standard conditions. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: Athletic trainers evaluated and recorded injuries at each practice and game during the 2012 and 2013 football seasons. Players (age, 5-14 years) were drawn from 13 recreational leagues across 6 states. The sample included 4092 athlete-seasons (AW, 2065; AO, 2027) from 210 teams (AW, 106; O, 104). Injury rate ratios (RRs) with 95% CIs were used to compare the playing standard conditions. Multivariate Poisson regression was used to estimate RRs adjusted for residual effects of age and clustering by team and league. There were 4 endpoints of interest: (1) any injury, (2) non–time loss (NTL) injuries only, (3) time loss (TL) injuries only, and (4) concussions only. Results: Over 2 seasons, the cohort accumulated 1475 injuries and 142,536 athlete-exposures (AEs). The most common injuries were contusions (34.4%), ligament sprains (16.3%), concussions (9.6%), and muscle strains (7.8%). The overall injury rate for both playing standard conditions combined was 10.3 per 1000 AEs (95% CI, 9.8-10.9). The TL injury, NTL injury, and concussion rates in both playing standard conditions combined were 3.1, 7.2, and 1.0 per 1000 AEs, respectively. In multivariate Poisson regression models controlling for age, team, and league, no differences were found between playing standard conditions in the overall injury rate (RRoverall, 1.1; 95% CI, 0.4-2.6). Rates for the other 3 endpoints were also similar (RRNTL, 1.1 [95% CI, 0.4-3.0]; RRTL, 0.9 [95% CI, 0.4-1.9]; RRconcussion, 0.6 [95% CI, 0.3-1.4]). Conclusion: For the injury endpoints examined in this study, the injury rates were similar in the AO and AW playing standards. Future research should examine other policies, rules, and behavioral factors that may affect injury risk within youth football
HI in the Outskirts of Nearby Galaxies
The HI in disk galaxies frequently extends beyond the optical image, and can
trace the dark matter there. I briefly highlight the history of high spatial
resolution HI imaging, the contribution it made to the dark matter problem, and
the current tension between several dynamical methods to break the disk-halo
degeneracy. I then turn to the flaring problem, which could in principle probe
the shape of the dark halo. Instead, however, a lot of attention is now devoted
to understanding the role of gas accretion via galactic fountains. The current
cold dark matter theory has problems on galactic scales, such as
the core-cusp problem, which can be addressed with HI observations of dwarf
galaxies. For a similar range in rotation velocities, galaxies of type Sd have
thin disks, while those of type Im are much thicker. After a few comments on
modified Newtonian dynamics and on irregular galaxies, I close with statistics

Gravitational radiation from gamma-ray bursts as observational opportunities for LIGO and VIRGO
Gamma-ray bursts are believed to originate in core-collapse of massive stars.
This produces an active nucleus containing a rapidly rotating Kerr black hole
surrounded by a uniformly magnetized torus represented by two counter-oriented
current rings. We quantify black hole spin-interactions with the torus and
charged particles along open magnetic flux-tubes subtended by the event
horizon. A major output of Egw=4e53 erg is radiated in gravitational waves of
frequency fgw=500 Hz by a quadrupole mass-moment in the torus. Consistent with
GRB-SNe, we find (i) Ts=90s (tens of s, Kouveliotou et al. 1993), (ii)
aspherical SNe of kinetic energy Esn=2e51 erg (2e51 erg in SN1998bw, Hoeflich
et al. 1999) and (iii) GRB-energies Egamma=2e50 erg (3e50erg in Frail et al.
2001). GRB-SNe occur perhaps about once a year within D=100Mpc. Correlating
LIGO/Virgo detectors enables searches for nearby events and their spectral
closure density 6e-9 around 250Hz in the stochastic background radiation in
gravitational waves. At current sensitivity, LIGO-Hanford may place an upper
bound around 150MSolar in GRB030329. Detection of Egw thus provides a method
for identifying Kerr black holes by calorimetry.Comment: to appear in PRD, 49
Validating epilepsy diagnoses in routinely collected data
Purpose: Anonymised, routinely-collected healthcare data is increasingly being used for epilepsy
research. We validated algorithms using general practitioner (GP) primary healthcare records to identify
people with epilepsy from anonymised healthcare data within the Secure Anonymised Information
Linkage (SAIL) databank in Wales, UK.
Method: A reference population of 150 people with definite epilepsy and 150 people without epilepsy was
ascertained from hospital records and linked to records contained within SAIL (containing GP records for
2.4 million people). We used three different algorithms, using combinations of GP epilepsy diagnosis and
anti-epileptic drug (AED) prescription codes, to identify the reference population.
Results: Combining diagnosis and AED prescription codes had a sensitivity of 84% (95% ci 77–90) and
specificity of 98% (95–100) in identifying people with epilepsy; diagnosis codes alone had a sensitivity of
86% (80–91) and a specificity of 97% (92–99); and AED prescription codes alone achieved a sensitivity of
92% (70–83) and a specificity of 73% (65–80). Using AED codes only was more accurate in children
achieving a sensitivity of 88% (75–95) and specificity of 98% (88–100).
Conclusion: GP epilepsy diagnosis and AED prescription codes can be confidently used to identify people
with epilepsy using anonymised healthcare records in Wales, U
Managing to lead in private enterprise in China: Work values, demography and the development of trust
Previous work on trust has focused on employee trust in management. However, issues of how leaders develop trust in their followers in leader-member exchange (LMX) are under-explored. Based on theories of leader-member exchange, attribution and industrial convergence, this study investigates how the work values of leaders influence the development of their trust in followers and how this is moderated by demographic factors. A survey of 219 leaders was conducted in privately owned enterprises in China. The findings suggest that the work value of centralization is negatively related to leader trust in follower predictability. Group orientation and formalization are positively related to the development of trust in follower good faith. Moreover, age and level of formal education are found to moderate significantly the relationships between leader work values and development of their trust in followers within the context of China.
