    FEDSM2006-98459 Representing Polydispersed Droplet Behavior in Nucleating Steam Flow with the Quadrature -Method -of -Moments

    Abstract This paper applies the Quadrature-Method-of-Moments (QMOM) to the polydispersed droplets spectrums typical in low pressure steam turbines. Various modes of nonequilibrium phase transition are present in steam turbines, starting with primary and secondary homogeneous nucleation as the main source of moisture followed by heterogeneous nucleation and surface entrainment sources. The range of phase transition possibilities leads to a wide range of droplet sizes, which are present under various combinations of inertial and thermal nonequilibrium. Given the extensive prevalence of CFD in turbomachinery design, it is of interest to develop an efficient modeling approach for polydispersed droplet flows that avoids solving an excessive number of equations to represent the droplet size distribution. Methods based on QMOM have shown promise in this regard in other applications areas of two-phase flow, and this paper attempts to quantify its potential for steam turbine applications by applying the method to supersonic nozzle studies with homogeneous and heterogeneous phase transitions

    Optimization of UV-Electroproxone procedure for treatment of landfill leachate: the study of energy consumption

    With increased population, treatment of solid waste landfill and its leachate is of major concern. Municipal landfill leachate shows variable, heterogeneous and incontrollable characteristics and contains wide range highly concentrated organic and inorganic compounds, in which hampers the application of a solo method in its treatment. Among different approaches, biological treatment can be used, however it is not effective enough to elimination all refractory organics, containing fulvic-like and humic-like substance. In this experimental study, the UV Electroperoxone process as a hybrid procedure has been employed to treat landfill leachate. The effect of various parameters such as pH, electrical current density, ozone concentration, and reaction time were optimized using central composite design (CCD). In the model fitting, the quadratic model with a P-Value less than 0.5 was suggested (< 0.0001). The R2, R2 adj, and R2 pre were determined equal to 0.98,0.96, and 0.91 respectively. Based on the software prediction, the process can remove 83 of initial COD, in the optimum condition of pH = 5.6, ozone concentration of 29.1 mg/l. min, the current density of 74.7 mA/cm2, and process time of 98.6 min. In the optimum condition, 55/33 mM H2O2 was generated through electrochemical mechanism. A combination of ozonation, photolysis and electrolysis mechanism in this hybrid process increases COD efficiency removal up 29 percent which is higher than the sum of separated mechanisms. Kinetic study also demonstrated that the UV-EPP process follows pseudo-first order kinetics (R2 = 0.99). Based on our results, the UV-EPP process can be informed as an operative technique for treatment of old landfills leachates.     Airborne particulate matter in Tehran�s ambient air

    In recent decades, particulate matter (PM) concentrations in Tehran have exceeded the World Health Organization�s (WHO) guideline on most days. In this study, a search protocol was defined by identifying the keywords, to carry out a systematic review of the concentrations and composition of PM in Tehran�s ambient air. For this purpose, searches were done in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science in 2019. Among the founded articles (197 in Scopus, 61 in PubMed, and 153 in Web of Science). The results show that in Tehran, the annual average PM10 exceeded the WHO guidelines and for more than 50.0 of the days, the PM2.5 concentration was more than WHO 24-h guidance value. The PM concentration in Tehran has two seasonal peaks due to poorer dispersion and suspension from dry land, respectively. Tehran has two daily PM peaks due to traffic and changes in boundary-layer heights; one just after midnight and the other during morning rush hour. Indoor concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 in Tehran were 10.6 and 21.8 times higher than the corresponding values in ambient air. Tehran represents a unique case of problems of controlling PM because of its geographical setting, emission sources, and land use. This review provided a comprehensive assessment for decision makers to assist them in making appropriate policy decisions to improve the air quality. Considering factors such as diversity of resources, temporal and spatial variations, and urban location is essential in developing control plans.     Aberrant innate immune sensing leads to the rapid progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    Novel approaches are needed to define subgroups of patients with Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) at risk for acute exacerbations and/or accelerated progression of this generally fatal disease. Progression of disease is an integral component of IPF with a median survival of 3 to 5 years. Conversely, a high degree of variability in disease progression has been reported among series. The characteristics of patients at risk of earlier death predominantly rely on baseline HRCT appearance, but this concept that has been challenged. Disparate physiological approaches have also been taken to identify patients at risk of mortality, with varying results. We hypothesized that the rapid decline in lung function in IPF may be a consequence of an abnormal host response to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), leading to aberrant activation in fibroblasts and fibrosis. Analysis of upper and lower lobe surgical lung biopsies (SLBs) indicated that TLR9, a hypomethylated CpG DNA receptor, is prominently expressed at the transcript and protein level, most notably in biopsies from rapidly progressive IPF patients. Surprisingly, fibroblasts appeared to be a major cellular source of TLR9 expression in IPF biopsies from this group of progressors. Further, CpG DNA promoted profibrotic cytokine and chemokine synthesis in isolated human IPF fibroblasts, most markedly again in cells from patients with the rapidly progressive IPF phenotype, in a TLR9-dependent manner. Finally, CpG DNA exacerbated fibrosis in an in vivo model initiated by the adoptive transfer of primary fibroblasts derived from patients who exhibited rapidly progressing fibrosis. Together, these data suggested that TLR9 activation via hypomethylated DNA might be an important mechanism in promoting fibrosis particularly in patients prone to rapidly progressing IPF

    Quark mass dependence of the nucleon axial-vector coupling constant

    We study the quark mass expansion of the axial-vector coupling constant g_A of the nucleon. The aim is to explore the feasibility of chiral effective field theory methods for extrapolation of lattice QCD results - so far determined at relatively large quark masses corresponding to pion masses larger than 0.6 GeV - down to the physical value of the pion mass. We compare two versions of non-relativistic chiral effective field theory: One scheme restricted to pion and nucleon degrees of freedom only, and an alternative approach which incorporates explicit Delta(1230) resonance degrees of freedom. It turns out that, in order to approach the physical value of g_A in a leading-one-loop calculation, the inclusion of the explicit Delta(1230) degrees of freedom is crucial. With information on important higher order couplings constrained from analyses of inelastic pion production processes, a chiral extrapolation function for g_A is obtained, which works well from the chiral limit across the physical point into the region of present lattice data. The resulting enhancement of our extrapolation function near the physical pion mass is found to arise from an interplay between long- and short- distance physics.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX, 7 figure

    Optimal Decision Making Framework of an Electric Vehicle Aggregator in Future and Pool markets

    Electric vehicle (EV) aggregator, as an agent between the electricity market and EV owners, participates in the future and pool market to supply EVs’ requirement. Because of the uncertain nature of pool prices and EVs’ behaviour, this paper proposed a two-stage scenario-based model to obtain optimal decision making of an EV aggregator. To deal with mentioned uncertainties, the aggregator’s risk aversion is applied using conditional value at risk (CVaR) method in the proposed model. The proposed two-stage risk-constrained decision-making problem is applied to maximize EV aggregator’s expected profit in an uncertain environment. The aggregator can participate in the future and pool market to buy the required energy of EVs and offer optimal charge/discharge prices to the EV owners. In this model, in order to assess the effects of EVs owners’ reaction to the aggregator’s offered prices on the purchases from electricity markets, a sensitivity analysis over risk factor is performed. The numerical results demonstrate that with the application of the proposed model, the aggregator can supply EVs with lower purchases from markets

    Comparison of Engineering Wake Models with CFD Simulations

    The engineering wake models by Jensen [1] and Frandsen et al. [2] are assessed for different scenarios simulated using Large Eddy Simulation and the Actuator Line method implemented in the Navier-Stokes equations. The scenarios include the far wake behind a single wind turbine, a long row of turbines in an atmospheric boundary layer, idealised cases of an infinitely long row of wind turbines and infinite wind farms with three different spacings. Both models include a wake expansion factor, which is calibrated to fit the simulated wake velocities. The analysis highlights physical deficiencies in the ability of the models to universally predict the wake velocities, as the expansion factor can be fitted for a given case, but with not apparent transition between the cases. 1

    Other Side of Breast Cancer: Factors Associated with Caregiver Burden

    Purpose This study aimed to determine factors associated with caregiver burden among primary caregivers of women with breast cancer in Iran. Methods This was a descriptive correlation study conducted in 2012 on 150 main caregivers of patients with breast cancer who came to the oncology clinic of Shahid Ghazi hospital in Tabriz, Iran. A questionnaire which included caregiving-related factors and the Zarit Burden Interview was used for data collection after its validity and reliability were determined. Data was analyzed using SPSS 13.0 software with descriptive and analytic statistics. The association between significant variables and the dependent variable with an observation of the effects of other variables was assessed using the multiple linear regression model. Results The mean age of caregivers was 39.60 ± 13.80 years old, and 77 (51.3) of them were men. The mean score of the Zarit Burden Interview was 30.55 ± 19.18. In the regression model, the mean score of activities of daily living, level of education, gender, and financial status were identified as the determining factors of the burden of caregivers. Conclusions Primary caregivers need to be financially supported by the relevant organizations. Care skills training and providing palliative care seem helpful in reducing the pain and the burden of family caregivers for patients with breast cancer. © 201

    Semiexclusive pionic double charge exchange on 4 He

    The semiexclusive reaction {}^{4}\mathrm{He}({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}pp)pp has been studied at pion kinetic energies of 105 MeV and 115 MeV. Signatures from the production of the hypothetical \ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{NN} resonance {d}^{\ensuremath{'}} have been searched for in the invariant mass {M}_{\ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{pp}} spectra. No hint for a dominant {d}^{\ensuremath{'}} production, as anticipated from double charge exchange excitation functions on nuclei, has been found.
