A Case for Explicit Grammar Instruction in English as Second/Foreign Language Classrooms

Not surprisingly, one’s first language (L1) is not learned from having studied its grammatical rules. On the contrary, it is acquired as a result of exposure to a substantial amount of unmodified linguistic input from the surrounding environment. However, as cognition develops over time, the ability to process input in this manner invariably declines; thus, in order to acquire an additional language following cognitive maturation, one may need to rely upon different cognitive processes altogether (Ellis, 2008)

XSIL: Extensible Scientific Interchange Language

We motivate and define the XSIL language as a flexible, hierarchical, extensible transport language for scientific data objects. The entire object may be represented in the file, or there may be metadata in the XSIL file, with a powerful, fault-tolerant linking mechanism to external data. The language is based on XML, and is designed not only for parsing and processing by machines, but also for presentation to humans through web browsers and web-database technology. There is a natural mapping between the elements of the XSIL language and the object model into which they are translated by the parser. As well as common objects (Parameter, Array, Time, Table), we have extended XSIL to include the IGWDFrame, used by gravitational-wave observatories

Growing the First Stage of the Ares Launch Vehicles

In accordance with the U.S. Vision for Space Exploration, NASA has been tasked to send human beings to the moon, Mars, and beyond. The Firs t Stage of NASA's new Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle, which will loft the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle into low-Earth orbit early next decade, will consist of a Space Shuttle-derived five-segment Reusable Solid Rocket Booster (RSRB); a pair of similar RSRBs also will be used on the Ares V cargo launch vehicle. This paper will discuss the basis for choosing the First Stage propulsion system; describe the activities the Exploration Launch Projects (ELP) Office is conducting to develop the First Stage; and offer a preview of future development activities including the Ares I-X test flight planned for 2009

Prevalence and incidence of mental health issues amongst adults with diabetes at risk of foot complications in the European Union: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate and synthesize the evidence to establish the prevalence and incidence of mental health issues in people at risk of diabetic foot ulceration living within the European Union. INTRODUCTION: Due to the large health and financial burden of diabetic foot ulceration, prevention is a key focus for clinicians and researchers. Current foot ulcer prevention strategies are directed at the assessment and management of physical pathologies and risk factors for diabetic foot ulceration. Psychological burden and risk factors are often overlooked. This review will determine the prevalence and incidence of mental health issues among adults with diabetes mellitus who are at risk of foot ulceration. The review will focus on European Union countries. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies considered for inclusion will report on adults with a formal diagnosis of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, who are at risk of foot ulceration and mental health issues. Studies will have been completed in the European Union. METHODS: A search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, AMED, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and PsycINFO will be conducted for studies published in or translatable into English. Unpublished and gray literature will be searched. Studies will be selected against the review inclusion/exclusion criteria, and selected studies will be critically appraised, with data extraction and synthesis completed using the relevant JBI systematic review tools. A review of stress-management interventions for the oncology nursing workforce: what do we know and what should we be doing differently?

Oncology nurses are at risk of chronic stress. In this narrative review we provide an overview of stress-management intervention studies for oncology nurses, and suggest that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) provides a better intervention framework due to the relevance of underpinning therapeutic processes (e.g. acceptance, mindfulness, values clarification) to the role and stress-related experiences of this workforce population. Current evidence for stress management intervention effectiveness varies, with few studies describing how theory informs intervention content, or justifying why they should benefit this population specifically. ACT lends itself to data-driven intervention development, thus potentially addressing some methodological limitations in this field. Only one trial has tested ACT in this population, reporting only partial effects. Further empirical research is required given (a) the applicability of ACT for this population and context, and (b) the associated advantages of brief and/or group delivery to address known barriers to participating in stress-management interventions
